If you were alive back then, it's hard to express just how big this song was when it came out. The radio was really big then, and the Top 9 at 9 on KISS FM was a huge thing in my area. The songs with the most requests would be at the top 1 spot, and so on. It was #1 so many times in a row for so long, that one time the DJ was so sick of it that he played this song at all 9 spots as a way of rebelling of sorts. It was only meant to be a b-side originally, so it was a major slip up on the labels part. This came out in 1990. He was 16 years old. This was sold on a 45 vinyl. Back then the 45 had an "A" side & a "B" side. The "A" side had the hit & the "B" side had a song u never hear by the same artist. Ice Ice Baby was on the "B" side. When a DJ got his copy he listened 2 the B side & Ice Ice Baby was the song. I still dance to this song every time it plays on my Spotify playlist. Btw, if no one said anything about the earring on one ear, back then that’s how straight dudes wore earrings. It was very cool and fun watching you react Shon, especially since you don't know the history. Vanilla Ice was laughed at for this song even though it was a huge hit. It was because he was the first white rapper. And he was good. He had to endure a lot of ridicule. He never had another big hit like this and he fell into a deep depression and nearly committed suicide. He credits the birth of his daughter for saving his life. He was ashamed of his music career then, but everyone loves him again now. He was very cool and very sweet and never deserved the bad rap he got. I'm glad he made it out. He's still making some tunes somewhere but I don't know their names.

The nineties are remembered very fondly these days. And yeah... he really never did deserve the shit he got from people. I don't think he was ever accepted as a rapper by the rap community. But, much like Eminem, he bridged a gap between rap and the mainstream. HE paved the way for guys like Eminem, and yet Eminem gets all of the credit. It's a damn shame.

So, Ice's real name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle who came up in the underground scene in Miami back in the day. This track was released late '91, but he had actually recorded it independently just him and his group four years earlier in '87. But, it took them four years to keep hitting the pavement, keep hustlin' and to get any juice goin' and get discovered. So basically, he had to sit on the sickest track ever put to wax into the nineties before it had its day. When you hear the early days of Rap mid 80's, it is definitely dated and shows it's age now, with exceptions like Colors by Ice T, NWA and the Beastie's all of which sound as slammin' today as the day they dropped. Rumors by Timex Social Club also of its time, but still dope. The fact this song was conjured in '87 when Run DMC, LL, The Fat Boys weren't anywhere at this level is crazy cause Van Winkle and the Miami scene were clearly light years ahead, they just didn't have the benefit of proximity and geography to Hollywood. 😊

I was 14 when this song came out in 1990. It was HUGE!!! Black and white folks loved it! Sadly Vanilla Ice fell in the group of one hit wonders and when the truth came out about him not being hardcore from the ghetto, that tarnished his image. He was basically one of the first entertainers showing white people can dance,lol. Now I think he does remodeling homes for reality tv. Can't blame him in his youth...... In the 90's, & well into 2000's Hip Hop culture (& street culture in the hood) dudes only wore an earring in the left ear. I'm 39 & grew up right here in Brooklyn, NY, in a real hood. Back in those days, a dude walking around w/a pair of earrings risked serious physical assault. Also, if you pierced your Right ear only, you would be labeled as openly gay. So, the short version of the story is that Vanilla Ice was the first white rapper to make a name for himself, and a lot of people had issues with that at the time. He was mocked as equally as he was famous at the time, and when hip hop moved in a more Gansta direction in the early 90s, his time in the spotlight faded. He had a very rough time adjusting to life after fame, but dude was really smart with his money, and did quite well for himself off the back of his one hit single. He got into home renovation and had a reality TV show where he'd buy houses, fix em up, and flip em for profit. He still raps as an independent artist, though it's not really his bread and butter anymore.
