I'm so old... when I started with photography, there was no such thing as automatic. You bought the film that was rated for whatever speed you wanted (ASA back then, ISO now). A handheld meter made life easy, but even without one, there was the 1-over-focal length and the sunny 16 rule. When I got a camera with match needle metering, I thought I hit the jackpot! And later when I got an aperture preferred camera, I was in heaven. Because all lenses had an aperture ring with depth of field scales, it was easy to nail focus without really trying. That said, now with digital cameras, it seems a little awkward going back to manual mode, although I do wish lenses still had the depth of field scales on them.

Hi Grant, have you got a video that covers the "marching ants thing". Cheers, Matt from Geelong.

@@grantrobertdavies it has something to do with manual focusing, I think. I guess it's like a manual focus aid.

@@mathish1477 I think you might be talking about “Focus Peaking” Yes it’s a manual focusing aid… Blue highlights (ants) that lets you know when your subject is in focus - I Don’t actually have any videos on the subject, but I’ll write it down on my white board as a future video idea :)

Peter Forsgård also says that in mirrorless camera’s the metering mode does not matter because you see the result before you take the shot. Only exception is spot metering.

Hi Grant, thank you so much for the videos on M4/3 cameras - there actually isn’t much out there on them and you’ve inspired me to have a go at shooting on my GX9 on manual mode (I’m a hobbyist) telling the story of my family. I have a question about the manual focus on the camera as it seems restricted in the frame … I’m finding it hard to get an answer to - can I ask you/ send you a picture so that you know what I mean?

For street I put ISO on auto and shutter speed is usually at 250. I manually focus everything but I'm pretty slow and often miss some moments. For portraiture I shoot everything manual. Thanks for the video!

Hi there. I love your videos and tips. I have a quick question. I’ve made myself a diy lens with a body cap and a disposable lens. The image comes out blurry and there’s lots of videos on canon for the correct settings. Could you assist please🙈

Fabulous vid, thanks Grant. As a film shooting refugee digital is a whole new leaning curve and I thanks you. One question, does Manual Mode completely wipe out Auto Focus? ✌️🌻
@grantrobertdavies Жыл бұрын
No manual mode does not wipe out Autofocus :) However - I do Manual focus when I shoot video - or Macro stuff …

Shooting manual is good in a studio setting, landscape and other slow situations. For run and gun, in my opinion it’s a waste of time, and you might loose shots. Set a highest ISO limit and lower shutter limit, and trust the camera. Metering mode does only matter in PAS, not M, and metering mode does not matter at all really in a mirrorless camera anyways. If you shoot JPG, of course, white balance is important in camera as it’s baked in to the file… In RAW though… It’s just a number you can change in Lightroom. So expose to the right, protect your highlight and let the camera work.

Harsh opening to the video. Lol. Please warn us headphone users. Appreciate the Gx9 videos, I just bought one partly based on your information. It’s nice to know it’s still a relevant system even tho it’s a few years old.
