I def agree with you. Back in the day, our type of hair was not valued in the natural hair community. You needed to have loose curls and big long and full. Then all of a sudden in the past two years I have a sense that now everyone wants to have type 4c hair and I've even seen people/youtubers using 4C as a way to grab views as clickbait which I do not find helpful for the natural hair community. I am glad that I have to say i am seeing more short type 4c hair naturals more often - we are slowly getting there. And I am one of them!

Not everyone wants 4c hair. Like the person above me said , it's just trendy. I love all type 4 hair. But I'd be lying if I said I desired 4c hair. It's beautiful but I love the type 4 hair that grows out of my head. If anything I desire more density and fullness.

Yes when I was in school there was a girl with beautiful short natural hair. (My hair was chemically straightened at the time) I got in an argument with a guy who said "why was she walking around with slave hair" when I rebuked him, he said "my sister has natural hair, I have no problems with natural hair!" I had my natural hair out once in the 6th grade for picture day when I was around 11 or 12 years old. Back then it was about 13 inches long but being a type 4 girl, it did shrink up a bit n didn't look as polished as it did at first. A boy in my class made fun of me saying my hair looked like a big bush, and proceeded to stick his pencil in my hair alleging that my hair broke his pencil due to it's wild textured nature. That broke my hair self esteem and I didn't feel a pretty anymore for that picture day. I'm 30 now and that still stays with me, even though I now know that that kid was just an immature jerk and my hair is beautiful and something to be envied.

I remember when gabbie Douglas won the olympics and the only thing black people could think about was her edges😐😑 same with that h&m ad where all the kids had messy hair on purpose and the black community went in on the dark skinned black girls hair being “unkempt”. When even the white and mixed kids had messy hair it was a part of the campaign. This is tragic.

I was literally JUST wallowing about my hair being short last night, this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've always tried to articulate that my hair being short made me feel upset because I thought people with longer hair had more advantages, but I was missing that phrase "longer hair is seen as more feminine" and that's exactly what I wanted to be seen as, more feminine. I wanted more boys to like me and I thought they didn't because I didn't "look enough like a girl", and it didn't help that people were always trying to convince me I was a lesbian in high school and other lgbtq+ people kept confessing that they liked me. Sigh, first world problems. Hopefully I can learn to not hate on my hair so much and also that the right guy will eventually come out of wherever he's hiding and like me for me, no matter what my hair looks like because my hair is not my personality. As always, thanks Starpuppy, you give the realest pep talks and I appreciate it!

True. But also, indulge in what makes you happy. That should give a confidence boost and stimulate other parts of your life too. Last year I cut off my waist length sisterlocks because I needed to feel, explore and come to terms with the hair coming out of my scalp in an "unaltered" state. I had no idea of the blowback I was in for. I pressed on and so glad. I am more in touch with my natural-super super coily, 80-90% shrinkage hair than ever before. I've rolled up my sleeves and accepted that every hair style I wear is an Afro. Yeppers. Depending on what stretching method I do - it can be a longer Afro. This includes wash day right out of the shower, wash n gos, braidouts, twist outs, whatever. I am at peace with my natural hair. Entitled to be frustrated from time to time, but still at peace. FYI - I am so hair crushing on this latest look of Fluff Nuggett.

Natural hair "movements" amongst Black women happen every 30 years or so. The natural hair movements of the 60's and the 90's centered short, kinky hair, or the hair we were born with. This most recent movement is not about natural hair - it's about natural hair that is close to whiteness and European beauty standards. This includes the obsession about length. And yes - I'm quite sure it's deliberate. Now I see sistas with straightened hair, while calling it "natural" (NOPE) and having periodic "length checks," as though long hair is some sort of virtue. There is nothing new under the sun, but this focus on mixed-looking hair as the only "right" way to be natural? That's some new sh*t. When I see Black women with African hair, and African features, talking about how much they hate their appearance, is sad on some levels, but it's still ridiculous AF. We are the originals, and we still act like we don't know that.

Gica Rey thats one Disney princess and shes probably the only (or at least there are very few) exceptions. The fact is a white woman having short hair and a black woman having short hair are very two completely different things. Hell even hairstyles, when a white girl wears a messy bun it’s a legitimate hairstyle, when a black girl leaves her edges tf alone and doesn’t have it snatched for the gods, it’s unkempt. Texturism is a thing and generally the kinkier your hair is, the significantly less leeway you’re given. So if you’re 4c the message is that shit better be snatched, long, thick and full. And the looser your hair gets the looser that standard is applied.

I agree with you about long hair and femininity completely so this isn’t to mess with your points. I’m just a Disney nerd, so I wanted to point out that Cinderella, Snow White, and Mulan (after she cut it) don’t have long hair. Notice how Mulan is much happier after she cuts her hair and let’s go of feminine standards that she can’t adhere to, no matter how hard she tries. And as for Rupanzel’s pixie cut at the end, yeah you can look at it as if she’s lost all her magic once the hair is gone. But you can just as easily look at it as she’s lost such a heavy burden as well. It was the reason for her capture and enslavement and fear for 18 years, and once she was able to let it go, she became free. Similarly, once we as black women let go of the notion of white ideals of femininity which enslave us, we are free to embrace all our hair’s beauty.

I can relate to what you're saying, being a girl with fine type 4 hair, that is also short, and hard to grow, it has been a constant battle between myself and my hair. Im still on the journey to loving my hair fully for what it is. Your videos really contribute to my journey of accepting my hair, thank you so much for sharing your emotions. It helps alot of us❤

Some do actually desire to keep their hair short which is fine. I don't think the issue is that its still so short. Its more along the lines of many 4c individuals have connected with their crown. Due to this hair begins to thrive, flourish, become healthy, thick, long and lovely. Once you also reach this point it'll make more sense. Until then you can always stretch your hair as a method to assist your growth, and increase styling options.

Yep, I totally get where you're coming from. I have very high density, tiny coils/kinks, with mostly coarse strands. I found @iamblackgirlcurls early last year and ended my product chasing/ hair dysmorphia. I have a shape cut into my hair, so whether its defined or an afro, it has some rhyme or reason. The images of "4c" hair these stylists display on their IG accounts are stunning 😄. They put everything into context while challenging you to question why you see yourself in a certain way and why you do things to you do to your hair. I'm glad you're in a happier, healthier mindset about your hair. Have a blessed weekend ☺️

I just want to say you have helped me gain confidence in my hair! My hair is exactly like yours--thin, low porosity, and very 4c, and Its so refreshing to see someone else with hair like mine because I dont see mine anywhere on the media. I used to neglect my hair growing up and experienced a ot of breakage because I wasn't taught how to care for my hair.
