Hi Alina, greetings from New Zealand. We moved here in 2005, my son was than just 8. I came from Germany to the US, loved it sooo. We lived in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Dearborn Michigan, I absolutely loved living there. We moved to Windsor Ontario Canada, because we couldn't get US citizenship. Go figure, all the illegals get it. We became Canadian citizens in 1994. After I met and married my second husband, we ended up in New Zealand. I have a love/hate relationship with New Zealand. It is too hot for us in the Summer, no winter sports. Well, we have to drive too Auckland for the ice skating and skiing. The snow planet is the place to go skiing and Paradise ice, the ice skating. It takes me 2 plus hours from Hamilton to reach them places. Or in the Winter here, one can go skiing on an active volcano. Yup you heard right, Mt Ruapehu, is the place. But now they take that away too.😢 Canada is absolutely shocking right now, I would keep my citizenship, like we did, and get outa there. Your Apartment is amazing, too this is too say, we lived in an Condo downtown Windsor Ontario, that had a pool, hot tub, sauna and gym. It used to cost $650.00 CAN, in early 2000. We used to love it...❤ Now it's old and crappy and they want 1600.00 CAN for the 1 bedroom condo. We would love to return too Canada, but hear the warning bells loud and clear. Thanks for all this.... So ya, move to South Asia. Also, you still can visit your mum for 6 month, and she can visit with you. The Canadian taxes are crazy, and surely I wouldn't pay them. The Healthcare system is failing too.

Alina, ignore the comments of people who have absolutely no idea. Bangkok is one of the greatets megacities on our planet. The rental price is very good for what is on offer. I only use Airbnb in Thailand, it's not the cheapest but by far the best alternative for shorter stays of under 6 months.

I lived (based myself) in BKK for a year and it was probably the best year of my life. The buzz of the city is off the scale and you can live so cheaply buying restaurant quality food from lovely little ladies at their street stalls 3 times a day. As Alina states, it’s so cheap to fly or take a bus to places like Laos,Vietnam, Cambodia or further in to South East Asia. I loved the convenience of dropping my laundry off and collecting it hours later fresh and folded for a ridiculously cheap price. Should also state that Thai people are possibly the friendliest people you could ever wish to meet. Yes Alina, 100% you should base yourself in BKK🇹🇭❤

As a Thai person from another province, I find visiting new places to be incredibly exhilarating. Whenever I find myself in Bangkok, I enjoy exploring the city and discovering new things. But it's not just within Thailand that I seek adventure - traveling abroad to both wealthy and less developed countries alike always leaves me feeling even more excited, challenged, and constantly uncovering impressive new discoveries.

As a middle-aged fellow Canadian who lived abroad between the ages of 27 and 46, including 2 years in Bangkok, I endorse your choice to relocate overseas at this time in your life. I'm glad I did it when I was full of beans, so to speak. Now in my 50s and re-settled in Canada, I don't know if I could summon the energy to do it again although I do want to escape the winter when I retire.

@@AlinaMcleod Alina, getting that Thai elite visa can indeed be a tricky business BUT it can be done, provided you do some groundworks with agencies (preferably a law firm for first time application) that specializes in handling such matters. In the case of retirement visa, you need to open a bank account showing a deposit of USD40K or thereabout and a health insurance policy that cost around USD2K annually. This is a renewable yearly visa. My brother in law resides now in Phuket under retirement visa. To simplify matters, many well known KZbinrs move around countries, staying up to 3 months each on extendable visa. This may relief you on the tax issue too. Once again, all the best to you in whatever decision you take.

As a 57 year old woman from small town Saskatchewan, I love watching your videos! I recognize myself in you as you explore the world and your struggles on deciding where to go, live, etc. with Canada pulling heartstrings. Your analytical conclusions often clashing with emotional tugs will be something you will most likely struggle with for some time but take heart in knowing you’re on the right track! I left Canada in my early thirties and have tried on several occasions to return back “home” but could never make it last. I love Canada, love Saskatchewan and am very much Canadian at heart but the current economy, culture and general decline of our beloved country cannot be denied. Hence, I have made the hard decision to end my expat life and become an immigrant, making a new country my home. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. I find Canada treats me better as a tourist than a resident or citizen. Go where you can grow!

Thanks for sharing a bit of your life with us as well as your thoughts for the future. As a mid 60s Canadian, I've often wondered what I would do if I were younger and didn't have anything tying me down in Canada, particularly if I had a job like yours where it didn't matter where I lived. Given today's world, I'm pretty sure I'd do the same thing you are contemplating. Follow your dreams. You can always move back to Canada if and when the time comes. Even if you didn't do You Tube 100% of the time, I'd bet you'd be surprised at the opportunities that are out there for a person with your skills. The only thing I would say is that places like Thailand won't always be as cheap as they are now. Retired (and Working for you) did a recent video showing how much rents have increased since the pandemic, and Bangkok's popularity doesn't seem to be slowing down. As a big fan/subscriber, I wish you nothing but the best in whatever you decide.

Just spent a month on Soi 57 in Thong Lo, fantastic area but not the most inexpensive. Great places to eat at any budget (try the street food on the north side of Sukhumvit between Soi 55 & 57, open until 4 AM) Regarding residency, I declared myself non-resident in the early 2000’s when I moved to South America. No real implications other than loosing OHIP and paying less taxes on any income earned in Canada. And if/when you return to Canada full time the you renew your residency and there’s a three month wait for OHIP to kick in. You are always a Canadian citizen regardless, and that never changes 🇨🇦

Alina, your Rhythm in Thonglor looks a lot like our Rhythm in Ekkamai, except that our pool is on the 36th floor and our bldg is older. I think they have the same furniture package in both buildings. YES you should consider making Bangkok your home base and do a 12-month lease where you’ll be able to get an equivalent place for about 20,000 or go for a larger unit for 25,000. And if you just get a BIT off the beaten track, the price goes down and the quality goes up. For instance, last year we were at Phra Khanong, fabulous building 5 min. walk to the BTS and with a beer garden/night market at our doorstep and a traditional market in the sois and subsois leading to the canal. I’m told there are some wonderful deals right now in condos around Udom Suk and Punnawithi. By the way, Thonglor sounds like “TONG-law.” There’s no “th” sound in Thai, and that final “r” is only there to help Brits say the “o” properly. These r’s in Thai romanizations confuse North American rhotic speakers.

If you contact the owner of codomenium room and tell them that you want to sign rental contract at least a year, you can lower the monthly rental quite significantly. Moreover, if you sign the contract for 2 years, you can negotiate even more. Tonglor area is a good place to live in bangkok; however, the rent is higher than other locations. If you move further along the Sukhumvit road 5-8 BTS stations from Tonglor area, the rent will significantly lower. You can save more if you want to do so. Have a good time in Thailand.

Yes, of course. I stated that a long term lease would be at least 30% less than airbnb.

Hi Alina Great video you picked a beautiful apartment. If you are thinking moving from Canada to either SE Asia or Eastern Europe spend sometime in the less favouable times of the year to get a feel for it. I have never been to Eastern Europe but expect it probably can get very cold and SE Asia can get very hot and humid as well as a lot of rain. Cheers

Yeah that's one of my biggests cons about potentially living in SEA is the monsoon/extremely hot season. Somewhere in Eastern Europe is my front runner because that's where I'm originally from, used to the culture and they have the 4 seasons (and not as intensely as Canada!).

We could stay a few weeks the most in BKK due to air pollution and traffic jams. Also, the visa restrictions are not for us as we are still hopping between Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Happy travels 🎉

Echoing your comments at the end -- I'm in my early 50s, spent my entire adult life so far in "cheap" basement suites and apartments in the Tri-Cities/ GVRD, Kitsilano and now North Vancouver. Came to the conclusion that, now, with my location-independant or passive income, it makes no sense to stay in Canada. I'm hoping to start off on an epic road-trip that really never ends next year, but do want a place (or two) that I can return to on the regular --- think of Nomad Capitalist's "Trifecta" strategy -- maybe buying a small place in Cartagena or Ecuador or renting long term in Thailand might work well for me. That apartment is definitely nice, if a little cozy for my liking -- Cha-am is probably more my speed -- like you, I need the quiet but want the amenities. How spoiled am I? Certainly fortunate to now have the ability! Got a chuckle (and a bit of a shock) at your cache of "beauty supplies". I really doubt you need most of that, lol. Cheers!...from North Vancouver

Your lighting always looks so beautiful in your videos (or maybe your face is just that naturally beautiful and glowing? ☺️). I am curious what digital nomads like to use for lighting in their videos. I just dragged my giant ring light to Costa Rica from the US, but I am sure there must be a better way!! Is there a portable light you recommend?? I love your place in Bangkok. My husband and I are starting to get the itch to travel in southeast Asia again!!

Thank you! It's just good ol natural light! I used to use a ring light as well and while they are helpful when you need something really direct and no good windows you can use, I find they are too harsh and artificial looking. Hope you guys make it out to SEA soon!

By the way, I am 30 years older than you are, but like yourself (I am not youtuber though) I can work from everywhere. So I travel about 10 times a year. I am old man but still active. Oh, I like your dad. Whatever you want to do, just do it Alina.

i think you found a really lovely place to stay . if it works for your budget then living short time in Bangkok is a nice idea . yet it brings some uncertainty because the rules in Thailand change very quickly . so i'm thinking a permanent move is not worth the risk

As a fellow Canadian, I've been a digital nomad for almost 2 yrs, mainly in Mexico and Asia. I'm also wondering if it makes sense to go back to Canada, since everything is so cheap here in South East Asia. The only problem is I can't stand the heat in the summer. I visited Bangkok early this month and it's extremely hot and the traffic was horrible. Maybe I will go to east Europe this summer.
