Should Remakes Be Considered for Game of the Year?

Should remakes be considered for Game of the Year, or should they have their own category? Was Resident Evil 4 Remake transformed enough to be considered this year? The Game Awards think so, but do you?

I think remakes are deserving of being included in these sorts of awards. A better question to ask is how Spiderman 2 got nominated for GOTY

here's a thing, Remake can be as good as brand new, like they didn't do 1 to 1and the game plays very differently from the original unlike that Last of Us Part 1, it's just graphics and engine overhaul, this is the third time there's a Remake nominee in Game of the Year like RE2 Remake was nominated in 2019, FF7 Remake got nominated in 2020

Yeah I know they can be great, I loved FF7 remake, and I think it was different enough it warranted it’s nomination, but how much does a game have to changed for us to say it’s really worthy of being nominated over games that came out brand new that year?

I don’t think remakes should be considered for GOTY buuuut if the game is critically praised then it should be considered for awards of any kind. If it is better than ANY other game released this year then I suppose it would deserve to win.

Totally, but I think a lot of people would agree there were other games that were as good or even better that came out this year. But of course, people will disagree with that too lol.

​@@genjigearliveto be honest, the remakes nearly fixed on everything, story is different slighlty, conbat is way better, leon can SUPLEX CITY BITCH 24/7, Wesker can do Royal Guard, Ada can sweep kick enemy to death with her long legs, parrying albeit janky is not the worse, enemy patern is different (hence we have 1h of speedrunner rage), environment is greatly visual improved, game can ACTUALLY f-ing launch on PC Day 1 no issue compare to the list of Worst Game of The Year 2023.... characters are not overexaggerated and make us feel for them more, mods are like skyrims. RE4R deserves a remake tbh, at least once because it is such a different game that is serviced for the players and fanbase. Hell even the damn DLC is longer than RE3R and COD MW3 Remake and it costs $10, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT ? Xd

Remaster no Remake yes. But a Remaster would never ever land on this list so thats a no brainer. If a remake of a game is better then all new games of this year it is a good sign that the gaming industry walks in the wrong direction like they often do and so they can change that for future projects.

If the game is different enough from the original, yes. The RE remakes are moreso reimaginings than they are remakes anyway, so yes, RE4R counts. That said, I think it would be better to make a category specifically for remakes/remasters instead for years where it's applicable. That said, RE4R should still not be considered. Not because it's a "remake" but because it's a bad game.

This is a great remake. I do agree though it shouldn't be nominated for Game of the Year.
