I have a Chicago Electric disc sharpener and I've used it for years. It doesn't get the chain as sharp as manual filing but it does reasonably well and will get you back on the tree a lot faster. Of course, when you have the time, you should sharpen properly with a file and check the rakes as well.

Hi Steve, I've worked at a small engine repair shop and the Oregon Sharpener works very well. Especially for sharpening chains for sawmills that can be 6ft in length or even if you have a ton of chains to sharpen. I can't speak for the no name brand you have in the video. The Stihl 2 in 1 is great as well!

Ebay has about 100 sellers of this and similar chain saw sharpeners. I bought one that looks similar, but not the same as yours. Mine works perfectly! The proof is in the pudding though, and my chainsaws cut fast and true after sharpening. Mine also does not have a weak motor.

Steve is 100% on target here. I bought one that looks like the same design about 10 years ago. It had a decent motor but was so poorly built that it had no precision, was just horrible to use and wasted good chains. I went right back to just sharpening my chains by hand and really worked to refine that skill. A file and perhaps a angle guide and your good to go and can do it out in the forest or anytime you want/need a quick sharpen. Now that machine is collecting dust unless I need a pencil sharpened. ✏

The red arrow on the box indicates 220-230V / 50 Hz . If you have it plugged into 120V /60 Hz , maybe this why it is not enough to make it work.

@nheng6913Ай бұрын
I know your box is marked wrong and the saw says 120V, as does the plug imply. But I wonder what motor got installed. I just got a low end Oregon a few weeks ago. It is NOT the same, motor housing different, power switch the same. It is labeled 85W but in no way behaves like yours. The first chain I did had the right hand cutters blunted from visiting a stone while bucking. The grinder cleaned it up nicely. These grinders need the user to PECK at it. This is done in CNC machining when you drill tiny holes. You don't do it in one shot but you peck at it. With the grinder, the other reason to PECK is heat. It helps to prevent removing the temper from the edge by overheating. To peck, you draw sparks for maybe 1/4 second at most, then back off, repeating til done.

Haven’t tuned in a while saw the topic captured my interest faster than you can say Steve’s Small Engines anyways I’ve had my Stihl sharpener I suspect probably 30 + years old my best friend with stihl discs 3 sizes you know the reason why and dressing stones & gauge main reason I got my Stihl back in the day urban forestry always hitting foreign material nails fencing iron etc etc interior of trees such chain damage I depended on it to restore & peak sharpness of my valuable chains & I could do up 10 or 12 chains for ready cut for the week actually have a high quality Italian sharpener I keep at 90 % for the rakers since chains are off bar just a quick switch over from machine to machine rather than setting a machine up for a different function rear setting for vertical grinding ( straight down ) actually 3 settings on my Stihl platform swivel for chain grinding angles etc etc various different chains anyways a Oldie Goldie but yes do a lot of hand filing for climbing saw & such away from Iron & such in the trees but hey hit stuff high up also amazing what people put in trees and tree grows around it and hidden inside a lot of time depending on roughness of tree bark you can find a indicator that there’s a hidden secret inside were you wanted to cut so just to avoid relocate cutting spot ! Anyways just wanted to say love my ancient Stihl grinder not commercially used but well well used never dropped in funds 💰into it in all these years just replacement wheels & oh ya I have always found like other manufacturers Oregon etc etc bore hole incorrect size to fit on Stihl arbor so I’ve actually only ever bought Stihl wheels ( discs ) for it other brands bore size to large ! Thanks for today’s video Steve always a must watch on your program ! Mark 🇨🇦 🍻

Watching the point where the grinder bogs down, it looks like your chain is at or below the minimum sharpening limit. Your wheel looks like it's hitting the "tooth stopper" because the tooth is almost gone. That's why it's bogging. It also looks like the wheel hits the tie strap. So, you're hitting 3 points with the wheel.

Oh man what a piece of junk 😅 i have a HF one and ive never stalled it. I will say the one gripe i have is it just eats up the teeth. Which i mean if you dont mind buying new chains all the time its no big deal, if you are frugal it might not be the best option lol. Honestly though it gets the chains real sharp, really quick, very uniform, and pretty easy to use if you dont mind taking a chain on and off the saw. Ive opted to use the electric, hand file the majority of the time and reuse the electric every so often just to reset the uniformity every once in awhile.
