I've never had pre surgery anxiety before, but I still want this video for all the people who do! There are countless people out there who are scared to death when it comes to them having surgery or a close relative/friend having it, so I really do think that it could make the difference to have a video of an actual doctor taking the time to make them understand what is that actually about

I like the points made about social media. I'll also add, that when it comes to kids climbing trees, riding bikes, and doing all sorts of outdoor activities, the benefits greatly outweigh the risks. Whereas there aren't nearly as many benefits to kids using social media. I'm a mom, and I'd rather my kids break their wrist hopping a fence than get put down by strangers online.

The more you touch upon deep topics the more you generate controversy, that's a natural response, opinions conflict, especially when discussions concern nuance. What's less natural is people who get offended by intellectual disagreement.

I agree with this. Disagreement within a nuanced topic is to be expected, but it's unacceptable to see the amount of appealing to personal testimony. That said I do feel that it's good Dr. Mike cleared up some things not because the viewers in the previous topics lashing out were validated in their bad behavior, but because as the presenter (as for any host/presenter) it is upon them to make sure their case and wording is used in a way that is easier to be understood. The mass majority of YT comments are most likely not medical professionals. As such they would view the usage of certain words like "atypical" without the trained mind of a medical professional.

Yes, indeed. I'll add another one: "It's not how you feel, it's how you deal." Not sure if that's the correct wording but I know I've heard of a similar saying in English. (“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Perhaps?) *Sometimes* it can't be helped if something is incredibly targeting and offensive, but *most* of the time, it's how you handle that incident or information. Taking responsibility for one's own emotions is part of being an adult. And past that, only you, yourself, can choose how to react to those incidents, if you react at all. You hold the power over yourself.

Agree with Haidt. There’s healthy pain that you grow and learn from, and then there’s toxic pain that is completely unnecessary and doesn’t allow you to move on whatsoever. Social media is a breeding ground for the latter.

Social media, in general, is trash
@StormTheSquid
@StormTheSquid 2 жыл бұрын
From my experience, either I'm the unluckiest person in history, or all pain is toxic pain and those who say otherwise are toxic people. And at the same time, either I'm extremely lucky in this specific case, or social media is also a good way to *escape* that toxic pain, depending of what you mean by social media. If you just mean interacting with people you already know irl, then yeah it's gonna be hell if it's already bad irl. But if you interact with DIFFERENT people online than you do irl, that is, in my opinion and experience, the healthy kind of social media. See, I was bullied for most of my life for one reason or another. Even online. But online, I was bullied so much less. I met every romantic interest I've had online. All of my best friends I've met online. Heck I found my therapist and my doctor online. I found a specialist who could diagnose my autism through the internet. I found out what autism even was through reddit of all places and one kind soul who decided to explain to me what it was and how they thought I had it. I've spoken to online crisis lines who have saved my life multiple times. Sure, my experience may be atypical. But to blanketly say "avoid social media" or "avoid the internet", if I had listened to that "advice", I just about guarantee I wouldn't be alive today.

@@StormTheSquid KZbin Comments and Discord chat servers are social media. Video games played online are not. Your point, in fact, doesn't stand. Your point was that getting rid of social media is basically the same thing as abandoning the internet entirely, which is ridiculous. On the bullying vs bad social experience i have an anecdote... My nephew was being mean to a couple kids at school. He has a bad attitude he got from watching his mom and it was coming off to kids he didn't get along with. When he was in 2nd grade, a little girl wrote him a note telling him he was being mean and she didn't want be friends until he learned to be nicer. His mom and grandma had a fit! They tried saying the girl was bullying him amd singling my nephew out, and went to the principal... It was a mess. I read the note looked at them both and said, "The girl is not wrong. I love the boy but you have to admit he gets snotty when he thinks he is smarter, or he doesn't like what you say. Imagine that tone as a kid hearing it. If anything your son is being a bully and is getting called out for it." Turned out I was right, he had been picking on kids who were having trouble with school but until his mom pointed out the note situation, the teacher and principal had no idea. We have to stop thinking every negative interaction children have is automatically bullying or traumatizing. Kids have to learn. That girl was being put down bit figured she was going to handle ot herself. She basically told my nephew "until you get some respect you can bug off," and good for her! We are the adults and need to learn to evaluate before reacting so our kids learn how to as well amd find proper ways to handle a situation.

I’m an EMT. Nowhere near the level of knowledge and training of an MD/DO. I get that atypical presentation in an acute cardiac event presents differently in some people (atypical presentation) and can be more common in the elderly and females. Repeated psychological stress is more harmful than adapting to improve physical skills post injury. Many people who watch these videos may not get that like a healthcare provider does. Making these videos elaborating on points that may have been misunderstood is a really good thing. You clearly care about your fans and followers. Thanks, Dr. Mike.

Anesthesia Awareness! Please talk about the realistic complications that could happen! Edit: Question 1: Why are medications that can cause memory loss administered? Is it for the protection of the Doctor in case you do experience a traumatizing event? If so, then how often do people wake up wake up conscious of their surroundings? Question 2: Is it really possible(even if it's rare) to be completely aware and feel the pain of the surgery without the Doctor noticing? Are the cases of people experiencing the pain from heart surgery simply exaggerations or are they possible? If so, what is the likelihood? Question 3: Is there anything extra we can do that a Doctor may not tell us to help prevent this from happening? It has been a life long fear to the point that I postponed surgery on my arm for 15 years! (I posted a video with these questions on my channel) Thanks Doctor Mike

I had surgery 4 days ago they have a monitor to tell if you wake up so if u do they put u back to sleep they also use this monitor to make sure you stay asleep (but if the hospital is broke they dont have the moniter). Dont worry when you get put asleep they let you play on your iPad and u wake up two seconds after you fall asleep and the surgery is over! 👍👍

I’ve had a lot of brain surgeries for a condition called chiari malformation, having new shunt after new shunt constantly failing, especially over the past year and a half! This has become normal for me but it’s entirely understandable why people are terrified to have anything done, especially if it’s not something they’re used to. @@eoincampbell1584 I don't really think people actually want to be taught critical thinking. From my experience me, a friend of mine and a bf have all received the same amount and type of "hate" as Dr Mike when discussing similar topics. Instead of listening to what they say they just get offended and play the victim card - because you see, when you are a victim; you can make people feel sorry for you, and a lot people would rather have fake sympathy than real conversations which might help them; even though it's hard to hear it right then and there. Just look how much hate Jordan Peterson gets. I look at him as a king for critical thinking, yet just two days ago I almost got into a row with a woman who argued to me that his reasoning (about women in high performing fields) are a bunch of bull. (mind you, I'm a female in male dominated private corporations and she's single mum of two with no jobs.)
@eoincampbell1584
@eoincampbell1584 4 жыл бұрын
@@iamnyssaki I was surprised by the pessimism of what you were saying but then you mentioned Jordan Peterson and it made more sense. I definitely wouldn't hold him up as much of a critical thinker, given his proclivity to react to a specific movement or group and then try to find evidence that supports his reactions instead of actually taking in the whole picture. Jordan Peterson is currently pretty famous as the guy who opposed C16 in Canada which was a bill passed to extend the same protections to gender minorities as racial or sexual ones. His argument for not passing it essentially boiled down to this idea that the law could be interpreted to sue or arrest people for misgendering someone. He continuously argued this point despite the fact that no other law that extended these protections had been used in such a way (such as a racial one being used to prosecute someone assuming the incorrect ethnicity), that no part of the law mentioned misgendering, only the general world guidelines for what transphobic guidelines, and that almost no one else in the government and only one lawyer actually agreed with him (as in, the people who would be interpreting the law directly stated that was not a way in which they were interpreting it, nor a way in which it could be interpreted). Along the way while arguing his point Peterson goes on angry tangents on the education of children about trans issues and how he personally finds that disturbing, which ultimately reveals how all of his effort to stop the bill is just a reactionary dislike of trans people masked by his pseudoscientific belief that a person can not be trans gender. Now what I'm ultimately saying here is that you shouldn't necessarily hold any other person as "a king for critical thinking" as I've seen that be used by many people as an excuse not to actually think critically and do research. Personally I like to put the responsibility on myself to think through a subject, and when I see someone like Peterson who acts like he has all the answers and like he's already thought all of it through so you don't have to, that's when I'm most skeptical.
@georgina4777

Isn’t it nice when people make comments on subjects they are well versed in so they can actually hold an opinion and practice critical thinking ! I’m in Australia and haven’t heard of that political movement you mention but nice to read some well informed back and forth. Re critical thinking should be primary goal of education system I somewhat agree. I learnt about it and it’s still drilled into us and marked in assignments through my university degree in psychology. There’s elements of the skill that could be applied to final years of high school content but I personally found high school curriculum did not want me to expand further to understand a complex idea it wanted me to believe that x=y no questions about it because that’s what the curriculum outlines and too much out side of the box thinking and hypotheses testing won’t get you the points in your exams. That is one student at one school in Australia’s experience and opinion another could have a very different story.

@@eoincampbell1584 While I certainly wouldn't consider Jordan Peterson as the "king for critical thinking" (as you said, giving that title to anyone is a bit dubious), and I am not a fan of his (but I don't view him negatively), but I wouldn't say he was incorrect for opposing the bill as it was written. Anyone with the assumption that it will never be interpret the same way he did, certainly hasn't ran into people who interpret misgendering as 'willful promotion of hatred' or 'incitement of hatred (that is likely to lead to a breach of peace)'. The people with these views are typically college students, which will become the next generation of lawyers and judges, so I think it pretty relevant seeing how they interpret misgendering. In fact one could say this weird twisting of current laws is already occurring. I wouldn't normally consider s.38 of the Family Law Act to be interpreted such that misgendering your child by calling them by their biological gender, to be considered "Family violence". But that is a ruling that occurred in Vancouver, British Columbia. Now perhaps I am missing some facts about the British Columbia case, I presume you will correct me of my ignorance; but base on what I currently know about it, it seems to be a clear case of what Jordan Peterson is normally worried about; and what are you are saying wouldn't occur.

If that kid's also getting bullied on social media then there's no escape and it's chronic and unnecessary harassment that they end up dealing with constantly, and there's no other way to deal with it other than to turn it off and not think about it, but how do you ask a teenager to do that?

@iRifle87 yes go talk to a surgeon for questions regarding medicine instead of the family doctor. Edit: in retrospect the sarcasm in my comment isn't visible but really, surgeon's aren't as qualified in particular areas compared to a family doctor and vice versa. To assume that a surgeon is the pinnacle of medicine due to their pay grade is idiocy.

I didn't agree with most critiques Dr Mike got, I agreed with what he said. But you guys take it personally. "We got your back" like it's a personal offense. Not being able to take a different point of view is a clear sign of ignorance. If you get a criticism, argument, and don't just call the person "whiny", that's just being... stupid. and ignorant.

Becoming outspoken is something I had to learn as my illnesses progressed. One misdiagnosis lead my stomach doctor to tell me that I was drinking to much. I said drinking to much, how is that possible, it takes me up to 10 days to finish a 6 pack of beer. I called my arthritis doctor and told him I was in the hospital w bleeding in my stomach. He immediately called my other doctor and told him I was having a classic reaction to being allergic to Prednisone & changed my prescription and it was found to be the problem. If you don't speak up, a misdiagnosis can prolong your problem, I speak up and ask questions about everything!

Doctor Mike thank you so much for recognizing that it wasn’t all hate. A lot of us in the chronic illness community have had so many bad experiences with doctors that many of us were (wrongly) thinking that you were defending mistreatment due to the PTSD that has been caused by being dismissed, mistreated, and other horrible things done by bad doctors. I am a big fan of you but I was unable to watch all of the medical bias video due to how I along with others I know have been treated in the past. I always appreciate how open minded you are and how caring and great of a doctor you are.

Dr Mike is right about bullying. I have diagnosed post traumatic stress because my experience was an extension of constant bullying for years. Without proper guidance on how to handle it I was left to handle it on my own. I went through depression and withdrawal and nearly lost my life as a kid. Because if I punched and broke a bullies nose and go him bleeding I’m wrong and got in trouble. Yet If I did nothing I got pummeled by the same kid that wouldn’t leave me alone. And adults didn’t take me serious or do anything about it when I told them. Heck I even had times where they got pissed at me for asking for help saying it was my fault. So I withdrew and hid from the world. So I 110% agree on kids not being on social media until they are mature and have the right guidance and tools to be able to deal with life situations.
