The Latino/a thing gets even worse for progressives, as in Spanish when you are referring to a group of men and women, the male form Latino OVERIDES the feminine form (ie if you aren't talking about all women, it will ALWAYS be male (Latinos, chicanos, etc)), which from their perspective is linguistic patriarchy. They HATE Spanish as much as they pretend to love diversity.

The thing is, there already exists a gender-neutral term to refer to latinos and latinas, it's "latino". Every single noun in Spanish is gendered by default, even if it's an inanimate object. A shoe is "un zapato", a house is "una casa". It's not supposed to be a literal indicator of the thing's gender, it's just a function of the language. And when it _does_ come to people, the default gendering doesn't always favor men. In fact, the word "person" itself is "persona", which is feminine. So the term Latinx isn't just unpronounceable in Spanish, it's born from a total lack of understanding of how Spanish works in the most basic sense, which makes it ironic when its proponents claim they are "educating" others. There's a saying in Spanish, "No le busques las cinco patas al gato". It means "Don't look for five paws on a cat" and it is told to arrogant fools who try to find a hidden meaning in everything. Not everything is secretly problematic, or oppressive, or rooted in some phobia. This is something radicals need to understand.

The most telling thing about people forcing "Latinx" not knowing a lick of Spanish is that not only nouns are gendered, but also articles and adjectives. If I were to say "El latinx está loco" o "La latinx está loca", the statement is gendered anyway, so it doesn't even works for what they intend it to work. It's not possible to make Spanish non-gendered, unless they intend to make some crazyness like "Xl latinx está locx".

It caught me super off guard to find out directly from Hispanic immigrants that they were pro Trump, but every single one of them explained the same: they don’t speak English well enough to do most jobs so they do basic construction/harvest. They have exactly the same set of skills as illegal immigrants. Not only did they pay for their green cards, they also pay taxes because they’re legal. That means illegal immigrants work under the table for less money and put legal immigrants out of a job while also helping businesses commit tax fraud and wage abuse.

7:14 Thank you for bringing this up! As someone who used to buy and read Miles Morales: Spiderman comics since 2014, I am glad I dropped comics all together in 2016 (i only buy and read manga now) This issue was so upsetting. What made Miles such a cool character was how his series never delved into any identity politics, initially, until Bendis lost his mind and made it woke. It's a seriously good thing that SONY prevented Bendis and any of his comic pros from having anything to do with the Spider-verse movie. That's why that movie ended up as good as it did and is devoid of divisive wokeness.

4:31 - This really can't be emphasized enough. It's such an incredibly obvious foreign injection that any native Spanish speaker can spot. And it's weird, because there are viable alternatives that other European languages already use that would feel *much* more natural. It's like they're _trying_ to make their agenda unpalatable to normal people. 7:55 - This is another great example. In Finnish, (which does not have genders at all), people are trying to make up new neo-pronouns for the blue-haired crowd. So you can use the the same pronouns for men , women, and sometimes dogs and cats, but if it has blue hair and a lot of peircings you have to ask what it (and in Finnish you can refer to any person as "it" in speech) wants to be called. So you have 2 non-gendered pronouns for persons and things, but different new ones for the woke people only.

But that may be in part because I come from the "Geek" side of "Nerd Culture", and the impact on OUR side of the culture has been more positive, generally. In the show "the view", the topic of using Latinx was brought up, with the same study Dev cited here (if I remember correctly), and as we can see, there are more people that hate the term than people that would be ok using it, but one of the hosts (a Latina) still said that she would default to the term Latinx to avoid basically hurting someone. She is focusing so much on the small tiny little fringe fraction of the population that wants to be called Latinx instead of using the gendered term, that she's ok with probably insulting 5 or 6 times more people when doing so.

"So, you're willing to insult the majority of people rather than hurt possibly 2 percent of the people out there who identify as trans or genderfluid or nonbinary? Does that really make sense to you?" And see what she said. Honestly, we've just got to start asking these plain-language questions and see if we can wake people up.

As a quick aside. Womxn or womyn is not only irritating, its based off of linguistic ignorance. Woman isnt man as in males with a wo on the front. Man was gender neutral with werman and wifman as the two genders. From wifman we get the word wife. Wifman became woman over time, werman became man. Wer only seems to have been retained as a prefix in the word werewolf, meaning man wolf or wolf man. It amazes me the degree to which people can care about the power of words and connotations yet display so little curiosity in understanding linguistics and etymology.

"Latinos" besides being a male gendered word , it is also the gender neutral term to describe everybody (todos), like we would say "los perros"(the dogs) or "los gatos"(the cats) all male gendered but also gender neutral, but if you say "las gatas y las perras" you would be refering to an exclusively female group of cats and dogs. Here in latinoamerica we actualy have our own problems regarding those words, given that there are groups of people that don't understand how their own language works. They want to change every word thats male gendered when refering to a gender mixt group changin the "O"' for an "E". For example they want you to say "todes"(not a word, but suposedly the gender neutral term) instead of "todos"("everybody" an already gender neutral term).

Some languages change spelling or the word used before it depending on gender, Mutations is a non-existent concept in English, but has varying degrees of prevalence in most other Eurasian languages (E.g. Le/ La in French, Fy/ My in Welsh, Die/ Der in German, etc). In some cases the actual gendered word changes because of the word before it and mutation rules (E.g. prevalent in Welsh "Fy Ngheg i/ Fy Ci i" (both start with 'C' but they're different genders.)).

Greek here, when I lived in CA plenty of people felt the need to let me know that identifying as white is inaccurate. Some said I am also Latino-ish, some said I am Middle Eastern, some said “Mixed” better describes me. I was baffled.

Yeah, because whether they admit it or not, CA is filled with woke people who judge based on skin color, making them among the most racist of the racist - they just don't KNOW they're racist. I'm much more interested in WHO people are than WHAT they are. I mean, I enjoy learning about cultures, and if you are doing something I don't recognize, I might ask about it, but that's because I'm a naturally curious person, not because I'm trying to stuff you into a flipping box!

Well, it kind of makes sense in the US context. A racist wouldn't ask you for your ancestry, they just see white, dirty white, brown and black. Try as you may, you are not allowed to be Greek in US, you need to fit in into the existing social structure.

It's too bad so few use "Chicano" anymore. I always assumed it was a term that sounded so "cool" when they said it back in the early 80s. Like it never came out without it sounding like this person was the most proud AF guy to ever walk the Earth.

i will never understand why people think Latino Americans are a different race. overall we have the exact same colonial past as Canada and the USA. natives who got invaded and colonise by generally white people and then got introduced to blacks via slavery. we have all the colors of the rainbow in terms of skin, both the originals and the combinations that naturally arise after centuries. and want to hear a funny thing? at least in Colombia, most people don't give a shit about it; there are no movements from x or y skinned people (at least if you are not a progress brainlet) because we are all creole. our identity is being part of that ungodly genetic mix and match that then gets burned by the sun and hard work.

To be fair; the integration of Italian and Irish immigrants into the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries are absolutely not analogous to the Mexican/Latino situation. There is no true integration for the most part for the waves that have come here after 2000; there are entire classes of kids here in SoCal that speak improper English peppered with Spanish, but speak no proper Spanish at all. They are the fruit of the industrial reserve of labor and votes allowed to freely settle for the last 20-25 years, born deracinated. There was a degree of commonality and homogeneity amongst Irish and Italians and their American cohorts that made this possible. This is not so much for the majority of arrivals since the 2000s.

Yes and no. Look at how (for instance) NYC treated Irish and Italian immigrants in the 1800s. Literally basically treated them to a form of Jim Crow (note...they also did this to basically every non WASP).

Slight correction. The "X" when used to denounce apart of one's heritage (i.e. Malcom X), was first popularized by the Nation of Islam shortly after its founding in 1930. It represents the unknown origin of many of the Black diaspora around the world. The X in Latinx is a renunciation of the Roman/Spanish /Euro origin of the Hispanic culture and language in this same vein

@@lam2142 Sorry bro, it's ours now. The reality is when people think Latin (In North America at least) they think Latin Americans. Since North American media has the most influence, chances are that most people outside North America (except for maybe Europe) will think of Latinos/Latinas as Latin rather than Italians. I live in Canada. I have NEVER seen Italians referred to as Latin. But I have seen Latinos/Latinas referred to as such.
