It really depends on their lyrics if all they now rap about is money, yacht's and Krystal, yes they should retire. If they still have something deep to say or a good story to tell, they should tell it.

I think you are speaking on artists that don't put out new music. Tons of rappers are touring (reunion and 90s tours w/other artists). He's also spinning it to meet his thought. Rappers that are over 40 that are BIG names have moved into making 10 and 20 times the money they made in music by doing other things (Ice Cube, Snoop, Dre, 50 Cent, JayZ, etc). The music game is not the same and profitability is nonexistent if done in the manner those artists came up in. Stopping at 40 for those artists is moving into ownership of things that will keep them relevant without rapping.

Styles is off and missing a huge component. The reason they say stop rapping at 40 because of the contents of rap. No man at the age of 40 should be rhyming about that type of degeneracy and decadence. One may argue that these rappers can rap positve messages, but primarily they dont. Generally speaking, positive rap is not a successful form of rap for a reason. These older guys ALWAYS conform to the newer style and even manage to make songs with kids their children's age.

And like you said, they made millions through the most popular genre today based on the contents of their music as a younger person. And now they sit in palaces telling young black youths to elevate??? Styles just made a album with Dave East(a younger person). What positive message was on that album? U can't be serious???

True. Rebellion, subversion and anti-establishment (in any form) was always at the very heart of what drove the genre. And those things are synonymous with youth. But the genre itself is still very young (even younger, if we count from when the MC replaced the DJ as the focal point as it became mainstream) so there's more growth to do and more viewpoints of the world and life in general to explore.

@TheSundayCafeKZbinr TheSundayCafeKZbinr But that's the problem, it's not gonna stop. Everyone agreeing with Styles now GOT DAMN well if Styles wasn't saying this everybody would be like "Yeah these bums need to stop rapping at 40, they're washed up and irrelevant." Y'all say that about these dudes that been in the game for decades with multiple hit albums, but suddenly everyone thinks it's cool for a 40+ rapper still trying to get in the game should keep rapping. HOGWASH! Lol. People are sheep and only agree with people they idolize and like. Stop the bullshit! Also, we know that hearing someone rap at 40 still repping the streets and the destruction of our community is not cool, so yeah hang it up because they're not gonna stop pushing the negative narrative. It would be different if the old heads were bringing upliftment and maturity to the game, saying something different than what the teens, 20 year olds etc are talking about, but they won't. It will be the same bullshit. Although I do agree with Styles about being from the hood and being brain washed because we are told if you didn't make it by 40 (whatever you're into) hang it up. Actually, society, not just the hood, has told my generation (Gen X...I'm 48) if you didn't make shit happen by 30 you probably won't. And the reason other genres such as Jazz, Gospel, Rock, REAL R&B (not this watered down bullshit now), don't stop because the vibe is totally different. It's not destructive (for the most part) the way hip-hop is. I'm a brotha' who was born and raised on hip-hop but unfortunately, facts are facts.

I feel like if you haven’t made it as a rapper by the time you turn 30 you may need to reconsider something else, but if you are already in the game, making music and people like it, keep going for as long as you can. Certainly at forty your music should have evolved.

You have to build your fan base when you’re young. People of a certain (age 40 plus ) don’t go to concerts like that unless your their all-time favorite and they been rocking with for years. Money in the music industry is made on concerts and performances not streaming.

Hanging up your ambitions of becoming a fanous artist by 40 is basically the universal rule among all races and for all genres. No one is telling snoop or Dre or Eminem to retire but if you haven't made it yet and you are 40, you probably arent going to make it. We have just really only seen young rappers at a big level because the genre is so new. Its like DJing. Its so new that when you are old doing it, you are the minority by a lot. Eventually we will have many generations and people of all ages

@@keenanwalker-mr2co Because most rappers at 40 started at a time when "nice" was a thing.
