The way I describe it to people was my anxiety was like me trying to swim while being drowned by waves. The medication helped me get my head above water to actually start swimming (doing the necessary work in counseling).

@@Titantitan001 yes my goal is to get the necessary strategies and work through what I need to work through in therapy and get off the medication when my therapist and GP considers it appropriate.

@Willham most days yes I'm swimming. I lost my dad at the end of march this year so it's been tough. Some days I just can't do anything. That's OK, on those days I do more of my exercises and do more small thing so I feel accomplished- sometimes that just making my bed. Remember, it rakes 10x longer to get better than it is to fall apart.

Medication won’t “fix” you, but it can be part of the solution, helping to boost your functioning short-term. I would say that, with depression and anxiety, medication by itself is rarely enough. I personally find it helpful in tandem with therapy and trying to be more deliberate in how I live.

I agree, and highly suggest trusting your Psychologist and Psychiatrist. Your psychiatrist isn't going to put you on meds if they don't think you need it or it won't help. Also, pair it with therapy. It helps you SO much. No one ever regrets going to therapy. At one of my most depressed/anxious times in my life, I went to therapy and also got medication. The help and advice I received still help me to this day, and I'm not on meds anymore. If you notice the diet, exercise, journaling, yelling, etc aren't helping, go to a professional. It's not that you're doing something wrong OR that you're not doing ENOUGH (which is what I thought). Sometimes our environment is just too much to handle and we need professional support to get through. Nothing wrong with medication. Do not be ashamed or embarrassed to take medication!

Is it worth it to only go to one session? Therapy is so expensive, but I could probably afford to go to one session. I have just heard that it’s only effective after a few or several treatments.

I'm glad that you qualified your answer to needing meds by repeating 'Usually' twice. I'd never suffered with anxiety until, in my late 60's, my husband of 46 years became quite ill, and I was trying to care for him. Thankfully, I'd already been on an anxiety med for several months before my husband was airlifted to a large hospital because he'd gone into cardiogenic shock. On a ventilator, slow dialysis, a heart pump. Me being counseled by a hospice nurse and the chaplain. I was asked to make crucial decisions for my husband. I am thankful that I was on that med. It helped keep me from falling apart and allowed me to make logical decisions on his behalf. Although cardiogenic shock comes with a 90% mortality rate, he survived and came home. The stress was quite bad. Sadly, he died from heart failure 8 weeks later. That was 3 years ago. I no longer need the medication, but I most certainly did during that time. It helped me be a good advocate for my spouse.

I have anxiety over doctors now. 12 years ago I told my doctor that I had no energy, my heart pounds out my chest and I get pains, I started having sezuires, my doctor said it must be depressed and anxiety. I took the meds and only got worse and worse they changed them , worse and I moved out of state and for 4 years I went to the new doctor. Sane diagnosis. I actually told my doctors that I was not depressed when I trusted the doctor but I was beginning to give up so I fought harder. Tried so hard to make her believe me that I felt I was dying. More phych meds were her answer. One morning a little over a year ago I woke up and had a major stroke requiring brain s brain surgery and learning to talk ,read, write walk all over again, while in the hospital Cleveland clinic main campus I was sent to. They found something very rare called lambles excressence I had a tumor growing in my aortic valve wich was literally Killing me that caused my heart to race and me to have no energy. By the time this happened, my brain chemistry is so fucked illl never be the same 12 years of phych meds all because doctors are paid to push these drugs. Now this is what's left of me and they still get to practice. True story!😞😓😖😤🤬 I am now 46 years old. I was 44 when this happened to me. Don't believe you're mental when your mind and body know better. These kinds of doctors are mental and dangerous. Facts!!!

There are often times when you have anxiety and take meds and all it does is pause the anxiety effects after a month of using them. It wont get rid of the cause. If you know the cause and change your lifestyle habits while taking the medication for a year or 2 it will work often times. There are different types of reasons why anxiety are caused: serontonin, dopamine, norepinephrine most of the time. When serotonin is low thats why anxiety is there. When dopamine is low, you’re not yourself and are less productive as a human, which will eventually lead to serontonin lowering as well.

Any tips for what to look for when trying to find a counselor?
@Alive_N_freeridin8 ай бұрын
For me it seems just changing ny thoughts doesn't work. I try to change my thoughts but they just dont stick, and the intrusive/negative thoughts constantly win the fight. I just dont know what to do. I used to be functional, but it all caught up with me at age 27 and put the nail in the coffin. Now im stuck in a spot where it's too intense to perform my work, or even perform enough work to afford counseling/therapy. I'm on my last warning at work before i end up at a shelter or on the street which will be even worse for my mental and physical health. I'm guessing medication would be the only solution in this case...? But i hear it takes 4-12 weeks before noticing a difference and about 1-2 weeks of increased anxiety and I dont wanna go through that.
@danaeddins55904 жыл бұрын
Isn’t there a difference between a chemical process and a chemical imbalance. Doesn’t one of those indicate an atypical or ineffective expression/action while one indicates the typical expression/process?
@TheDrJohnDelonyShow4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. Yes - technically speaking, you are correct. The problem is that the idea of imbalance can imply that there is some sort of magic or perfect balance, similar to an oil level in a car. People are not machines - they are highly iterative, co-regulated, fluctuating beings. The challenge is who gets to define "typical" and/or "normal."

Hi. Anxiety medications. Your comments are a bit broad a base. How do the individual meds work? For example the science does not know how ssri and snri works. Neither do the pharma manufacturers or they are not telling. The theory is clear but not conclusive. Maybe you are talking about sedatives which anecdotally, can play a very positive comforting role. So, medications need to be more specifically explained for lay people to understand and make sound decisions from. Right now that’s not the case. Is it because the mental health industry doesn’t know? Is it because they are not being told?
