My wife and I bought a GR because we needed a second daily driver to go with the Fiesta ST we had already. After driving Golf Rs, Type Rs, GR86s, Elantra Ns, and most of the other competitors this was the only car that felt even remotely similar in low-speed daily commute engagement and fun. It has much better inputs, which is a big plus, and the engine is a much more charismatic animal than the Fiesta's, but we love them both for the manic-ness in regular driving conditions.

Bought my 08' Mazda 3 mtx in 2011 and I still love it to death. So I've been a little on the fence if it's the right thing for me. But I absolutely love how the car looks. I love everything that Toyota has done to it. The Civic Type R is the next closest rival. But I like hatchbacks. I think I'm going to love driving it. Many thanks for this video, I learned so much, +1 subscriber! I purchased this exact car, GRC Circuit Ice Cap White last year and it is awesome. I was on a wait list for 16 months at a no-mark up dealer (shout out to Landers Toyota, Rogers, AR), and was really after a Core with performance pack, but you get what you can when dealers get so few allocations. Coming from a VW GTI, I preferred the Core's sleeper look but I have grown use to the more aggressive look of the Circuit and now find it cool and another attribute of my never ending midlife crisis. This is my daily car and it definitely does the job, indeed after a long day at work it is a bit of a tonic to drive this car home. I love the sound of the engine and the waste gate, the steering is awesome, best stoppers I have ever had, and the transmission is way smoother than my old FRS. The mix between digital UI and physical buttons/knobs is just about right. Those folks who complain about no center arm rest confuse me since I want both hands on the wheel when driving such a visceral car. Negatives, the seats while comfortable get very very hot in the summer (use a bead seat cover!), the clutch took getting use to (heavier than what I have had before), and my OCD has been crushed by the the white rocker panels magnetic 🧲 brake dust collecting capabilities (trying a new Griot's ceramic wax!). The brake dust though has become a badge of honor. Did not know about the trick clutch plate, wonder how you know when to replace? All in all, this is a great, fun car ownership and well worth the wait.

Good review but missed a few points, the rear differential is geared to spin 5% faster than the front, that's how they vary the torque split to be greater than 50/50 to the rear. What you called a brake vent intake on the front sides is actually an aero fence intake for the front wheel wells (and are actually blocked off on the Circuit Edition because of high speed stability issues they cause combined with the CE wing), the brake vent intake is behind the main grill.

I don't know if you recall, but a month ago I told you I had bought a 2012 Camry hybrid, it had been smashed and repaired for $19,000, and then a month later it was barely running, it went to the dealer for $7000 hybrid battery estimate, and then it wasn't running at all. Only 105,000 miles. So I bought it from my friend cheap, and I had a transported to Pine Hollow auto in State College Pennsylvania. And he diagnosed a bad module connector, melted wires, also 2 bad batteries in the 17 pack hybrid battery module. And as well there's water in the trunk, they estimated for a rear trunk gasket, which the gasket is perfect, it's probably the tail lamp gaskets are leaking, from a small Fender Bender a year earlier. So we'll see what happens for $1500 versus $7000 from stealership dealership vs Pine Hollow Auto. your video is very technical detail about the car. The car is very special because it so simple that you can DIY yourself.

After 15 years of reliable service, my 2008 Volkswagen GTI has reached that point where repairs will cost more than the car is worth. I have traded it in on a 2023 Toyota Camry and want to take care of this new car. I barely have 35 miles on it as of this post.

I still drive my Passat 2003 tdi 130hp. Best they ever made... but... I'm looking...I'm looking at Toyota. Idk, they seem extremely complicated. This one is manual, simple cooling, simple turbo, simple magnetic drive shaft... idk... it's so good. 3 cylinder??? Ufffffff. Camry ohhh looks gooooooood!!! Take care of it!!! My Passerati is 20 years and its like brand new. Interior, color, no rust, suspension never touched... turbo nothing, manual nothing, no codes. I'm not so sure about modern vw. Plastic...everything is plastic...in engine, around engine, below engine, above engine. Camry...oh good!!!

With good maintenance intervals like keeping up with oil changes using good-quality synthetic oils like Amsoil or Motul at every 5k miles for peace and mind, using Top-Tier grade fuels with a good amount of additives or detergent agents, letting the turbo cool off while leaving the engine idle for at least two minutes after hard spirited drive before turning off and of course overall driving habits. I reckoned that the GR Corolla can easily get past to 300-500K Miles mark or beyond that on the original engine, turbo, transmission and differential without any issues being that it is a Toyota which is well known for its top quality afterall. The only main concern I heard from owners of the GR Yaris/Corolla being the AWD system overheated because of hard track useage or the hot exhaust being so close to it. But other than that, just like any cars these days whether it'd be Turbo or N/A, good maintenance is key people! I trust the engineers in the Motomachi Plant in Japan putting a lot of efforts and quality into their line-ups to meet up its expectations on their quality control.
@mplslawnguy3389 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's high quality, but there's just no way these will last that long.
@ProjectSun91 Жыл бұрын
@@mplslawnguy3389Only time will tell, 500K miles on the original turbo and engine maybe stretching too thin on a 3-cylinder I'll admit, but at least around 300K miles is a possibility. There is a 2001 VW Jetta that manages to make at 500K milestone on the original engine and turbo still intact with just basic maintenance (synthetic oil change at every 5k miles)and mostly highway driven which plays another big factor for engine longevity. Suffice to say, the GR Corolla in mostly stock setup right out of the factory with a good owner in a similar mannercould pull it off.

@@ProjectSun91 These were not made to drive on the highway doing the speed limit. What a waste if someone buys one of these and just cruises down the highway to work and back. It's meant to be driven hard.

@@mplslawnguy3389 Depends on how you look at it, I'd say it's good for both worlds. One where you really need to use it for your daily needs without sacrificing much of the feel of driver engagement and without getting into too much trouble especially if it's still meant to be driven technically, just not hard on the occasion that's all. And the other of course the fun stuff for hard-spirited drive on twisty roads and track usage when needed during weekends. Again, basic maintenance takes top priority. Personally, I really don't see anything wrong here in my book as there are plenty of daily-driven high mileage sports cars out there like the Miatas or S2000s having 300K-500K miles on it. Why wouldn't you want to take good care of it for as long as possible until you feel like trading in while still keeping its values?
@mplslawnguy3389 Жыл бұрын
@@ProjectSun91 Yes, take care of any car you have, I don't care if it's a beater, might as well make them last as long as possible. I'm a little skeptical of the long term on these given their specs, but time will tell.

In regards to the self-adjusting pressure plate, what an ingenious idea! If it was designed to self-adjust only to the extent of the thickness of the clutch friction material, it may allow slippage before the clutch wears down to the rivets, preventing contact with the flywheel.

I would guess the biggest reason they kept mechanic parking brake is because of its use as a rally car, and then potentially equally in terms of reasoning, perhaps because it's a manual transmission.

I've noticed that newer corolla hatches have electronic parking brakes even with manual transmissions, I believe just the higher trim. I've only worked on one though

I've seen on the GR Yaris, pulling the parking brake when driving disengages the drive to the rear axle to make handbrake turns easier, I would assume they kept the same function on the GR Corolla.

I recently started looking these cars and this video has definitely sold me on one. I test drove one today and fell in love with it. Darn near traded my 6mt Tacoma for it. The engine stuff you discussed makes me feel more confident. I do find the “can’t have brake hold on a manual can you?” Comment funny. I think it’s dumb when autos have them. Almost no point in it. Typically in manuals you will hear them as hill hold assist. Holds the rear brakes while you transition from the brake pedal to the throttle so you don’t roll back. To me it makes the most sense for manuals to have them. Granted it’s something I want to be able to toggle on and off. I don’t like it but my wife would want it. I’d like to have the option for it. The auto adjusting clutch makes me think of the AMTs in semis (automated manual transmission). They’re air actuated clutches and electronically shifted manual transmissions and they usually all have automatically adjusting clutches. This car is pretty much everything I want in a car. Manual only, hatchback, AWD, and Toyota reliability. This will be my next vehicle for sure. I had a 2017 WRX previously and I miss that car dearly. Sorta wish I never got out of it. I hear a lot of complaints that the GR Corolla has no arm rest in the center. The one in the VA WRX is super low and useless so it doesn’t bother me. I’ll just miss the storage but that’s about it

My preference would be that Toyota would spend money designing the Corolla to be AMAZINGLY more RELIABLE, instead of all that extra fancy stuff.

Brilliant video, so much information. Self adjusting clutches have been common with some manufacturers for some time now, my 2014 SEAT Leon (Golf) has one. I'm surprised Toyota hasn't been using them up until this car.
