A Master Diagnostic Technician Reviews the current generation Lexus LS500. Answers the most important question. Is this generation as good as the original?
So Should you buy a Lexus LS? We'll take a full tour of the Lexus LS today on a quest to see if the current generation lives up to the legend that is the Lexus LS400.
First we'll start with a drivetrain overview. Then we'll dive into a more consumer focused review of the Exterior and Interior of the LS500.
I've spent sometime driving this 2021 Lexus LS500 as a consumer to get a feel of the car to give you an honest opinon of it. While I liked a lot of things that it had to offer, There are some things that were not very good. I share some of those things in this video.
And one important thing I will share towards the end of the review is the reputation that seems to follow this generation LS of unreliability. That is simply unfounded and not true. The truth be told which is this generation LS is as reliable as the previous generations. Other factors might be the reason you decide not to buy one but from my experience working exclusively on Toyota\Lexus products I don't think the alleged unreliability of the Lexus LS500 should be a reason not to buy one.

I do and it may be one of the best ever produced by any brand. I have owned an S-Class Mercedes, an Audi V8, and many BMWs; my good old 430 -- which for heaven's sake is 18 years old now -- bests them all. The ride, the precise but elegant road manners, the distant but firm sound of a naturally aspirated V8, and the bombproof reliability ... I just don't see how the LS430 can be beat.

Mercedes does depreciate like a rock...just like every other luxury brand. A (any) car is a depreciating asset, not an investment. If you can't afford the depreciation, you can't afford a Mercedes (or any luxury car). That is to say, if you can afford a Mercedes, you can afford the depreciation. The only Lexus I ever considered to be a true competitor to Mercedes was the LS600hL. Unfortunately, we didn't have a dealership in Central NY so it was not an option for me at the time it was available. Since then, Lexus went downhill (competitively). I did get an RX350L a couple years ago. While it was OK, I didn't find it particularly noteworthy.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 2 жыл бұрын
@@samshare2146 I can afford to drive anything on the planet. I don't own any German brand because they depreciate very rapidly for good reasons. Most of those are related to their high frequency of repair rates. Frequent failures are very annoying and time-consuming. Why? Poor engineering, deficient quality control, weak components, etc. They malfunction for valid reasons. Life's too short for that nonsense.

I have now 158K miles, same service technician, same dealership, still looks like in the first day! I still have the same grin on my face any time I choose to drive this car. Amazing quality, look, luxury, power...all is still PERFECT! Will never sell it...!!! Mercedes S Klasse = car for people not very smart that mainly want to impress. Soon will realize it is a money pit and within 12-14 months will dispose of it! BMW 7 Series = car for very obnoxious individuals that drive idiotic, and believe there are no laws on the street that they have to obey. They all have very poor character and vane personality. This too is disposed off very soon after the purchase. Lexus - LS = car for rich people that are smart too and want not only luxury, power, elegance, prestige - but also QUALITY, RELIABILITY, DEPENDABILITY and DECENT PRICE! And believe me: In Europe I owned Mercedes and BMW and Audi and know what I say. Since in US...many years...I stuck to Lexus. The only European pony in my stable: Porsche!

I own a modified 460L and have been bless due to its reliability. I have the executive seating package with out the air suspension. Being an enthusisist... I changed out the suspension myself using coilovers. I heard the LS460 was plagued with front control arm issues (8), Brake actuators /abs issues, and the pesky air suspension nightmare. I have been blessed not not experience a lot of these problems and have changed out many suspension parts myself saving me some money. My car has 124k, and bought it used at 92k 6 years ago. I love this car... I'm now looking to buy another big sedan, but heard all the negative reviews on the 2018 LS500 models. I'm unsure if the negative complaints were just in the 18 year or others. Many say the turbo lag "pause before go" issue was down right unsafe. Others say the runflats were a nightmare... but easy fix. Agreed, everyones grip is with the entotainment, and lets not talk about the lack of V8 in the 500. I believe this will make the Lexus V8 cars sort after, and collectors items in the near future, as everyone goes Eco. Question... Why would Toyota use a plastic transmission oil pans? this sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen due to the height of the car. Here in NY we have a lot of speed bumps that tend to rub the undercarriage of the car. Also heat.... Question... What's your take on the V35A-FTS (22 Tundra, Ls500 motor) Waste gate failure. Im hearing....this is a common problem with this motor. I hear the 22 Tundra owners are livid due to supply chain issues and having to wait 30 days for parts for a brand new Toyota truck. After doing more research the Ls500 reliability listing on Consumer Reports is pretty dismal. www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-5th-gen-2018-present/960349-2018-ls500-on-2nd-blown-motor.html After hearing all the grips I was on the fence with the LS, and was looking at the 2018 Genesis G90 (which I heard a lot of good things about). I was also looking out of the segment at the LX570, and the RC-F. Thanks for your information and help over the years.

I bought a 2004 Lexus LS 430 one year ago, it had 84,000 Miles on it and plan to drive it until it it falls apart. I can tell you it’s the best vehicle I ever drove. It’s in perfect condition, the drive is so smooth and quiet, love the wood in it and everything on it works. Those years were the best Lexus cars and trucks were made.

Please do a video comparing the 3.5 liter twin turbo v6 engine in the 2022 tundra vs the outgoing 5.7 liter v8. Will it be reliable and what issues can we look out for with the turbos and intercooler? I bet you have some experience with the 3.5 liter twin turbo engine since it's been available in the Lexus ls500 for some years now. Thanks.

What a gorgeous LUXURY vehicle. If I was at an economic status where I could afford one, it would be my choice over a Rolls Royce. Yes I am serious. Understated elegance! I think controls, gauges, etc., are simple is because this vehicle caters to an "older" generation that likes ease of use and simplicity like I do. If there is a better and more beautiful sedan in the world, I don't know where it would be?

Unlike a RR Phantom you can actually park the LS. You don't have to worry about some eco warrior/financial incel/vandal taking their rage out on your care. You are not marked by criminals [in these parts they will put a tracker on your car and then go to your home to take your car... and I assume with an RR probably break in your home. You also don't feel like a mook paying 10 times plus for basic servicing. Also you get lexus reliability not RR biodegradability. Except for me, the ES 350. Similar or in some peoples opinion better ride quality and 10 inches less length.

I have had a 1998 LS 400, (my favorite), 2004 GS 300, and my current car a 2006 LS 430. My wife currently drives a 2015 GS 350. I am holding back on the LS 500 for two reasons: when I set in the LS 500 I feel cramped. Not what I want in a car. It is smaller inside than my 430. The second deal breaker is no full sized spare tire. I do a lot of long distance driving and I am unwilling to risk being without a full sized spare driving, for example, I-70 from Richfield, Utah to Grand Junction, Colorado or I-10 San Antonio to El Paso Texas at night. Aside from the fact that Lexus no longer provide updates for the GPS maps I consider my LS 430 superior to the 500.

I have to agree on the roominess of the LS430 compared to the 500. I feel boxed in when sitting in the 500. Aside from saving tens of thousands, the ride of the LS430 (and now simplicity compared to modern day LS models) cannot be beat. Love my '04 430!

A '98 LS400 has been my daily driver for 22 yrs. It's a favorite of mine, too. Years ago a friend brought over his new Bentley Continental, a beautiful car. But the LS was clearly superior in ergonomics, suspension, steering, braking and a few other things. It was obvious that there were factory defects that the dealer had ignored. After a year or so, the new owner gave up trying to keep the thing on the road and sold it to the first potential buyer who came to see it. What did he buy after that? It was an LS.

To be honest, I used to believed all those consumer reports from a so called “well-respected, expert car journalists” thinking they are the ones to be trusted and have car manufacturers to follow their desires until I almost owned an early 2000 BMW 3 series that were very favorable to those people but found out later they were plagued with transmission problems like no reverse (most common), slipping gears, etc. I ended up getting a Tacoma quad-cab, instead.
