So in reference to romanticizing 4c hair descriptions, this is a passage of the YA novel I'm working on: "Her hair was akin to the other side of the moon, dark and majestic in the way it defied gravity. It spiraled around itself the way nebulae coalesced inside of galaxies. And though it reminded him of night, it crowned her head like the sun's corona, eclipsing her already-tourmaline skin. Simply put, her hair climbed to heights that could barely be reached let alone touched, but it melted him all the same, the way cotton candy melts on the tongue on a warm summer day."

It's really sad that there's been a division like this in the Natural Hair Community. I've had natural hair for about 14 years now, non-stop, and in the beginning it felt like it was all hands on deck with folks like African Export with a 4C texture and Naptural85 with a looser texture and all folks in between. At some point the obsessive need to have the perfect braidout/twistout (which I could never achieve even with 3c-4a/b hair) became a turnoff for me and I wandered away with some core home made recipes and techniques to keep me afloat. But it really sometimes be your own people. The clowning I got from others in the black community for have natural hair when I started . . . . .

Have empathy, because we are conditioned to dislike ourselves. I didn't get mad when black ppl disliked my hair, I had empathy, because I know they were unknowingly ignorant, confused, and conditioned to not like who they are as a ppl. I educated them, and kept it pushing
@aerjones4 жыл бұрын
This! - old school yt (2008ish-2011ish) was a beautiful thing before the definition/wash-and-go became an obsession. So great to see 4c begin to enjoy our own texture again. And see it celebrated without a heap of gel in it

@@bre9328 Mmmm, I get it, but I come from a time period when white folks could full throat discredit you on the job because of your natural hair, and would get backup from their Black "friends". I'm talking about before Obama was president and Black folks were afraid to say they supported a Black president in public. It was "pick me" white supremacy style and it wasn't cute.
@bre93284 жыл бұрын
@@lesliewit That's the thing, ppl learn more from empathy vs apathy. All the black ppl who said ignorant ish about my hair in 2010, I just dropped some knowledge on them in small doses, and now they natural. They realize how stupid they were on their on now, I didn't have to say anything. I'm came close to going off on them back then, but I'm glad I didn't, because I saw how sick they were as black ppl towards blackness
@lesliewit4 жыл бұрын
@@bre9328 In the meantime, I experienced real harm in my life because Black folks preferred to live in their self destruction. If that's your approach, ok, good for you. But it's not everyone's job to educate people out of their ignorance. I don't stick around for folks that undermine me, and I don't encourage anyone else to either. That's why so many folks in the natural hair community got caught up in the hair type competitions, trying to make their 4c hair behave like 3a hair. At some point, banging your head up against a brick wall is going to crack your head open. Choosing myself and my own well-being is not apathy, it's valuing myself above the machinations of others.

Romanticism of 4c hair is something I hope I can do in my writing. Having 4c hair, how it frames the face. How the hair reaches out to you to focus on the face, but I want to find proper language for it. Like the hair is drawing you in to focus on the face, especially in an afro state. I also think when there are romantic scenes, there should be an understanding of how to sexualize how someone touches it. Just as how you have the bringing of the hair behind the ears for straight hair, something similar for 4c. I want to do that for my 4c hair, and this inspires me to keep on trying to find the best way for me to do that. Thank you for the video!!!!!

cmw 13 black people come from a lot of different ethnic backgrounds so saying most black people have 4c hair isn’t really correct. An example is the diversity of hair textures in Africa alone, not to mention in Eurasia and the “americas.” All people usually have different hair textures throughout their head so it is possible to have 3B to 4c on one head alone(slight exaggeration but I’m sure someone out there has that). The top of my head is a different texture than the back and a different texture than the middle, but none are 4c. Other than my grandmother being half Native American I’m about as “black” as they come for north americas standard of “blackness.”

Those sound effects took me out 😂. So true what you're saying about normalizing imagery of 4c hair though. I remember 2010 youtube looking SO different and at the time I was constantly focused on trying to make my hair look like the 4a-b women I was constantly seeing then. Thank you for your contribution to the landscape change!

I don't know how to talk about our hair in the great way we suppose to talk but... I have to express... StarPuppy, you inspiring me to get back to my routine and keep my curls on point. Seriously. I love how our culture and our ancestors always took care of hair very properly and I hope we all see that another characteristic of our identity is really upon our heads. Like... how their 4c hair curls has the design of the force of nature... WHOOF. We best here. And you BEAUTIFUL.

I think this is so incredible, because I remember your video titled 'Why you should love your kinky 4C natural hair'. I remember being absolutely blown away by all the things you said, and suddenly seeing it in my own hair, everyday, every time I took care of it. I started to really love my hair because of that video. And now to hear you speak in this way!!! I am South African, and often (especially up until a few years ago) natural hair is not seen as beautiful. Unless you've already grown it to at least medium length, where people can start to see the vision, you'd go through discouragement, hiding, and people telling you how 'hard' or 'difficult' or how much struggle it will put you through. In salons (in townships) they still ask me if I wouldn't rather just relax my hair. Danielle, thank you so much. You and the same youtubers that you mentioned really made such an impact in my life. I hope all your dreams and wishes come true!

I like "lush" and "warm." "I'm grateful for the lushness of my hair. On 'fro days I take a minute to push my fingers through my kinks and nestle them against my scalp, where it's warm." BTW, Lupita Nyong'o's word is "clay." She told Allure magazine: "I love my hair. It's like clay in the right hands. Clay can be art in the right hands."

I have straight hair and I envy you for your hair. I hate my hair because it's thin and fine. It doesn't curl unless I blast it with hairspray and even then....it doesn't curl. My pony tails are little...like...a rat tail. I love how your hair has volume and I love how your curls are so springy. I will never ever have that. I'll never be able to do a twist out and get your results. Seriously fuck straight hair, it's easy because you can just brush it.....but that's literally all you can do to it. I absolutely love 4c hair. I think it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm mesmerized every time I see a girl with 4c hair grab a strand of her hair, twist it around her finger and stretch it and let it snap back. Love it.

Coils danced around her smiling face, framing her with as much enthusiasm. Her gravity defying curls reached for the heavens, reminding me that I can too. Each kink smiled back to resemble glitter in sunlight. Standing out with feedom, not with distain. With wonder, not discomfort. As she passed by, a new hope rang within me that I too can spread that joy.

“I was unfamiliar to myself, and that made me feel like I was ugly-once you internalize enough positive images that look like you, you will start to have an understanding of a beauty standard that you can fit into and *thats* *really* *important*” Danielle you are brilliant and thank you so much for putting into words what many of us struggle and strive to iterate. I’m a light skinned black woman (with type 4 kinky hair-for relevance) that *currently* fits into v many standards of conventional beauty but I didn’t always, and for a while even when I did, I didn’t think or know so. Thank you for always challenging me to see myself and understand how the world sees me and to not accept the limits of what our world teaches us to see or how that informs our self-image! Our hair "4 C" hair is the only type of hair that defies gravity.. (we are a special set apart people and our represents how special and beautiful we are 😊💗) It is our crown, and grows upward towards The Most High Yah (God) praising him always. It flourishes in its natural state. It requires love, appreciation, attention and acceptance. When we love our hair it loves us back just like yours is doing in this video. I really can identify with you regarding more options like hair bands, wings, that resembles/represents 4 C hair, when needing to put our hair away to protect it. This was a very inspiring and informative video. LOVED IT! loved the transparency and authenticity! I will share it with my daughter. Thank you so much for great content, and all you do to educate the national hair community! You are absolutely beautiful inside and out. May the Most High continue to bless, prosper, and provide you with all you stand in need of and more. Peace and love my beautiful melonated sista....

Wow, what a video! The beauty of her coils lays enticingly one upon each other, forming a pattern of love as she peered into the mirror. She was so tempted to run her hands through her hair to rearrange but did not want to interfere with its delightful texture and natural placing. Each coil was gently being teased by the breeze as she shook her hair. Each coil deftly claiming its rightful position in the formulation of the crown upon her head. Gosh, this is my hair!

Sooo happy to see 4C Only being amped up like this. I am tired of people sleeping on 4c hair, when it is BEAUTIFUL. And YESS to low manipulation styles, It’s not “lazy” so I’m trying to stop using that term, it’s realistic and effective. The message in this video is so strong, finding some of yourself in others can be life changing which is why representation matters soooo much. I literally learned so much of what I know about hair from Green Beauty’s channel, and then I just went down a rabbit hole of finding all of these hidden gems of content creators with Type 4 and SPECIFICALLY 4c hair. It was beautiful to see but sad as well because they were all so lowkey. I’m loving these conversations that we have been having lately as a community.

I just have to say this cause I had a thought outside of the information overload. I'm in my 60's and what I remember about the representation of 4c hair on TV and mags was that it was cool. In the 60s, 70s, 80s and early 90s. 4c black hair was cool many black actresses wore natural hair. There were many products for 4c hair and no one had a problem with 4c hair that I could tell EXCEPT for black people! That "good hair" thang began to grow and grow and GROW! oh she got good hair or he got good hair. The envy and jealousy and longing to have "good hair" among 4c black people just began to become outrageous. Many began to totally reject their GOD given hair! And find alternatives that they deemed more "convenient" though torturous and damaging. This thing grew and GREW, but our hair didn't. This thing is in us and what we see outside of ourself. And oh yes, this want was quickly catered too and our pockets emptied for vanity. Our natural beauty compromised by ourself to attempt to reflect someone elses looks or hair that is not like our own. As if we will look better by trying to look like that other person who ain't trying to look like us I might add. We did this to ourself. GOD does not make mistakes. We all need to learn how to love how HE made us from the top of our head to the soles of our feet and stop letting the system make fools out of us and drain our money because of our physical misplaced vanity. We are black, we are beautiful, from natural hair to dark toned feet we are awesome! Can you dig it? I know that you can❤
