I thought the diving was to make him actually take a bath.
@LooKingG00d4 ай бұрын
A little strange to hear him called Yoshii :)) Japanese actually pronounce last name first, so in "Yoshii Toranaga" Yoshii is actually his Last Name and Toranaga is his first and thats how they call him - Toranaga-sama (-sama being a honorific) Similar as "Toda Mariko" and "Toda Hiromatsu" (her grandfather in law)
@jenk45454 ай бұрын
Definitely! He knows Blackthorne is much younger and fitter than him. Toranaga doesn't want him to throw the race, but he'll definitely give himself an advantage.
@jenloveshorror4 ай бұрын
Fyi, please don't forget Japanese pronounce their names backward to our English. ( ie last name is first & first name is last). U fellas keep missing this & I really had hoped by now u would have picked up on that. One Piece was huge & then some AOT characters & now this show. Prob forgetting some others, but I really hope u get this comment cause a lot of folks have been telling u guys this in all these shows. Fingers crossed u read this before next ep or 2 are watched!!❤ ps he wanted him to bathe lol. Thanks fellas, ur awesome ❤💞❤️

The diving scene is great. Toranaga definitely gave himself an advantage against a much younger, fitter opponent by getting him to tire himself out before their race. (And got Anjin to take a bath at the same time!)

Blackthorne was telling the paddlers "Hayaki! Hayaki!" The Japanese captain corrected with "Hayaku! Hayaku!" Blackthorne's doesn't mean anything. It's like saying "Go fadler! Go fadler!" But it was close enough to figure out he's trying to say "Go faster! Go faster!"

I was ready to tear this show apart when I sat down to watch it, and was consistently surprised at how little there was to criticize, and what little there was was far too minor to be anything more than a nit-pick. Movies like The Last Samurai and games like Ghost of Tsushima had me jaded when it came to western-produced media portraying Japan. Hiroyuki's insistence on the involvement of Japanese consultants and historians was the key here, and I wish more western studios would take that route. Aspects of westernization always stand out like a sore thumb when inserted into depictions of Far Eastern cultures.

The Japanese didn't know how to dive, at least according to the book. Torunaga watched a few times then tried until he got the hang of it, doing so many belly flops and back flops that a less determined and prideful man would've quit in pain until another day. Then they did race to the shore. The other Japanese also took part in the lesson, including Mariko, and unlike John, they all stripped, to his intense embarrassment. Nudity was no big deal to them, including in mixed company. Nudity is still not a big deal in Japan.
@kenllixx4 ай бұрын
Historically Hatamoto is an important title. He basically becones a samurai (just like William Addams the rl version of John Blackthorne) but an special one. It translate as "man of the flag" and that makes him important between the samurai. Also Anjin means pilot. In Japan back in the day regular people didn't have names they were called the thing they do (cook, cleaner, gardener, etc) so the first name they gave him was anjin because he works a pilot. On the other hand you have courtesans named usually after flowers and samurai "clans" named with their clan name first and their actual name second (Toda Mariko, Toda Hiromatsu, Toda Hirokatsu, etc)
@kenjutsukata1o14 ай бұрын
Also worth noting that one of the reasons they called William Adams 'Anjin' was because they found his name borderline impossible to pronounce XD

Give them a break. The character's name is "Toda Mariko." They're used to a person's given name being first and their family/married name being second. With a show with such a huge cast filled with unfamiliar names, they're likely using "cheat sheets"/imdb to help remember the names, and her character's full name is listed on imdb as "Toda Mariko."

He was often called a 'tanuki' (called a raccoon dog in the west), which were known for being cunning tricksters that could give foxes a run for their money. And anybody here unfamiliar with tanuki should do an image search for them (real ones, not the funny looking statues of them that are popular), because they're friggin' adorable. Which reminds me of a fun little tidbit for any Animal Crossing fans who happen to see this: Tom Nook is a tanuki in the Japanese version (they made him a raccoon for the localization), his name even being a play on the word, and one of the many ways they were known for being cunning tricksters was as wily businessmen. A common scam pulled by tanuki in folktales was using their magic to turn leaves into seemingly valuable items to trade, only for the items to turn back into leaves once the spell wore off and the tanuki was already long gone. That's why the furniture items you buy in the game can turn into leaves to be carried around. Plus the reason Redd is Tom Nook's business rival is because foxes were considered natural rivals of tanuki since they were both tricksters that loved pulling one over on humans, often trying to outwit each other.
