On 06 September 1965, Pakistan decided to launch aerial attacks on several Indian air bases. The plan was ambitious but various difficulties limited the number of available aircraft. Sarghoda airbase was able to launch only six F-86 Sabres divided in two groups against two different Indian bases. The first group, led by the famous M.M. Alam encountered four Indian Hunters on their way to the target.
The second group led by Sarfaraz Rafiqui, the double Vampire killer from the first aerial batlle of the war reached the destination, but couldn't find the enemy airfield due to low light conditions. They however found two Indian Hunters in the air.

GENERAL CHUCK YEAGER: 1971 'The Pakistanis whipped their [Indians’] a**es in the sky, but it was the other way around in the ground war. The air war lasted two weeks and the Pakistanis scored a three-to-one kill ratio, knocking out 102 Russian-made Indian jets and losing thirty-four airplanes of their own. I’m certain about the figures because I went out several times a day in a chopper and counted the wrecks below.'

When about one and a half decade ago I worked for Cunard on board of the MV Queen Victoria cruise ship. The homeport was Southampton back those times. Very close to the "Ocean Terminal" or "Oceanic Terminal" there is the Solent Sky Aviation Museum. I saw a Folland Gnat there. Man! That aircraft is tiny! I'm 180cm tall and almost could look over the canopy top! Very funky fighter, a "pocket fighter". Also there is the only remaining Saunders Roe SR.A/1 "flying boat jet fighter" (3 were built, 2 crashed, 1 is at Solent Sky). That's a huge beast! Also a huge Short Sandringham flying boat (civilian version of the Sunderland) and many other beauties! If someone visits Southampton and love aircrafts, the Solent Sky is a must on the bucket list! I was there at least 3-4 times. Oh, and as I was the only visitor one time, the guy in the museum showed me around INSIDE the big flying boat! The cockpit, the passanger accomodations, the luggage area, the onboard "kitchen", etc. More than exciting, I can tell you that. I wish I could go back in time and take a full Caribbean trip on board of the classic flying boat! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solent_Sky

Lt Imtiaz Bhatti) was so devastating that the indians has to decommisionise 80 of thier vampires along with 80 (approx) ouragons! He knew there was no way out but he still fought a war on 3 against 9. He could have made it back after his guns jammed but he didn't, a true role model for the youth!

Both the Hunters were jumped by the Sabres, as the first thing which announced the arrival of the Sabres was the clattering of bullets in Pingale’s Hunter by Rafiqui’s Sabre. Pingale ejected at 100 ft. and landed on the periphery of Halwara airfield. Gandhi’s aircraft was simultaneously hit by the second Sabre flown by No. 3 (which was Flight Lieutenant Yunus). This is substantiated by the fact that both wreckages were in close proximity and both Indian pilots were also recovered in close proximity. Gandhi ejected promptly and landed in the outskirts of Halwara Airfield. The Halwara ATC yelled at Northern CAP about the Sabres shooting down the Southern CAP. Evidence suggests that at this stage of the battle, Squadron Leader Sarfraz Rafiqui had ordered his formation to abort their mission and exit at deck level. Even an average Fighter Leader, according to most war veterans I have spoken to, would have wanted to immediately get out from the beehive over an enemy airfield. There is a 99% chance, that an ace fighter leader like Sarfraz Rafiqui would have ordered a fast exit. However, the Sabres were exiting westwards, their silhouettes were prominent in the setting sun, as compared to the Hunters which were coming from the east where darkness had taken over. This explained the predicament of Rafiqui who was not able to locate the Hunter settling behind him and was unable to take any evasive action. He was shot down by Rathore. Neb was also dead set on Yunus Sabre. Yunus upon noticing the flashes in his rear view mirror pulled upwards as he also was unable to locate a Hunter on his six. This enabled Neb to catch up fast and take a clean shot at him. This marked the end of the dogfight. These two Hunter pilots confirmed that during this brief one minute battle there were only 2 F-86s and not three. The third Sabre was supposed to provide cover to both the Sabres at front, however it extricated itself out of the battle leaving both Sabres defenseless. Rest of the fictitious story by the sole survivor remains a sad reflection upon the pilot making up the delusional fable, no less upon John Fricker and especially the well reputed sponsors and authors of PAF Story 1988, without any professional validation or remorse.

The original PAF plan, set out several months before, to pre-emptively strike the IAF bases and destroy their aircraft on ground could have been disastrous for India had it been implemented. I think PAF didnt put it in action as that would have resulted in a very long and severe war which either side was not ready for. Remember two years later, something similar was done by Israel to the Arab neighbours and its results were a huge success. But for that, it had unlimited support from the US.

At the close of the war Indian Airforce had achieved total air superiority and pakistani air force was just flying air defence patrol ! Especially after the bombing of Peshwar with canberras where pakistan had kept its fighters out of the reach of the IAF!! Have to give credit to IAF wherein the Paf were fighting with the latest sabers and F104s but the Gnats and Hunters destroyed the myth of them being indestructible in this war!! Good video will link and IAFs Documentary on the air war of 1965 in the comments.

This was a tragedy for the Pakistan Air Force. These two pilots were legendary professionals who got caught in a melee. The legendary leader Sarfraz Rafiqui despite the jamming of guns refused to leave the combat and lost his life in this process. The day they lost their lives was a day of mourning for PAF. However, the sun of 7th September 1965 rose with the historical combat of M.M.Alam who shot down five Hunter jets in one combat thus uplifting the sobering environment among PAF aviators.

@@hrishikeshbasumatary4725 Well, if you read the account of this battle, you will learn that he shot down Indian jets because they started turning in the same direction thus presenting themselves in the cross-hair of Alam's jet. Had they broken out in an attempt to sandwich Alam's flight, the result of the combat would not be that devastating for the IAF.

@@hrishikeshbasumatary4725 Pakistan lost the war not because of the bravery of the Indian Army that entered East Pakistan with 50:1 superiority against 34,000 Pak Army soldiers spread across thousands of square miles in the country. Secondly, it was the corrupt leadership of the Pakistan Army (Yahyah Khan, Niazi, etc.) who made an evil decision to attack their own people who were demanding their just rights. When the Pakistan Army was bogged down in vast swathes of East Pakistan, General Niazi surrendered. This surrender was even unexpected by the Indian military leadership. Read the books of your military historian and listen to the interview of Field Martial Manekshaw who declared the Pakistan Army a gallant army. Had it not been for the corrupt leadership of the Pakistan Army, India would have suffered heavy losses and perhaps this war ended with massive casualties on both sides. Pakistan Army mid-level leadership and soldiers were ready to fight till their last breath.
@naherf385
@naherf385 2 ай бұрын
@@hrishikeshbasumatary4725 Your comments are based on the history taught to you. Pakistan lost this war because of the extremely criminal attitude of the Pakistan Army leadership, which was corrupt to the core and highly incompetent. I am referring to Yahya Khan, Tikka Khan, Niazi, and others. These individuals committed unthinkable crimes against their own nation. Nobody in West Pakistan wanted war with India, neither in 1965 nor in 1971. While we have no doubt that India was, and is, our enemy, we gave it a historic opportunity to defeat us. However, even in 1971, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) rose to the occasion. Although it was barely present in East Pakistan, in West Pakistan, it fought well despite the grounding of Bengali pilots and technicians.

Reminder that India won the war in its own perspective and history books, but the fact remains that on a international scale, it ended in a ceasefire. Its literally states on the Wikipedia, the results were inconclusive and that on ceasefire terms there were no territorial changes

Wrong. Here's the direct quote from Sajad Haider's book: Rafiqui shot the leader of the first two Hunters spotted by him and by Cecil’s own irrefutable admission it was Yunus who had gone after the second Hunter flown by Flg Off Ghandhi. Ghandhi did manage a pot - shot at Cecil but was not able to get him. This distraction cost Ghandhi dearly as Yunus, who was chasing Ghandhi, eventually managed to shoot him down. The No 2 himself admitted to me recently that he did not shoot the second Hunter from the first pair spotted by Rafiqui. He had earlier claimed shooting down the third Hunter which did not happen because only the first two Hunters had been shot down - the third and fourth Hunters had shot Sarfaraz Rafiqui and Yunus when the battle had ended.
