Being an old horse trader I like the way you handled the decision making on this. When it comes to clutch and transmissions they can be expensive. The headlights could be electrical and that can be expensive. The air could be the compressor, the lines, or the radiator. You are presented problems in three major systems that is a flag. Its even better to spend a bit more and get a used car without the flags. I saw he checked the tail pipe. You check that tail pipe for oil burning. The head for oil leaks. You said that maybe the oil was low that could be another flag. You should meet the person where they keep the car and look at the spot where they park to check for oil leaks. You might not have thought about that one. There will be other used cars to check out. You got a car that is running right and you have taken care of it. The car you want to buy you don't know if he has burned the cylinders and values suffer from fail to change oil correctly. You probably know all these things. Good call. Have a great day.

A 2008 Suzuki Swift with that mileage in such poor condition is barely worth $1,000, so the seller's asking price seems a little adventurous. Personally, I would keep and enjoy the Cayenne. It's a lovely model in the right colour and in nice condition.

A car is an absolutely necessary thing in Kyiv nowadays as a means of quick and far escape in case of 02/24/24 type emergency. For that reason I’d get something with diesel engine and good (= not city) clearance. Used 4x4 Karoq or Tiguan to be able to drive 500+ km without refueling

100% agree. A diesel SUV is the perfect car for Ukraine. You get a lot of stuff into the trunk in case of an emergency, it has a long range and it's more comfortable to drive a car like this, since there are still roads in Ukraine that haven't been fixed yet. I hope he reads this.
@curiousnomadic

That's false. The trains proved the quickest escape as they don't run out of gas after 400 miles. Ukraine proved how essential trains are especially during wartime and highlighted the US' desperate need for them.

@@curiousnomadicNope. Trains get cancelled if their lines pass by an unsafe area any close - remember whole regions of Chernihiv and Sumy whose train service was halted a day before the invasion. The only known example is evacuation trans from (relatively safe) Kyiv to (even safer) Lviv. Also, the range of 400 mi mentioned is enough to find an escape from a sieged region.

I'm driving around in a Ford Focus, close to top of the range, so some nice trims and accessories. It's 8 years old, yet super reliable, and absolutely the cheapest car to maintain or get parts for. Quite roomy in the front, and with a 125bhp 1.0 litre Ecoboost engine it's not too thirsty, but has the acceleration of a 1600cc normally aspirated car. Quite honestly, you could get one with a high mileage and then with long periods of dormancy, it would eventually become low mileage. Another option is to get an eBike. My brother has one and loves it. Leave it charging overnight and it will take you over long distances quite fast, and with the minimum of effort if you want it to. Moreover, it would help with your get-fit campaign, as you can conserve the battery by riding it manually whenever you get the urge.

Yes absolutely. Car guy here. Get something that gets 50 miles per gallon, probably diesel so you can actually go places without it killing you. Older diesel vw passats got 1000 miles to the tank. I'm sure the newer cars are better than those. Make sure it is comfortable so it doesn't give you a headache. 7:20 Yeah frick like that Vitara. 5.1l/100km is 46mpg! Man cars in Europe really get way better fuel economy. Thank you Vladim! What a relief you didn't get that old beater which was worth less than half of what that guy wanted. To put it in perspective I saw n the US a 2014 Ford Focus manual trans (40mpg) that I was thinking of looking at with less than 100,000 miles and nothing wrong with it for $3900 that you know will last 20 more years Someone snatched it up though. I thought it would take a while because hardly anyone drives stick in the US anymore but it was gone fast. Consider Renaults, Fords and Mazdas. All really good cars (incl. Ford Europe). Mazdas are usually built in Japan so they'll be good. Scotty Kilmer recommends those.

Johnny! Look into getting something like a Land Cruiser or Lexus LX! It'll be something you're familiar with in terms of size and luxury except MUCH more reliable and easier to maintain. They may not have the gnarly exhaust note or the handling capabilities of the Porsche, but boy do they demand absolute respect when on the road, there's a reason so many leaders and diplomats choose it as their SUV of choice around the world. It will however drink your lunch money, they're thirsty beasts. But they're engineered to perfection, they will never leave you stranded, they'll always get you to and from your destination, they're very comfortable and spacious, they're insanely capable in the instance that you DO need to take it off-road, and they're tough as tanks.

If I were you, I would buy either a Toyota or Honda with low miles. Most Toyota and Honda engines will go for 200,000 miles and start requiring major repairs at that 200,000 miles. I believe brands like Subaru or Suzuki will not be as good as the Toyota or Hondas. Not sure why your tires cost $3000 for your Porsche. If you have Costcos in Ukraine buy your tires from Costco and I always pay a little more and buy Michelines. Remember if the tires are new but they are old stock (have sat in the shop for a long time they start to break down sooner, always check the date when the tires were made, there are letters and numbers on the tire that tell you the production date). I think a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord are really good cars and their size match your body! Rather than a small Suzuki.

Stick with your Porche I reckon. I've got an older, automatic Mitsubishi Challenger V6 which is a 4x4 and while I don't need the off-road side of it any more (I moved into town) I enjoy having a car I step up into rather than having to lower myself into. Lower back and hip issues make that a must have. So it costs a bit more to run but, so what. I like it, even though it bounces around a bit and rattles as well. Your Porche sounds like a comfortable ride and can handle various scenarios which gives you flexibility.

Okay, my previous comment was deleted for some reason, but anyway: summer tires dont cost 3k in Ukraine, you can shop online for about 150-200$ brand new tires, there are plenty of them, you don't need to buy the best. Also, never trade-in your car, you want even get half of it's real price. Buy good car on small budget almost impossible in Ukraine , probably better buy it in Germany ? VW Golf or something like that. I bought VW polo 2008 and pretty enjoy it. My investment was about 300$ to get it in good state.

I know, its a "brand", prestige, , blah blah blah but car is a freaking car... you should get from point A to point B, not struggling to get the trunk open or even start the engine. Get something less fancy and more reliable, like Toyota RAV4 or even Kia Sportage, you get the comfort of SUV and reliability of the quality product.

Johnny, had to really think though your dilemma on your Porsche! (1) Can't see spend $23k on a new one when you don't spend too much time (2) Risk of owning something that expensive in Ukraine! So, if the Porsche is worth 100k or so, that means your could be saving/investing the 60-80K and risking the other 20-30k on a new Vitara or Jimny. I actually thought the Suzuki Jimny look pretty nice and 30k seems reasonable for a brand new one. Overall, your still saving on your total risk of Porsche vs Suzuki! Especially in the gas and repair market! 😁😁 I know, those cars are not Porsche's! 👍👍

over 200k kms and 3800$..? in germany those cost under 2k.. or say it the other way, for 3.8k you get one with under 100k km long time parking is the worst enemy for all cars. since last month i fix up my Audi a4 (for a roadtrip to kiev this late summer btw..) it stood for about 2,5 years now and it has more problems caused through standing, than everything else.

Porsche in Ukraine is not just a car. It is an Elite Status. When you driving your Porsche, police are bowing to it and almost never stop you (buy elite number plate to make them bow even lower). When you drivng near the club, girls jumping inside Porsche without questions. So definitely sell it coz people think that it is some bribe-taker driving.
