Should You Be Waking Up At 5:00AM?

You might have seen videos or news articles about all the amazing benefits of waking up at 5am, 4am or anything in between.
Some of those benefits might include: being more productive, focused, motivated, happier etc..
That's complete rubbish and I'll explain why.
Getting up early won't make you more focused or productive. In fact, it could actually kill your productivity.
Just because some CEO of a company or a navy SEAL wakes up at 4am, it doesn't mean you should wake up at that time as well.
Today I'll explain why not everyone is suited to wake up that early, and why it's ok if you don't.
Then you can decide for yourself if you want to follow that advice.

I started waking up early because I had a job 10-6, but I wanted to work on my personal projects. I tried doing them afterwards, but I was spent, so I couldn't do anything. Waking up at 5:30 though, I had 4.5 hours before work to do my projects. Now the job is done, but I still wake up earlyish (i pushed one hour though, 6:30). For me, the advantage I noticed is that I get several hours of work before people start calling, email, or expecting me to be around. I think we are been conditioned for the later hours to be spent doing less productive things, like watch TV, relax, etc. so if I wake up early and go to bed early I get more done without sacrificing sleep because I have fewer of those 'non-productive' hours.

the main difference for me is the sequence of events. when I wake up early, and it's quiet that's when I can potentially do productive work. when I wake up late and sleep late, late hours are when it's quiet and potentially do productive work. however at night, even though it is as quiet as it is in the morning, I've already spent the whole day doing other stuff, and my mind just wants to relax and rest. so I end up doing more non-productive stuff. it's difficult for me to engage with productive activities like studying, writing, working on projects right up to bedtime, and then also expect good sleep when my brain has been active up to that point. this is my main reason why I still try to get up earlier and earlier, even though my natural tendencies are like those of a night owl.

I was an early bird when I was younger (7 years old and above) because school starts early like before 7am, but when I became an adult (and until now), I became a night owl. I notice that I'm much more productive at night and in the wee hours of the morning. There are times when I tried to be an early bird again, but it's just too hard. Most of the time, I get sleepy in the afternoon (afternoon slump) and I tend to nap longer than I should lol so I'm not productive P.S. I love this video because it speaks for night owls especially when our parents get mad at us for sleeping late and waking up late. This is a way for them to understand us

I tried to experiment to do both. I was ok with both. Found out it’s all about habits. Found out as well that you are ok with 6 hours of sleep and ok with more than that. Body copes. But then I’d say that waking up early is still the best. The key however is what you do with your extra hours. So unless you have a valid reason to not wake up early, you should be awake early. I know a lot of very old people, who sleep not even 6 hours their entire lives, but still they are healthy and happy and I know a lot of very old people too who sleep more than 5 hours their entire lives, but still they are healthy and happy too. It‘s ain’t that sleep that shortened life, it’s usually how you are living your life.

And sleeping enough.

I too used to go to bed late and wake up late. But after seeing articles on going to bed early and waking up early, I started doing so myself. They key to changing my cycle was to make sure I wake up early and stay awake, that way I'm too tired to stay up too late. Waking up early has helped my productivity. I go out for an early jog or walk. I do some reading. Right now I'm learning to use Blender through tutorials. All these things, before I go to work. And by the time I get to work, I'm energized and ready to get lots of work done. This is better than when I used to be a "night owl" in which I would stay up late and do nothing, wake up late and immediately go to work and get to work sleepy. I generally like videos by Better Than Yesterday, but I feel that going to bed early and waking up early is a great way to be productive. I no longer feel like there's such thing as a night owl, just people who aren't motivated to go to bed early.
@DerTolleIgel

@@RealCoachMustafa I disagree with you. I am in the lucky position, that I can start pretty late at work as we have no fixed working hours (well there are always meetings, so there is no absolute freedom). Anyway, I also thought it would be better to get up earlier. Problem is, if I go the bed earlier I cannot sleep through. I will wake up after 3-4 hours, being awake all night and totally tired the whole day. I tried for years and always came to that point after some time. Now I just accepted my natural sleeping rhythm and am happy with it.

I really liked this video and I agree with a lot of points (espacially the one with the shifted sleep rythm of teenagers), however there is one thing I have to mention: There is the hormone “Melatonin“ which almost exclusively gets produced between 10PM and 2AM. If you sleep during that time, your sleep quality is significantly better than if you dont sleep during that time (If you want a more detailed explanation, search up “what I have learned sleep“ on KZbin, that guy made a very good video on the topic). This means that sleeping from 10PM to 5AM (7 hours) will always be healthier and better than sleeping from 2AM to 9AM, even though its the same amount of sleep (i am pretty sure everyone already had that experience where you wake up very late and you feel completely demolished even though you slept like 8-9 hours). Thus lurks do have an advantage over night owls as their sleep tends to be more “effective“ (better sleep quality) and because of that they have more energy over the day and have to sleep less in total as night owls have to make up for the missing Melatonin. Otherwise very nice video, looking forward to more content =)
@KatarinaS.
@KatarinaS. 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, melatonin as well as human growth hormone which is released during those hours as well. To my understanding, in general, it is healthier to be asleep by 10pm and through the 3am hour for the body to do its repair work and to feel optimal. I have delayed sleep phase, which made me believe my entire life that I was a night owl because I'd "get my second wind", it was just me pushing past my natural sleepiness which was around 8pm (too early when you have homework and things to get done) and not going to bed when I should so then my body would release wakeful hormones, so it's hard for me to get to bed on time, but I feel so much better and am more productive when I go to bed early and wake up early. In order to do this though, I have to do several things religiously during the day or else I won't get sleepy at the right time of night: wake up at my usual early time regardless whether I "need" to or not (optimally 4:30-5am), get plenty of bright light first thing in the morning, get plenty of exercise early in the day, avoid caffeine after noon, eat a light meal in the evening, dim the lights by mid evening and start my bedtime prep and hygiene (wash face, brush teeth, make a to do list and get things ready for next day, etc) at least an hour before my early bedtime (optimally 9:30-10). This routine helps my body to stay on track but it's not always easy to follow all of the steps everyday and things go awry, so I do my best.

Especially not about a topic they probably don't encounter very often. They are only human afterall. Doctors should be consulted for advice, but you should never expect a full solution to a problem (they are often treating symptoms and not the root cause of a problem). It's important to do your own research and come to your own conclusions as well :)

@@BetterThanYesterday Thanks for the response! I'm trying to find more data on it but there isn't much on how genes might affect your response to cues like sunlight. I'm personally too a big advocate of working on timings which are best for you and I do feel it has not impacted my productivity or sleep quality. Hope to see more research on this topic soon :)

They don't teach this sort of thing in medical school. Doctors want to neatly put everyone in the same box, it's easier for them to do that than to treat people as unique individuals. You won't get individualized treatment from a conventional doctor, for that you need to see a holistic or functional medicine doc, or do your own research and be your own doctor and advocate.

I started tracking my sleep with Apple Watch and a sleep app, and found that I was getting most of my REM sleep after 4am. No wonder I was so groggy when I tried to get up early. It is an absolute myth that getting up at 5am is good for everyone. It depends on your unique sleep cycle. Those of us who can’t need to focus instead on how to be more productive later at night.

one point missed here: most people dont do anything productive after 9pm, so shifting your sleep schedule a few hourse earlier, might convert these late hours into productive hours.

I love your stuff! Some more than others, but it’s well done. I’d love to see some some political/social/economic debate between two or more characters such as socialism, capitalism, communism with a devils advocate causing trouble. Or the GND v the Republican talking points. Or the Koch corp. or the Amazon animals vs loggers, cattle ranchers. Etc. It could be funny. You could be a new John Stewart!

I was never an "early riser" ...as a matter of fact I was a "night owl" for good 20 years of my life - this changed once I made myself change! It is the same with being fat and lazy (those can be changed too). Instead of going to bed 1am, now I do 8.30pm...instad of just winging it, now I have my whole day planned to miniscule detail (I always dreaded this reality - only to realize that having complete control over your activities and habbits is the only way to freedom...otherwise you're a slave to your body/feelings and lesser desires). If you're not in charge and behind the wheel, it is your body and you act on the impulses and thoughts generated spontaniously by the animal your mind occupies. You and your body might have completely opposing ideas of what is good for you (generally the case). So, if you want to be a night owl and lose out on health maintaining hormones,develop chronic disease ...sure, keep telling yourself you're a night owl. Otherwise just shut that voice and start getting up 4am (there's a milion great books on what habbits to adopt, behaviours,mind hygiene,excercise,nutrition, etc etc). Sure it takes time and effort (but you only have one life, and if you don't think it is worth it...if you don't think that you are worth it then why even keeping it going,right? So get your self together and start working on becoming a better version of yourself - the best version of yourself that you can be) Or don't, it's your life...just don't expect sympathies if you chose not to.

Midnight- middle of the night. Some were night owls due to the need to have watch over our social group some 100 thousand years ago. People often sleep more than 8 hours a night which is bad for our health, we’re just lazy failing to realise how finite our existence is.

My housemate & I are a perfect example of these differences. I actually felt better when I changed my sleep/wake times from 9p/5a to 8p/4a. I’m certainly a perfectly productive individual, but not above average in any way. My housemate is an artist and a night owl. Her sleep/wake times are more like 2a/10a. I have never known a more productive person in my life. “Relaxing” is anathema to her. She is always working on something. I’m a lazy slob by comparison, but there definitely tends to be a perception in society that favors people like me as the productive, hardworking types. It’s total bs.

With children going to school and work starting around 9am, night owls face difficulty managing their time during the day. Regular meditation have the potential to cut down on the total time needed for sleep.

As a Marine, I had to typically wake up at boot camp at 4 AM if not earlier (for certain training events). Now I can basically wake up whenever I want as long as I'm not late for PT or work. I will say this, this video is right to an extent. Some people just aren't meant to wake up early. However, if you are someone who can wake up early you can receive great benefits from it. In the morning (in my opinion) you have more of a "jump" to get things done compared to later on in the day when you become more tired. Yes it sucks waking up at first but once you finally get on your feet you're good to go. And yes, waking up early can even be more proficient because you're getting things done when no one else is awake so places might not be as packed compared to later in the day. When I was training to go to boot camp I would sometimes wake up very early in the morning and drive myself 25 minutes to the Gym. That way I could get it done in the morning and I could relax and recover from my workouts the rest of the day instead of having to worry about it later. But overall, people should just find a sleep schedule they are comfortable with in order to get a good sleep and stay healthy. Just my two cents.

I am a night owl, or nocturnal. I always have been and I don't know why. 6:50 That's the video's nugget. You don't get graded on which hours you worked on a project, or how much you did. You are graded on the outcome.

You can really tell what someone’s sleep schedule is when they retire. They either wake up early or sleep in, but the point is, they get sleep. When you are retired you can perfectly fit into your own sleep pattern. I’m 55 so maybe in 40 years or so, I can too.
