That is the only hollow handle knife you have shown that I would trust. The one piece construction will more than likely hold up to hard use. I don't like serrations, but I think they make a model without them. I was hoping the wood wouldn't light from the fero rod so you would pull out the fatwood. I will have to get my fatwood fix somewhere else today! Thanks Brian.

If I were going to purchase a hollow handle knife, which I'm not going to because frankly I don't have any use for one, I would definitely get this one. I would bet that you could break this knife if you really, really tried but I doubt it would break on you under even extreme "survival" use. I have never even seen another hollow handle knife that I would say that about at any price and this one is under $100, which puts this one in a category all by itself. If this were the only knife I had and I was somehow thrust into surviving with it, I'd be pretty darned happy to have it. Thanks for the re-review, I had forgotten this knife even exists so it was all new to me... again.

It's a great knife for the $, Finally, only person to mention it's a Chris Reeves Project 1 copy! I had two of them, and sold them for big $. Honestly, I think the Schrade just as good for a fraction of the $. The Reeves knives were safe queens, the Schrade gets used. PS, made in Taiwan. 1070 is also and under appreciated carbon steel and with a good HT, tough as chit.
@LXT43
@LXT43 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. For what it costs, it's a good deal. The price is low because they can make this thing in Taiwan. I can't imagine how much it would cost if it was made in the USA. Probably triple digits and I'm not even talking custom. The Chris Reeve version was kind of brittle. I think the A2 steel was hardened too high. That is why it failed the way it did when Noss tested it years ago. I think the Schrade version would do better at a fraction of the price.

I bought the SCHF2Sm. It's smaller, has more of a clip point and no serrations.. I don't like serrations on a knife. I used to find it cool until used it in the field. I really like it. The only downside for me is that I live in Canada and when it's cold out, that knife feels like holding a piece of ice. You can almost feel the cold through leather gloves. Other than that, it feels great. I put a small survival kit in there but have yet to need it. doubt I ever will. But there's something in there just in case.

Lol. I see you did a vid on the Cold Steel Bushman about 7 months ago. I just think it fits into the Rambo series as well. My personal Bushman has a sharper 90 degree spine, two plastic corks to seal the handle, and a leather case on the sheath with a diamond sharpener, can opener, and an old timer knife for smaller tasks. Inside the handle Ive got a small survival kit in a ziploc baggie for extra security against water.

Honestly, aftewr Taylor Brands sold the company, it just isn't the same. And I'm not talking about the Chris Tanner knife drama or even about quality in general. It's more like it changed from a family of "knife people" who ran a pretty large business to a pretty large business who happens to sell knives. They have discontinued lots of models (like the smaller version of this knife) and hardly release any new designs. Which means there aren't any new knives for me to review.

Good video. I have always loved this Chris Reeve design and I have had good luck with Shrade knives. I like the sheath that came with it. Not to say one piece hollow handle knives are bad, but there are several things that make me vastly prefer a separate tube handle: 1-Separate tube handles are thinner and lighter in the tube wall thickness than these solidly machined pieces tend to be, so there is less handle weight and more storage space: You carry that extra one-piece mass every second, and in the wrong part of the knife. 2-The connection area to the handle in separate tube knives is typically a poured epoxy resin glue plug, which is again lighter than having a solid metal mass, and is identical in strength even with extreme abuse, IF the tube is roughed or stepped up inside for the resin to lock on to... 3-Separate tubes allow for a broader separate guard that protects the hand better, an impossible feature to replicate in one piece designs (certainly not at a reasonable cost). Even if the overall weight is the same, the weight distribution of a one-piece knife will have far less blade bias and yet offer less hand protection, and this combines to create a larger effect than each item individually.

The serrated bottom edge isn't good for me because serrations aren't good for carving & feather sticking and the bottom edge is what we use for carving. A button compass in the handle cap would've been better than the screw driver set.

Hey Brian, thanks for putting the SCHF-1 through its paces for us - an enjoyable vid, if ever there was one! Although I know you took that HF Rambo knife apart (literally), and I can’t recall seeing you do any features on folders, I can’t help but wonder if you’d feel as favorably as I do towards one of Harbor Freight’s newer knives, which is also $7. It’s a 4” 1/2-serrated drop point folder, with a liner lock, an 8Cr13MOV blade and G10 scales. I’ve carried it every day for about 2 years and beaten the hell out of it, and it’s never let me down. Care to grab one and put it through its paces? (And no, I’m not affiliated with them.)

late to the party still this knife with the round hollow handle and bit holder is perfect for bushcraft and survival. The round hollow handle is great for bow drilling, whittle down a branch to bout the right size screw it in and wrap the bow string round the handle, lots of grip wont slip. Spin easy until an ember is achieved. The guy who made the decision to incorporate impact driver bits must have looked into the future as you can buy a multitude of drill bits, spade bits, and augers for any drilling operation. Though admittingly they should have made the female socket on the outside of the cap. the blade is no chopper but excels at battoning.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose oh an easy mod with pvc just shaped a small piece to cover the tip with a heat gun... That is the pvc slips on the knife tip and makes for a really slippery spindle point. You could also use copper. All in all works good as a general drill. Try it!

Brian, it's not a knock off of the Chris Reeve project. Chris Reeve sold that knife design many years ago. I assume to Schrade because the knife is exactly like the original Chris Reeve. Although I have not been able to verify that myself so I thinks it's unfair to call it a knock-off. Also, I talked to BTI / Schrade a few months ago and the smaller version of this knife is not being made anymore.

Good review! 👍👍 This knife is almost a duplicate of the Chris Reeve Project 1 knife. I believe this one is 1070 steel while the CRK original was A2 steel. The original was designed by Chris and either a Marine or Army Sargent has an all-around knife for use in the field. So, in addition to normal knife stuff it was supposed to hold up to digging, chopping, combat, etc.. The short section of serrations were to aid in cutting all types of cordage. While not saying this knife has the same quality control as Chris Reeve Knives (who I believe received the billets for these hollow handle knives from South Africa), but when properly monitored Chines manufacturing can be very acceptable, but constant monitoring is the key. I have no issues with Taiwanese manufacturing. I agree with you, having owned this knife and the Boker/Martin knife that these are very good products. In addition to the knives you mention at the end of your video Sam Wilson of Wilson Custom Knives in Portland, OR makes a superb hollow handle knife.

What a soapbox that is for me!! The scary part is that "half of those know they're smart-and they vote"! Great clip, keep 'em coming and keep up the good work! Have fun, be safe. This comment comes up a lot. Let's just say that the USA uses both metric and imperial, and have for decades. Let's call it a soft change. Virtually every unit of measurement device over that time frame has both imperial and metric markings. Interstate highways, at least those I drive, are marked in miles with kilometers right below them.
