Some of the worst advice I've ever heard given to survivors after narcissistic abuse is that they should forgive and forget. Survivors are often having to adjust to the realisation of multiple betrayals, lies and abuses that they have suffered. They can be dealing with the grief of losing the time, energy and love that they have poured in a relationship with a pathological narcissist. They may be struggling with intense feelings of resentment and anger and fantasies of revenge. Being told to forgive and forget minimises these experiences and can be a reminder of experiences of being made to feel invisible, small and irrelevant by a narcissistic abuser.
In this video I talk about what forgiveness is, why it is not possible without full acknowledgement of the hurts and harms that have been done and how forgiving yourself might be the key to healing after narcissistic abuse.
