Something that I learned from doing 12v wiring on the farm, is clear heat shrink tubing over printed labels. This protects the label and makes it super easy to read.

❤❤I also wanted to say that I love how Raff is bucking the system and doesn’t give a 💩. His lack of sailing vocabulary and even grammatical errors is proof that those things don’t matter. You can be right and sitting at home or you can throw caution to the wind and live life. I once heard a quote that has stuck with me. ‘You can speak properly and be poor or you can speak with grammatical errors and be rich. Which would you rather be?’ Raff said himself in one of the videos, his skill set is building not reading. We all have our thing. Saying the right thing all the time won’t always pay the bills. But damn!! I know many a contractor and builder who are very wealthy. And that kitchen❤❤those counters❤❤ You two are the sweetest and kindest, most hardworking people. I have always found explains basic electricity using a garden hose as an example. Think of the garden hose as a wire, the water is the electricity. Water pressure is voltage and the amount of water flowing is current.

2 -an additional ground in order to protect your engine. A through haul stainless steel bolt at lease 1/2". Connect a cable from the engine to this bole. Let me explain: The crankshaft in any engine is floating and is not a good ground to the water! If you did get struck by lightning do to the floating crankshaft the lighing will pit the the crankshaft & bearings trying to make a connection to the water. When you start the engine the pits on the crankshaft & bearings will wipe out your engine. I had the privilege of replacing multiple crankshaft & bearing for Carrier corp. Do to a similar condition.

Nice! You guys may wish to install a mini split AC unit. It is much more efficient (less power) than the marine AC. They don't have all the problems with salt water heat exchangers etc. and they put out way more cold. Take a look at what Rick Moore did. You could have the outdoor unit lay flat like a pizza box and put it under the solar panels so that the air flow keeps the panels cooler as a side benefit (if you want to go crazy, you could put two units laying flat side by side under the solar). Make sure to get the unit Rick got as it has non-corrosive radiator in it that deals with salty air. Even so, the outdoor radiator unit will need replaced every five or six years - they are pretty cheap so get an extra at time of purchase. The rest of the unit will last much longer. Very cheap way to get max AC and it can easily run off your lithium battery and solar. If you don't like looking at he interior blower unit, you can also get it with four small ceiling units that blow the cold in four different locations. It can also be combined with the larger unit that Rick has.

Since you intend to cruise the oceans of the world you certainly did the right thing to rip out all of the existing wiring. Corroded connectors are hell in many ways by causing trouble making troubleshooting difficult and always are prone to causing fire.

I saw a couple from Brazil that had numbers like a wedding ban that slipped over the wire. When I worked on Jet Fighters every component was labeled from the tip of the nose of the airplane. So 12 feet from the nose is the component location and the clock location from the center of the boat like 12 feet dash 5 o'clock is the exact location. When you are at the circuit breaker and you see 12 - 5 you know exactly where the wire is going without a diagram.

While I love the fact that you guys are just going for it and sharing. This particular video scares me a bit. The color coded DC wiring is there for a reason. Also, PLEASE take note of the AWG of each wire. A miscalculation could bring your boat down by fire. Also, cutting the wire ties and mounts but leaving your wire in place let’s you use it as a “mousing line” much easier to run wiring that way. Also don’t forget drip loops. When the deck hardware and hatches leak eventually it nice to not have all the water running to the panel or batteries. I would recommend reading Nigel Calder’s and/or Don Casey’s chapters on electrics before continuing or starting a project like this. That being said, keep up the good work and remember “We learn the most from our own mistakes. I like to think I just learn more than most people.” -M Sparks.

Those pin holes in the boat wiring are probably from "bed of nails" test lead connectors and not the regular solid probe leads. Regardless of the test leads used, like you guys said, it's a bad idea to test the in middle of a wire whenever testing at a terminal end is available.

These past few video's have been SO informative, thank you for sharing all this. But I cannot help wonder, wouldn't it have been 'easier' to check and rewire everything while the boat was still in construction mode and all the cabinets and backboards were out? I've never done a refit at all so every answer is educational ;) Keep it up guys this is so fun to watch! 🤙

That’s a good question! If we were to do another rebuild, needing a rewire, then yes we’d do it first. But at the time we were living on the boat without floors and a bed and a kitchen so our priority was having a living space. We weren’t expecting to have to rewire everything either. We hadn’t dug into the wiring at all till after we built out the boat so we also had no clue we would have to run all new wires. We can definitely say we have a different order or events after this rebuild. We learned a lot!

Each time you use a multimeter you should always put the meter in ohm mode and touch the ends of your meter leads together and verify they are good. I don't know how many times I have been called by technicians to solve problems they couldn't figure out and the first thing I do is show them how to test their meter. I have seen bad meter leads with with anywhere between 5 and 50 ohms of resistance. Carrying multiple meters and multiple sets of leads is very good idea, I always carry a brand new set of fluke leads just in case I need them. A very common mistake people make is when using diaelectric grease. I don't know how many time I have seen people using diaelectric grease directly on the conductor or terminal. Diaelectric grease is actually an insulator and it will actually increase the resistance the resistance of connections. That is the purpose of antioxidant joint compounds. When using any type of crimp connector having the correct crimper for the particular terminal or connector being used is important. I build complete custom harnesses for experimental aircraft modifications, race boats and race cars. I have one of those Harbor Freight U.S. General 6 drawer service carts and it's only used for storing my hand crimpers. Another must have tool is a good label maker capable of printing on heat shrink. Numerous companies make handheld units capable of printing heat shrink labels and the most popular brands are rhino, brady and epson. The cheapest ones start at 50 bucks. The epson LW-PX400 is a good all around one to have and I thats what I usually use in the field. I usually shrink an extra layer of clear heat shrink over the printed layer to protect the label. Most of them are capable of printing regular labels as well. There is a couple free open source programs for creating wiring schematics that work pretty good. When I wire race cars and boats I always give the customer a printed color wiring schematic and a digital copy on a thumb drive.

I was very surprised to see that you were getting rid of the 220v input shore feed, and opting for 110v only, when most countries of the world use 220/240v. 220 volts uses half the amperage of 110 volts, and is considered to be safer as a result. Many cruising blue water boats have both systems installed, which does away with the need for inverters and transformers. This is not a criticism just what I hope is a useful piece of information, as I admire all the work you have done to a very professional standard, and look forward to every new episode, as they are entertaining, amusing and instructive. My own boat which is a 1986 S2 9.2 CC Cruiser Racer, was bought in the USA and sailed from the Chesapeake to Vilamoura Portugal where I live. It was wired 110 v, and my quick fix was a 230v to 110v industrial transformer, which I still use to this day, With my very best wishes and good luck in all your endeavours.

This comment may be the fuel for the opener in our next episode 😂😉kidding…in all honesty we should have left it 220…obviously 110 is the standard in the US and everything we own has a 110 plug attached to it so we switched it to fit our current needs. However, looking back, we would have left it 220 knowing what we do today

Neck the number on fuse location. Bring up number on computer program. Boom, whole electrical schematic on everything depending on that fuse. Called PLC system. Depends on user being diligent about documentation. By the way you did right. Those wires were terrifying. All it would take was copper on copper spark, and boat on fire.

What is really difficult to explain electrical theory is that there are so many terms bacause there are so many things you can measure, force, amount, resistance, capacitance, hertz, and the list gors on. But in reality, it is pretty simple. But how much does the layman need to know to operate a lamp? Simply put, if a man (force/volts)was pushing a giant beach ball (amount/amps) through a tunnel. He comes to a bery narrow part of the tunnel (resistance) so he uses how much force he has to pass through on one second. His force times the size of the amount pushed in one second equals the amount of work done, or watts. We can put a value on all of these and if we change one value the rest change. Now when you look at it like that you can visulize what is happening. It takes more study and math to understand

.... story time .... back in the early eighties a few of us were standing around trying to get a V-8 running smoothly with a timing light and not having much luck, the spark plugs had been changed not improving the situation .... an old guy walking by asked if the spark plug cables had been changed recently. The owner of the car responded that they still looked good to which the old guy responded, have a look under the hood when in is dark .. that evening the car was started and the hood popped, the light show was incredible, to say we were a wee bit flabbergasted is an understatement. The cables were changed and the timing was set and the car ran like a dream. If I remember correctly this was an early 60s GM product 4 door that we cut the roof off, just a bunch of wild and crazy guys and was the daily for the owner. The doors were welded because on a previous roof chop it was discovered that the roof was integral to the body not sagging when the door were open .... thx for the trip down memory lane .... you know this, but will say it anyhow, the crackling sound when bending the wires was the sheathing cracking .. smart move changing .... have to say Sasha, when taking the old batteries uo the companion way ladder, you on the heavy end and lifting your hands to your chin, impressed, dynomite comes in small packages .... you guys sure went to town on the electrical .. you will be so thankful having redone those connection and getting rid of all that green ... for what yo accomplished, well worth the effort ..... have to say the boom raising project took no time at all. All your other project belittle this so much, but must have been fun to get something wrapped so fast ..... think you are going to enjoy the hardtop adventure/project .... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

7:35 actually a good idea, “if in doubt, throw it out” approach, Hopefully you have a label maker, but anyway, the last thing a boater needs at sea, sail or motor, is an electrical fire! And this is serious because the wires run behind things, a short can be in one area but the highly toxic smoke may appear in another, You also have the “ domino affect” of as each wire gets its insulation burnt off, the next short can appear, meaning there’s no alternative but to shut all power off.. technically leaving you “dead in the water” with no electrical, the reason why most people wire the engine and at least one radio on a completely different loom and battery.. i could go on but won’t.. that fact you guys seem to notice this and are taking steps other should follow is good enough! Well done..

Sasha... have Raf define the difference between Keel and Rudder in Dutch... you guys are fun to watch. Thanks for making the videos so enjoyable.

As you plan on circle navigation remember that 120/60 is mostly a north American thing and you are going to run in to 240/50 pretty soon and my recommendation is to install something like a victron Blue Smart IP22 Charger to be able to use shore power outside north America.

I was so happy to see another episode. I love what you guys are doing. Your electrical stuff is amazing to me. It’s mine boggling I look at that and say I could never in my life. Do what you just did when you raise the boom I love what you guys are doing to the boat it’s so exciting to watch because I don’t have to spend anything and I don’t have to help even though I think it would be fun and I have no clue what I’m talking about.

Based upon your intro, the new hard top will be strong enough for Sasha to stand on so that she can jump into the water. It looks great.

I'm lovin it. I've been contemplating raising the boom on my boat for the same reason. In fact, I'm eliminating the boom altogether and adding a roller furler for the main sail with a loose foot sail just like the way a jib is rigged.

Amazing 👏!! The WD40 moment 😂 🤦‍♀️. Sascha your swim wear is beautiful!! So making changes to the boom doesn’t effect the structure making it weaker?

It is so nice to see the quality that you have put into everything you do. So many DIY rebuilds jerryrig everything and your work is professional or better quality both electrical and structural! Way to go. We have a 2006 Jeanneau 49 so a lot of similarities.

👋 Hi! I’ve been in bed with covid and using the time to binge all your episodes after hearing about you from Expedition Evans. Love the episodes. You guys rock. I can’t help wondering is there no recourse with the listing broker/seller who sold you a submarine?!! It doesn’t seem right that they can get away with this. Also, so many more questions I have about the financial how you guys are doing this? Like how and when did you get insurance? How did you get the final loan? And with cash to use?? Sort of like a construction loan but for a boat?? Please share for those of us wanting to follow suit. I love it❤and wish you all the best. ⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️⛵️

I have worked as a apprentice electrician, and wires have a lot of friction against each other in a bundle so when pulling be careful! pulling to hard or to fast for to long, can create new fire hazards.

Boat is looking great. Super job by both of you. One thing to consider when wiring, the lower ac voltage creates more resistance which means you need larger wire to run lower current 120v . AC and DC systems , resistance drops when voltage increases which allows for smaller conductor. This is why most vessels are 48v minimum. Some are 24v but rarely do you see 12v. It's too unreliable for marine or aviation. I would run 12 awg on receptacles, minimum. 14 awg is only for DC low draw / AC controls, and 120v lighting.

On trimming the sales, wondering if you cannot just cut the top end horizontally and put a baton in it like modern boats? Also will the performance loss be noticeable?, I think maybe going upwind it will. Would be interesting to find out. Doing the same thing on my cat.
@SpearItAnimal
@SpearItAnimal Жыл бұрын
That was my first initial thought but on a monohull we have backstays unlike a cat which just has side stays. If we cut the top off and put a baton like you suggested then it will hit the back stay

Omg huge job. Every wire. Discaimer. Not a professional fire evasion electrician. But track down those big cables. And those dodgy taped together wires. Those might not have fuses at all. Copper on copper until the coating catches fire. Then, "I am really sorry about your house. I truly hope everyone escaped the fire."

Great job on the wiring!!... If you are going to raise your boom, you should invest in a new re-inforced stainless gooseneck that will wrap the mount of the mast. The stock Beneteau gooseneck mount is very weak and prone to break. We did this on our B473.
