They're trying to "teach" them to hear, to isolate themselves from the deaf community, and "be normal". It's awful. I taught deaf students, and I had one student whose mother wouldn't speak to him/communicate with him unless he used his CI, which hurt him. It's barbaric.

I know, right? Sometimes, my fiancé gets up while we're watching TV just to get me my water bottle and fill it up for me because he simply knows I'll get up to fill it up myself. And during the weekend, I get up from the couch to get myself a glass of wine and will bring one back for him. Sometimes, he'll come back from his grocery run with pomegranate or gingerbread cookies during winter because he knows I love them and during my grocery run, if I happen to see truffle flavored chips, I'll get a bag for him because I know he's obsessed with black truffle. That's just how our relationship works and we're both really happy with it.

A friend of mine even used "simp" earlier today, but only as a joke about how gaga a couple characters we like are for each other. With regard to OP's guy, it sounds like this is largely a product of their very different upbringings. I myself will help people all the live long day, but I struggle with people doing things for me due to my (tbh, not so good) childhood. @@carolsimpson4422 First, I didn't say whether my friend is or isn't a feminist. She is, for the record- in fact, she's very progressive and passionate about social justice in all it's forms (her current thing is the ongoing genocide in Gaza- she's Muslim and living in the UAE, so this hits particularly close to home). It's one of many reasons why we're friends and have been for years. Kindly don't assume you know her like that. Also, the joke didn't even involve women. It was two dudes we were talking about and we were grinning over how in "everyone can see it" love they are but haven't admitted it yet (ie. the "simping" goes equally in both directions). Context matters, as does the audience. What you find offensive isn't always necessarily the case for someone else. Please don't assume you can police language and behavior based on limited information. You're bound to jump to conclusions and get things wrong, as you did here. As for the guy in question here, I'm well aware that he wasn't joking. But I'm also not reactionary and assuming that this is some giant red flag the size of China. She said he picked this stuff up from somewhere on Reddit. You know, where the story itself and every single one of those comments were from. We don't know the specifics past that. Sure, Reddit can be a cesspit of toxicity, but like any other social media platform, there are good places and people on there too. No need to jump on the "dump him immediately" bandwagon just yet. Story 1: While I haven't directly had to deal with such things, I have heard from others in my area dealing with disability rights. My 1st thought hearing the story was that since the public deaf school "nearby" (an hour away is nearby?) does not provide what this particular child needs, then the public school system would definitely be responsible for covering the cost of the ASL helper in the private school. The parents still would be responsible for the standard tuition at the private school, but their finances would not need to cover what legally the disability funding is set aside for. It would only take getting the right forms filled out along with statements from the child's doctors showing that her needs were different from the kids getting by with "integration to the hearing public" style services. It was so very wrong for the private school to just blatantly deny they could provide an ASL interpreter. Whether they were really ignorant that they could be reimbursed by tax dollars or they simply didn't want to do their part of the research & paperwork to help the parents, that was so wrong. Surely they knew there was a system where kids who had special needs like wheelchairs or such could still get public assistance while in a private school. That school had never once had a child that needed temporary physical help due to an injury, or never once had a young child getting speech therapy for a lisp, or some other special need? I HIGHLY doubt it. Since they are already taking OP & husband's money for their other kids, you'd think they'd be happy to do what research they needed to help the parents willing to pay them another tuition fee at least. I'm glad the other students there seem happy & are getting a good education from caring teachers, but it seems like the principal & other administration staff don't actually care about the kids & only care about the school as a business. ☹️

Totally agree. It's just a framework to help people contextualize how they best feel love, how their partner best feels love, and how you and your partner best express love. You can have one or two or five, there are no rules stating that you have to pick one and stick with it. Just because something came from a homophobic person, that doesn't automatically mean that all of their ideas are wrong or invalid. I found the love languages to be really helpful as a neurodivergent person, as it helped me contextualize how I best feel love and how I best express love. And not just romantic love, it's even been helpful with my relationships with my siblings. For example, I'm big on physical affection, as is one of my siblings. The other two hate physical affection and are more about acts of service/gifts. They give me hugs because they know it's important to me, and I express my love to them with gifts. It means more to me because I know they don't like giving hugs, but they do it because they know it matters to me, and that's how I know that they really love me. It's just not that deep.

When it comes to love language, I show my love through saying I love you, making things for others, and helping. I remember hearing of a story where a kid was quite sad because he was quite touch-starved and his parents were stupidly busy. His love language was touch and he hadn't had a hug in a while (like his parents were so busy they wouldn't come home until his was already in bed). I think there's some truth to love languages, especially when it comes to the autisim spectrum (some with autisim can't stand touch but show their love in other ways).

This stuff really depends on state stuff and the school themselves...Ive seen differences in all kinds of things from disability to reading. Some schools prioritize certain stuff over others. I went to a school that only had one health class which is different in other places. I will also say as someone whos worked in daycare the last several years with the pendemic and other things and a lot of stuff either is on the school or on the parents. I remember when my little brother was in school he also had to read at home more compared to what I did. It really just depends as districts and whats required is sketchy all over.

My advice for story 1 is to not make a fuss, get her in, then schedule a meeting to discuss her accommodations and bring a lawyer to that meetings. Schools will typically cave when a lawyer makes their presence known and suing is no longer necessary.

I'm pretty sure that the school offering what they did was less about maintaining their image and more about them violating federal law and being threatened with a lawsuit that they would most likely not win and what they were offering was basically an off-the-books settlement to avoid that.

Story two: I am so confused by this couple and those like them. They think they're in love, but they don't like or respect each other. They think they should get married, but the basic kindnesses of cohabitation are issues of contention. Doing little stuff for each other comes with the territory, and shouldn't feel like a chore or be an invitation to a debate. People, this is not complicated. Your romantic life partner should also be among your dearest friends and be a compatible roommate. If they can't be an easy and comfortable part of your life as friend and roommate, they are not spouse material for you.

I’m glad the school my kids are/will be going to isn’t insane. My youngest is disabled and I feel fairly okay with him being able to get what he needs there. There are kids there who are autistic, need mobility aids, and I see a deaf boy with hearing aids when I’m there. They have like 6 teachers and each class has one or more education assistants. It’s not a big school only about one class per grade as it’s one of the first schools built in the city and made for a much smaller population. The kindergarten class was split into two after about a month because they had so many kids at once this year, about 26

"Deaf culture", I'm sorry to say, is an example of trying to make a virtue out of a restriction. Since it is so fantastic and superior, any reasonable parent should render their child deaf so they can participate in this paradise. Obviously, I'm being hyperbolic, but the stance of some deaf people is so ridiculous it deserves pointing out. Despite handicaps, we should strive for everyone to live as a fulfilling life as possible. Making the best of a situation does not mean insisting that situation is the "best".

Love languages should just be a starting point to help discuss needs. Everybody has a certain amount of the languages but you lean more towards one or two. So its a short hand to say of all the ways i receive love i value this type more. When your parent says his is one completely opposite from yours it can bring to light why yall aren't connecting or getting annoyed. For example my ex wanted to do activities together to feel love but i value quality time so i felt unloved sense he always needed an activity when spending time together. So when you understand why theres a disconnect you can then work on it.

No? The earlier a child learns to read, the better it is for their development. Babies can learn to read. I learned to read the alphabet before I spoke. It's insane to me that global education doesn't start teaching reading and writing at an age of 2-3 years old.
