I think 90 percent of people have a misconception on leg drive, most people think it's just to give you momentum to push/throw bar off the chest. It does do that but think of leg drive as something that stabilizes your upper body into the bench when you lift. When you dont you leg drive and stiffen against the bench when you bring the bar towards your chest your back rocks on the bench then you upper body gets loose. When you're lose, you can't push effectively but when you leg drive and have a reasonable weight in your hand your back is very stable.
@BLOEDVLEK
@BLOEDVLEK 5 жыл бұрын
You're right. Its there as a transfer of force only. You don't bench with your legs, but you'll get nothing out of your upper body if they're not switched on. I also like to think of it as a means to reinforce the arch by driving your torso and ribcage up toward your shoulders.

About the tip of Pushing the bar up- backward , I’ve learnt this couple months ago, but I can’t feel like I’m training my chest at all on the top of movement, and the opposite completely when I push up-forward, my chest begins to burn so bad, any comments about this?
@gabem5340
@gabem5340 3 жыл бұрын
well 1 year later... the pushing the bar backwards is a powerlifting technique to make you be able to lift more weight, not to activate chest muscles. so it really just depends on what ur goals are, bigger chest, or lifting more weight

It could be how your wrapping. It could also be where on your hand you are gripping the bar and your form/bar path.I’d recommend finding a powerlifting coach to go over it with you.

Hi Stephanie just watched the recent video on bench press form proper. Good video thanks for the instruction. Have a question for you. I am stuck on my sumo deadlifts. I am not a competitor. Just work out for the self health at 57 years old. I am stuck right now and by this December 2019 I would like to move up 65 pounds on my sumo deadlifts. I know that does not sound like much to some but to me it means a lot. I have been doing strength training on a weekly basis. I I am not concerned about max effort. However I set goals for myself and Weekly I will add weight to push myself. I don’t like to stay complacent with the same weight. Frankly I focus more on Core and leg strength training So I am a stronger deadlifter. Any advice on Jeaneen that 65 pound game on deadliift please? Matt. Colorado

My right arm really struggles to keep up with my left (although I am right arm dominant) would you suggest working more with dumbbells to strengthen that weak side? My bench always gets lopsided the heavier I go because of the weakness from my right side.
@boydmccollum692
@boydmccollum692 5 жыл бұрын
Pancakes N Weights Yes, definitely. The downside to only doing barbell work is that one side begins to dominate. This also happens in the squat. Don’t forget to do dumbbell work for your shoulders and triceps - once off the chest the bench press is more front shoulder and triceps. You could also check to see if you’re losing tightness in your upper back/torso as you lift the weight.
@FugglesRift
@FugglesRift 5 жыл бұрын
if you have a strength imbalance in your chest like i do theres a good chance that one side is weaker than the other, thats the symptom. the logic to use dumbells instead of a barbell makes sense right?? force both sides to do the same amount of work, but its not a solution. the cause is not that you have a weak side, its more likely that (like mine) you have a hard time getting your chest to fire on the right side during the bench. doing dumbell work will not fix this, its a different movement. believe me i could shoulder/tricep the weight up just fine and still not hit the pec. you need to learn to activate both sides equally, then over time once your right side is firing it will progress hopefully up to the left side. train to the technical failure of your weak side, yeah your left is going to have more reps in the tank but thats ok. the best way i have found to get your chest activated is to really pull your shoulders down and back before the lift (this is really hard with dumbells). after you unrack the weight row the weight down using your lats (like stefi says) use the cue "pulling your chest UP to the bar" this really helps open the chest up on the eccentric, then initiate the lift with your chest NOT your shoulders. dont try to get extra range of motion at the top by rolling your shoulders forward. if you need help feeling your chest activate think about squeezing the bar from the knurling in towards the center (like your trying to make the bar shorter as if it extends/retracts from the center). practice practice practice the movement using light weight. if it gets heavy youll just go back to your old form to get the weight up. its not about completing the lift, its about memorizing the proper body mechanics. dumbells do work great once you learn the movement, it can be a challenge to get set however so you have a solid platform to bench off of. i HIGHLY recommend doing dumbells off the floor instead of a bench at first. your range of motion goes down but you can learn how to set up with the weight. same thing, dig your shoulders back and down into the floor, use light weights, pull your chest apart on the way down like your trying to bring your elbows together behind you, or like your trying to lift yourself off the floor using your elbows. good luck!
