I have my second model at school and I’m toning with Demi hair color but didn’t know if it be better if I actually took the time to dry the hair but I think I’ll be okay if I towel dry it !! You also have to take into account the composition of the demi you use. Some demis like Wella Color Touch are highly alkaline and some are closer to a neutral ph like Goldwell Colorance. Color Touch tends to be more opaque and they advertise that it will cover gray 70%, but I find I can completely cover gray 100% on levels 7 and below w/ it. They tend to rough up the cuticle a bit, but they cover, and that’s the price you pay for putting something alkaline on your hair. Colorance is more sheer/closer to acidic and they only advertise 50% gray coverage, but it is much gentler on the hair cuticle. I almost always reach for sheer, acid Demi for toning and refreshing ends, bc they close the cuticle. I only use alkaline demis when I need dimensional gray coverage, or when I’m trying to tone difficult underlying pigments like red or orange. Some people say toners never stick on them, and its bc they keep putting cuticle opening Demis on the hair, and after opening and closing that theoretical door/cuticle it won’t want to stay closed anymore and the toner will fade out in a couple washes. Using sheer acid demis don’t last as long but in the long run they aren’t roughing up the cuticle like an alkaline one does and your hair doesn’t feel like a scouring pad from the weakened cuticle and it will continue to hold color. Sorry this was so long; totally geeking out 😅

Yes absolutely Juliette it does take less time tone on towel dried hair It’s just about deciding which one suits your needs best at that moment in time and what difference is it might make if you do a test with your own brand with a couple of cuttings or someone’s hair you will know how they both perform and get a better idea of what you need at that moment in time hope that makes sense best James 👍🏻🖤

The final result on the ends that have been fully dried looks more “damaged, dried out” is because you’re using a semi permanent color that still has a level of peroxide that will damage hair that doesn’t have the water barrier to soften the Ph balance.

I do find that sometimes I’ve taken the toner off way too fast I’ll try and leave toner on longer going forwards. Also its all about the control, in wet (towel dried ) hair the toner will be simply slower and on dry hair the toner will sink quite quick. Towel dried hair always the best choice for time and ease of application specially in the salon.
@TheLifeOfHair
@TheLifeOfHair 3 жыл бұрын
I’m 100% with you on the ease of application part of this comment what I would mention is because of the nature of applying colour to wet hair and the cuticles are already raised due to the increased pH from water he will generally finding the colours take quicker not slower just a thought for you there obviously and your experience may vary depending on the range that you are using but elevating the pH from 4.5 to 5.5 up to 7 the natural pH of most water that come out of the tap Will raise the cuticle and therefore increase the chances of that product sinking deeper into the hair in a shorter space of time hence why in this video the towel dried hair had more town than the dry hair hope that helps all the best James

Also, I wanted to clarify, do all or just some toners have this direct dye in addition to the processed? I used a “generic shades eq” toner on my hair and find it visibly leaving my hair with every shampoo. I did not leave on got the entire process time due to violet I saw very early on. (10 minutes) The direct dye ingredient would explain this.

So you shampoo and condition before drying and toning? I always though the toner would not work on conditioned hair because of thr cuticle being closed with the PH back to its natural stage. We definitely gain time for not drying before toning specially on very thick long hair that would take ages to do. Thanks for this video.
@TheLifeOfHair
@TheLifeOfHair 4 жыл бұрын
Yes Pauline I always try and shampoo and condition before I tone this is to bring the property back down to something more akin to the natural porosity of 4.5 to 5.5 when the hair has been bleached it is very alkaline it stays this way until we had something acidic like shampoo And conditioner if you think about it now if a client walked in off the street you wouldn’t wash her hair before applying colour you would just apply it straight to the head even if they had washed her hair that morning the alkalinity of the colour will open the cuticles the matter whether it’s been conditioned or not yeah anything that might happen is if you do not rinse out the conditioner thoroughly and you are using a very delicate Demi permanent something like Shades EQ It could have an affect but I have never experienced it myself

I've done damp on occasion, but mostly tone on dry....raised eyebrows regarding the result on wet AND your explanation, verrry interesting and unexpected 🤔 I assumed the water would fill up the hair and cause the colour to not be as dark as the result....sort of like wetting it before being in a swimming pool. Yes do you know what that is a very good question and I think from a theoretical standpoint it would work pretty well not something I’ve ever tried but as you would be raising the alkalinity from say 4.5 to 5.5 the natural state of the hair up to a seven which is the natural pH of water the cuticles would be raised that is a very very good point thank you Kelly I will experiment with this idea

No, your hair aborbs some water making the hair swell. It won't absorb as much of the dye. Plus it will go on easier with damp hair

@@TheLifeOfHair I do (process full time) if I use the Joico porosity spray on dry hair. My issue is trying to tone on level with towel dried hair. I only trust my eye when it's about 70% dry or more. A level finder will only help on dry hair. I have a Dyson, so I can blast it dry pretty fast. Then I use a porosity spray for ends and to be full time to give the toner the longest life. My clients pay for my time, so, I do it right and charge accordingly. Wella Color Touch works great and it is recommended to be used on damp hair. It's the only one I've used exclusively on damp hair. I root stretch and color melt on damp hair, though.

I didn't understand, how does water open the porosity?
@TheLifeOfHair
@TheLifeOfHair 2 жыл бұрын
So the reason that the water opens to cuticle is because hair naturally sits around pH 4.5 divide by five however when you make the hair wet it takes up to 7 roughly because the pH of water is seven is open is cuticles hope that explains it for you

They are close TaBetha I will give you that but definitely not exactly the same, and the level was very hard to on camera The differences between the three strands and not dramatic and I didn’t expect them to be however there is tonal shifts between the towel dried and dry and they are on the same level for sure, The section that I squeezed the moisture out of his half to 1/ quarter of a shade darker than the other two is not broken and has less tone than the other 2 giving a slightly warmer end result ✌🏻
