The really smart thing to do with the x99 boards back in the day was buy cheap Xeon e5 1600 series cpus, as they had similar specs to the i7s, cheaper, and were actually overclockable. However when broadwell E came out, intel removed the ability to overclock e5 1600 cpus

I just recently built 2 systems using these processors, and found they have no issues running current games at well over 100fps@1440p full graphics with a 4070ti. You are not going to experience any issues unless you bottleneck the CPU. I do not recommend anything higher than a 4070ti, as I found slight bottle necks with the 4080 and 4090 cards, where the GPU usage was considerably lower and CPU usage much higher. Best to go x299 with 4080 or 4090 cards.

I guess the more PCIe lanes are more targeted at workstation use with multi-GPU, where PCIe lanes could become a bottleneck. I'm currently looking for an affordable system for GPU fluid simulations, and that needs ideally 4 GPUs with PCIe x16. X99 has only PLX splitters, so PCIe bandwidth is still limited, but the 40 lane CPUs could make a difference over 28 lane CPU there.

I've just recently had upgraded an old x99 motherboard with a 16 core Xeon E5-2698V3 for productivity tasks. Performance is pretty solid even for today's standards, but the argument you mentioned for overall platform costs is absolutely valid. I wouldn't build such a system from scratch anymore since motherboards are overpriced.

Good video. The problem with this gen of CPU's is the need for a 2011 socket , which often entails added expenditure for an obsolete chipset. Only really worth it if you have a motherboard already.

I bought this chip recently for a around $18 USD shipped. Normally I would get the i7-5960x for an x99 board, but I had a chinese model with very limited OC potential so I figured this was the best option. It looks like it has the highest base clock of the Haswell-E chips, i might be wrong though. This was being paired with a GTX 1070 so it probably will be GPU bottlenecked anyway

I upgraded from a Core i7-4700MQ (45 watt, same perfomance as a desktop i7-3770) Haswell laptop chip to an Alder Lake i7-12700K. Both PCs are music production machines, literally i waited a decade for double the single core perfomance which is the biggest bottleneck there. Big-Little on x86 is a massive game changer for me, ridiculously low iddle wattage, cool and silent desktop PC.

The only use I would have for a HEDT platform would be to use the extra PCIe lanes for adding in extra NVMe storage as a RAID set-up, so far that hasn't been viable enough (cough cheap enough cough) to tempt me but who knows? Maybe down the line it could be a different story.

With some bios modding you can do this on the x99 platform with a 16x PCIE to 4x nvme card. Later HEDT platforms natively support bifurcation (lane splitting) and dont require such modifications. I've got a couple of old x99 systems one running proxmox running home assistant, pihole and nginx, with another being a windows based system for my plex and BlueIris installs. Shop around and you can pickup a 5960x with motherboard for cheaper than you might have thought.

Something like the E5 2680 v3 is 12C/24T with massive cache. Goes for about 30-40 bucks. If you unlock the all core frequency, disable HT,, drop memory timings (on 2133) to CL12 and enable IOAT and Cluster On Die in the BIOS, I'm willing to bet whether you see better FPS than with the 5830k depends entirely on the game you're checking out. DX12 and Vulkan especially now scale really well with multi core CPUs.

I had the 5820k and 2x 1070s in sli, I had a problem with the Asus x99 Deluxe board killing my 5820k, I got it replaced and Asus "Fixed" my board they said, It killed 2 more 5820k's Asus said there was nothing wrong with my board and sent it back, So I bought a 5960x and a EVGA x99 board, They even performed the same for the most part with SLI 1070s, that system is still in use today at 4.6ghz, I did keep the Asus x99 board, I bought some cheap Xeon CPU to throw in it just to see if it would do ok with locked low powered CPU, the CPU lasted 2 months and it killed it, used the board for Target practice and vowed to never use a Asus board again with how they treated the situation.

I would be very very curious to see a Xeon E5 1680 V2 in your lineup, as this is the previous generation to Haswell direct competitor to the 5960X and is a bit more of a unique scenario. I just bought one for $80 AUD, it is placed in a EVGA X79 Dark mobo, at 4.5Ghz 1.34v across all 16 threads, DDR3 2400Mhz CL10 and a oc'd + UV'd RX 6900XT.

The 5930K was a pretty good CPU for me. 4.7GHz all core I got it up to. That is the fun thing about these older CPUs, they actually have overclocking headroom in them unlike a lot of modern CPUs. I did end up upgrading though to an I9 7940X though which I got for $200. It has an interesting value proposition especially considering that LGA 2066 boards are surprisingly not too expensive. I paid $150 for mine which is a pretty reasonable price I would say.

In 2021 I snagged a $280 6950x to replace the 5930k I'd been running since November 2016. Also had to purchase new ram (4 sticks of 16GB 3200 DDR4) as overclocking attempt with the 6950x burnt out an 8 GB stick of Dominator 2666. I cannot part with the 5930k, is still a very efficient and powerful 6 core CPU. Was always able to sustain 4.6 Ghz for gaming sessions, with it and the MSI Titanium motherboard it sat within. 6 cores at 4.6Ghz, cooled with a Corsair 280mm AIO. Excellent CPU for almost 5 years.

I`ve bought used RTX 3080 12 G about 2 months ago and i`m using it with i7 5820k running 4.5 GHz with 3000 DDR4 in 4x-way, and even under 4.8 GHz on cores + 3.6 Ring Ratio + 3200 on memory it still bottlenecks even weaker GPU. Without V/sync and any FPS locks it can hardly utilize GPU over 85% in CPU-bound scenes (for example, i need to set "crowd density" to "low" in CP2077 if i wanna get stable 60 fps with v/sync and even after that i`m still getting FPS drops from 75-60 to 45-50 when GPU utilization is only 80-85%, which means i can get stable 60 with newer CPU). But here is -one- two tricks you can use on 4000 series RTX: n-vidia latex + frame -de- generation. This will help. Coz even on 45 fps with NV latex "on" i`m feeling game like it runs almost 60 (but i`m... still swithching in "off" to get real 60, LMAO))) But with FG "on" on 4070+ you will always get above 60 fps.

I am still running X99 with SLI 1080s. I bought a 5930k initially before upgrading later to a 6850k. The 5930k I had did not play well with a high overclock + high (for the time) DDR4 overclock, the later gen CPU handled it much better. Having 32 lanes for SLI is actually really critical as it impacts SLI's scaling quite significantly. I can get 90-95%+ scaling still on this setup with the native 16x/16x with literally no stutter or other SLI problems, but I play by all of SLI's many rules to make that happen. In 8x/8x it would not be scaling much past 50-60% tops. The entirety of x99 is really just not worth it overall, its the last extreme CPU I will be buying for sure. The main gripe is that because the CPUs are so niche windows thinks they are a normal Xeon and likes injecting different microcode and disabling the overclock on them. I have had my OC on the chip disabled by microsoft 2-3x over the years for this reason for months on end. If you want hardware that just works and won't have a bunch of problems you just want to go with the most mainstream thing possible as it will have the most use, the most user testing and the most company support for bug fixes.

I think that issue is down to Intel poorly coding the CPU to report the proper name, or microsoft bungling things up. Exterme Edition parts can still be great value for a system with lots of PCIe add-in cards for SATA drives, NVMe expansion, multi-GPU setups not necessarily for SLI/CF, but also for PCIe passthrough for VMs or a render box for blender, or media serving tasks. So I wouldn't disregard them entirely. Personally, I would love to see a return of reasonably-priced HEDT CPUs akin to first generation Threadripper and some X99/X299 CPUs. Obviously the core count would stay similar to consumer systems, but even without later upgrades to a 24, 32, or 64 core CPU, the PCIe lanes and memory bandwidth on consumer systems are incredibly limiting for a workstation or server-esque workload. And when even the 12-core Threadripper Pro has an unnecessary number of PCIe lanes (7 slots assumes every expansion card is single-slot, which is hardly the case) and is priced at over $1000, it's really a turn-off for the kind of workloads I would like to run. It doesn't help that hardly any AM5 boards include both x8/x8 slots and multiple x4 slots from the chipset.

Just built a rig, 6700k locked at 5 ghz paired with a GTX 1080ti and 16 gb ram, all for my wonderful nephew. It runs everything without any stutter at 1080p 60 fps with a single exception, TW: Warhammer demanded some options to be lowered, still looked good. My nephew doesn´t know anything about hardware and never messes with settings, he should be good for a couple of years. A lot of people don´t realize that you can actually get a decent rig for at a very low cost if you are willing to purchase some older CPUs, a bottleneck here and there isn´t the end of the world if the games don´t stutter..... and I am not the one paying his electricity bill 😀

For Fortnite, set the texture cache to unlimited in the drivers then run around the board. Spin around in spot from dip to dip to allow all textures to cache. This speeds the game up incredibly. I do understand it should not take user intervention to work well, however it does.

Fortnite is terribly optimized and you basically need a 40 series card to run it with ray tracing. Just throwing that out there so you dont waste yout money on an i7

If you wanted to run SLI...which I did, and that's why I bought the 5930K...I still have two Geforce 980s in SLI that have never given me anything but perfect performance. I believe that the reason everyone complains that SLI and Crossfire wasn't "that great" was because they were trying to use it on CPUs and motherboards that simply didn't properly support it at the x16 standard. The X99 Gigabyte UD3P that I have could do quad SLI, not at x16 across the board, obviously, but dual SLI at x16 uses up 32 of my 40 PCIe lanes with enough left over for a m.2 hard drive and one more m.2 device. Your video is literally perpetuating the idea that people don't understand the importance of PCIe lanes and the CPUs that run them.

^ 10000% this. People are dumb and failed to understand SLI needs the full bandwidth. A single card wont use it but SLI uses the bandwidth for cross talk in addition to the bridge. If you don't have PCI-E bandwidth your scaling goes out the window which is why everyone believes SLI only scales to about 150% on 2 cards. *rolls eyes* Been using x99 with 1080 SLI the last 7 years with absolutely 0 problems and 90-95%+ scaling. SLI was ultimately killed by the stupidity of its userbase.

I still enjoy mu E5-2660V3 on a chinise x99 motherboard which for both i paid 70€ total. It came with the Turbo bios unlock to force the cpu to go all core on the single boost ( by default alk core is 2.9-3ghz, with unlock 3.3 ghz all core)

Did you ever get fast boot to work on your X99 system? I have an Asus TUF X99 and fast boot never worked along with the USB diagnostic thing. If I enabled fastboot, it would boot into Windows normally. Then once you shutdown the system and upon the next reboot it would hang loading up. Now, that could be due to CSM being enabled (or I thought so) on my HD7970s not having an UEFI firmware for them. But I later gave that system to my brother and put a GTX 1080 in it. I tried fastboot again, and again it failed. But, here's something strange. I have the previous generation Asus TUF X79 system with a 3930K. I put the HD7970s back in there but I guess had trouble loading the proper Intel RAID driver. There's a consumer and a an enterprise version. Anyways, I mucked about and found you can just set which one you want in the BIOS and set it to enterprise so I can run my two Cherryville SSDs in RAID-0. Fastboot now works on the X79 system. It only took 10 years to get it working... My take away into the HEDT land for that time is, a lot of money spent on platforms that got abandoned way too soon or features promised that never came to work. At the time, I'm grateful for all the IO on the system, the features, the core count and they gamed pretty well, but the segmentation on X99 was pretty gross hence why I had to get a 5930K. Now I just run an older Ryzen 5800X3D. It's mainstream, supported and I don't really need more than 8 cores. I was dismayed by the TUF motherboard and it's lack of USB though. I guess between X99 and when I built this Ryzen system, they relegated TUF to basically entry level. Kind of news to me since that used to be the top end or near it at least in features. But solved with a USB add in slot so not too big of a deal, but caught me off card once I started plugging in my flight controllers and such. I looked at Threadripper when it came out and it's pretty much abandon-ware now, so same deal. I thought about upgrading the x99 system but I only had one option and for some reason they are priced liked gold and with the fastboot not working and I'd have to really overclock the heck out of it, I just wanted a nice stable system, that was easy on power and heat so I built a new one a year ago or so.

Great video but the Ryzen 5 4500/5500 have a lot less cache and are limited to pcie 3.0 meaning they have less storage options and perform a good bit worse than the r5 5600/5600x that you showed today and may be slower than the 5960x

My 6850K (Broadwell-E) will reach the Windows desktop at 4.4 GHz with 32GB of DDR4 at 3200/16, but for sanity I've been it at 4.0GHz withe RAM at 3000/17 all cores for years.

Considering you do budget videos, have you considered a look at SSD vs HDD? Cause while SSD are getting cheaper the storage size is much smaller at the same prices for HDD. I personally use HDD for my PCs but I mainly play older games so I don't notice too many problems

Interesting video Iceberg, (Redacted and corrected thought response) I believed the i7 5820 to be a more affordable and decent performing entry offering. But not thrilled about intel when it tends to cripple the amount of PCI-E lanes with the base chip offerings. (surprised to see it perform about the same or sometimes better than the higher end) my opinion back then, When this came out was... A supposed future upgrade path to higher skews, But a possible Intel Switcher roo when something new came along. With the desktop parts giving most of... for less, These higher priced specialized CPU's didn't appeal to me for gaming and kind of a waste of money for most at that time. One other concern that came up for me was the worry of a New Mother board if and when Broadwell E came in the future? (obviously didn't happen) I just remembered when early Haswell 4770k to be finicky with heat and on die power circuits limiting over clocks. And the Z87 to Z97 board upgrade to fully utilize skull trial. These older X99 chips have much better used pricing now, But sadly moved on a long while ago. It was only useless if you wanted sli, for most people with a single card and a nvme drive 20 was more than enough, especially people like me that ran an itx setup.

It was actually way better price per performance along with longevity going x99 in 2014 for only 100-150 more. I upgraded from 5820k only when cyberpunk came out for a 5960x for 50 bucks and it still runs great in modern games unlike intels 4 core platforms

@@jamesdoe7605 Useless was way too strong of a word for this processor. (i realize that now) Being a 6 core entry on a budget was economical and palatable with X99 entry tax. Having that more robust platform with greater memory channels and feature sets afforded less limitations and better future upgrades. With me jumping on to Sandy and Ivy Bridge desktop platforms was incredible and Haswell for my Laptop was fast and impressive. The high pricing of DDR4 and getting into X99 was too rich for me at that time. I pretty much got mixed up with an older intel CPU/motherboard that did have the same core/thread count as the desktop (4/8) 3850? And thought the company had kinda done the same here. X99 or my Favorite 2011 V3 still looks impressive. Cheers!

@@GrumpyWolfTech Useless was way too strong a word to describe this chip) My condolences since I was thinking of an earlier CPU. (X79) The i7 5820 was a great 6 core CPU to have at that time. I was tempted to jump on to this platform myself but was cautious. I just ended up waiting it out and using desktop consumer my gaming/Lan duties. What enticed me was the M.2/DDR4, etc. really looked future proof and fast. (intel hype) But the price of entry and some earlier on teething issues kept me away a little longer. (Beta tester/early adopter blues) Being what it is today I'm very impressed and would have been very happy today if I had the hind sight and money to build back then.

(my bad) Got this confused with an earlier chip Intel made on X79. If you are still using this CPU today... Good for you.. Longevity and getting you money's worth is all that matters.

10100 should be fine with a 2070S, I use a 2060S with an R5 5500. If you find a CPU bottleneck just put more workload on the GPU and pretty the image up, though outside the odd (cough Ubisoft game cough) poorly optimised game that leverages 6 cores I doubt you'll have a problem. For context the 1080ti was matched to the i7 7700 chips which your i3 is a match for and the 2070S has similar rasterised performance as a 1080ti. If worst comes to worst then just upgrade to a 10600 when you can find a cheap one. Too many people obsess over CPU bandwidth but unless you're doing productivity workloads it just isn't necessary, especially in gaming where the GPU is the generally more critical component.

I think you should got for it, that's a great price for a 2070S. If you're looking at AAA type games you won't notice much of a bottleneck at all, and if you do ever find yourself in need of some higher FPS then a 10400F or 10700F would be a simple drop-in upgrade!

I used to have an i7 6700K (which is also a quad core and gets similar benchmark scores to the 10100F) along with a 2070 Super. I can confirm that I was able to run pretty much any game I threw at it at 1080p60. For more recent games like Modern Warfare 2019 and Halo Infinite, I would have to turn down a couple of graphical settings from the highest option to keep a stable 60 FPS, but I can easily say that you can comfortably run most modern games at least at high settings without any issues. $170 for the 2070 Super is a decent price in my opinion (so long as it's in good condition), plus the warranty helps. Bottleneck might be a slight concern, but since it's an i3, you should be able to install a 10th gen i5 or i7 without much hassle (though you may want to replace the heat sink with something a little better if you're just using the stock one). I think the 11th gen core processors use the same socket as well, so that may be another potential upgrade option in the future.

I have an E5 2650v2, it ran Battlefield 2042 at 80fps with some cpu power to spare (I don't have a very good gpu). Newer games that are well optimized for high thread counts run very well on the Xeons, but their single threaded performance is pretty lackluster. Older games that only use a single core won't run very well. I got mine with the motherboard and ram for less than $100 on AliExpress, so I'd say it was worth it.

@@anthonyk 2667v2 is the best one for OEM X79/C600 systems which don't allow OC or have a TDP limit. But usually older revisions of OEM systems which originally came with a Sandy Bridge-EP CPU don't support Ivy Bridge-EP CPUs. For example I have a Xeon E5-2690 in my ThinkStation S30 Type 0606 because only the newer revisions support Ivy. But if you can get a X99 board and CPU then I'd recommend getting it instead of X79 mainly because of AVX2

Fun fact every Intel processor between the third generation I series, and now the 12th generation have something called drift, it’s called this because It makes windows vista functions slowly break over time And before the 6003 version of vista if you installed Vista on fourth generation it would completely corrupt itself given enough time, Intel put shotty core cuircutry into the fourth GEN and up which caused this to happen

Perfect timing! So glad I clicked made me feel really good! I built the 5820k variant with a 980sc gpu that worked flawlessly until EVGA rattled their nvidia cage, drivers stopped updating correctly to keep alive ive done deep clean roll back etc. “it works” Need new card to run 4K graphics tablet with 5k monitor, that seems to be actual stumbling block, more vram would be nice. Been doing specs on new system, at first gpu upgrade seemed unthinkable. Cool to see, again thank you specifically for including so much about my processor i didnt know. Also saw something recently about x99 bios memory change helping new cards. Know anything abt that? Seems according to this unnecessary

Love your videos. But what is going on with the power consumption of the CPU? Does the whole CPU really just draw 25W under a gaming workload and 36W at Cinebench or is there a bug with the overlay (or just wattage per core)? My E5 2680v2 draws 80-110W at these loads, so I wound immediately upgrade to LGA 2011-3 if these CPUs are this efficient. Greetings from Germany!

Seems to be a bug, I had the same thing with the 5960X. Measured at the wall, the system consumes about 270W during Cinebench and 417W during Spider-Man.

It was not a pointless processor. 40 pcie lanes and the fastest single core of the bunch made for a monster gaming machine at the time with both glue in sli using the full 16 lanes.
