This is really cool! I tend to be really skeptical of shonen as a genre because of the M A L E G A Z E, so I'm generally interested in shoujo and seinen, and this looks like a cool genre bend! Thanks seji!

tbh even you can find good shonen that has slice of life or seinen characteristics. It all has to do with which demographic they target at the end of the day.
@madmouse4400
@madmouse4400 2 жыл бұрын
It's a demographic , not a genre , it has nothing to do with the actual content , the genre or the tone of a series, you can find romcom such as The Quintessential Quintuplets , sport like Hajime no ippo , psychology like Death Note , action-adventure like One Piece , Post apocalyptic like AOT , comedy like Gintama , etc.

I probably don’t even need to say it, but Dorohedoro by Hayashida Q is one of the best female created horror/sci-fi/fantasy manga of all time. Edit: don’t think it’s considered shoujo, but it’s amazing and I highly recommend it
@TheArtisanGeek

For sure! Would also recommend her latest work Dai Dark! I believe the first volume has been published in English - there are three volumes as of yet and the story is just imaginative as Dorohedoro :D
@rosietales

Dorohedoro was written by a woman?! Sometimes I wish they would give female mangakas more chances on other genres apart from the usual ones. A lot of them fear revealing their gender because of expectations.

I'm not really into horror because my imagination really takes off but I'm reading occasionally a suspense manga called Yami no Purple Eyes and it's quite interesting. I saw a video once as well about shoujo not being the same as before or not being as popular as shounen compared to previous years, I hope this changes in the following years.

Love the video. It's so nice to listen to you, you have a great presence. Thank you for all the recommendations, too; it's nice to hear about Deimos no Hanayome, and not see it being forgotten. Mitsukazu Mihara's Dokuhime is also a good gothic (fairy-tale-esque) story with horror elements. It's not obscure, but sadly not often talked about

first heard about this sub-genre in film classes that specifically focused on japanese horror studies some years ago but i've never really seen many people talking about it outside of academia. i think the genre allows certain things to be approached in a very unique way that subverts aesthetic and narrative expectations

Tomie is frustrating for me. It's obviously a look at how toxic and misogynistic men are. Like a criticsm of their tendency to resort to violence against women they can't control and also a commentary on how men and women fear view women and how they should present themselves. The problem I have is just how easily it sets the story for an incel to relate to. It frames Tomie as an antagonist but it does so in a way to dehumanize her (she is a monster but the stories go out of their way to humanize her in places to make you more easily relate to the characters sort of an opposite to Miss Fuchi) and I can easily see disgusting incels finding catharsis in the stories. Still interesting that Tomie is considered Shoujo.

Is Tomie considered Shoujo?

Yeah manga are categorised based on the target demographic of the magazines they’re published in. For Tomie those were Monthly Halloween and Nemuki which are both shoujo magazines. Cheers!

Yeah most of what Itou makes is considered shoujo (the longer pieces like Gyo, Uzumaki, Remina etc. are published in Big Comics, so those are seinen). I actually made a video about all of Itou’s works and my collection so that will be up in about a week or so :)
