With Sia Music Movie coming out soon, I found out that Sia spoke out about the bad repetition the Sia "Music" Movie Trailer got from the autism community. But with Sia now talking about the autism movie's controversy, I decided to see what she said in the article following my previous video on this new autism movie.
Sia's Movie "Music" is set to release in February 2021 and I want to review "Music" when I can. Would you want to see me do a review on Sia's Movie? Also, what is your opinion on Sia speaking out about the backlash from the autism community?
As Sia's Movie represents the autism community, there was a lot of backlash and I made a video giving my thoughts on the situation at the time. But I wanted to clarify some of my points made in the first Sia Music Movie Backlash video, Sia's involvement with autism speaks, talk about the petition to get "Music" canceled, and more.

Hi indie people! With this video, I tried to clarify points made in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3OwhZetj7ybkKs But guys please be respectful when leaving your comments as last time I talked about the Sia thing, it got messy really quickly. So be mindful that people may not share the same opinion as you and please ensure we are commenting with proof of it's something Sia said as well. Like I say, I don't want to spread misleading or misinformed info. Appreciate you guys ♥️ Andy

I appreciate your taking the time to address your own emotional state and clarify your points and the information you had available at the time. I still think that this is a case of Sia not knowing what she doesn't know and assuming she's an expert because she's only consuming media (not research) that validates her own biases. She can have every good intention in the world, but good intentions don't negate bad decisions. Accepting that you made a mistake and working to do better is what is important, and she still seems not to have acknowledged the amount of hurt she has caused except to brush it off because she was tired and that makes it excusable.
@IndieAndy
@IndieAndy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Katie! See I do think that the intention was good as I said in the video. But there's a massive difference how those intentions are portrayed or shown. Like the movie could be good in intent but could shown bad stereotypes etc. So yeah I really agree with this and would like to say thank you for commenting a fair comment 👍

My thoughts definitely haven't changed, it sounds like Sia wasn't nearly as well informed as she believes, and quite frankly, she shouldn't be saying anything if she's just going to put her foot in it. Sia needs to get it into her head, non-verbal does not mean they cannot read, write, or even type, it is exclusively about speaking.

Like you, I want more characters in media who are autistic.. More positive representation. People on the spectrum deserve to be normalized. Just the other day my grandmother was saying that (TRIGGER WARNING) she would never keep a child that was Autistic. That autistic people are "vegetables", and that it needs to be cured because when she was a kid it didn't exist.. it absolutely broke my heart. So many people (especially over 40 years old) have this mindset.. And many "autism mommies" and organizations like autism speaks just further stigmatize something normal. Autism is normal. I am skeptical about the movie for a few reasons, most of which are related to Sia's behavior throughout this whole thing. She just comes across as lacking knowledge on the subject, which worries me.
@sylvan6415
@sylvan6415 3 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry your grandmother said such horrible and cruel things to you regarding autistic children. She is obviously poorly educated on the subject, as well as incredibly insensitive. I am an autistic grandmother and can assure you it very much existed when she was a kid. The fact that a lot of autistic people (like myself) went undiagnosed for a long time doesn't mean it wasn't there, and having gained a university distinction I would hardly class myself as a vegetable! Ignore your grandmother in this regard, she is talking utter codswallop. If any people need curing, it is those that hurt others. The level of emotional immaturity Sia displays in her tweets worries me too. I hope her film is not the debacle I envisage, having viewed the clips.
@IndieAndy
@IndieAndy 3 жыл бұрын
Aww wow I'm sorry about that comment! It's just so wrong when people have that mindset as I imagine it's based in general ignorance. Have to say that many older people can be like this but there are those who are just so accepting and kind of us it's amazing. But this is why we need to keep in going with the awareness raising and acceptance stuff. I agree with you on that last point also!

I am super worried for Maddie. She has been treated super super badly by SIA, honestly if SIA was a man everyone would be SO worried that Maddie was being groomed, while it’s most likely not sexual, she is still using huge levels of power over Maddie since she was very young. She has controlled her entire career since finding her and I am really worried about a talented young woman having her career ruined but someone as gross as SIA. I worry this power imbalance isn’t healthy.

If I'm honest I'm still a little sceptical of the movie and of Sia, "It was 3 o'clock in the morning" yeah, sure (what goes on the internet stays on the internet). And the fact it turned into a non apology (digging herself deeper into a hole) kind of proves to me she only went to the papers to save face and the films reputation. I'm not going to cancel the film or sign that petition (because it would be quite hypocritical of me given I'm against cancel culture). The only part of the protest I will be in is not seeing the movie (and even if there wasn't all this controversy, I still wouldn't go because honestly it's not my type of film), I won't stop others from seeing it but I won't touch it with a barge poll.

I have only a limited perspective of the film industry and I feel that that's a relevant viewpoint also - and I think part of the reason I've been so unwilling to give too much of the benefit of the doubt to Sia and those around her on this situation is based on the fact that there are so many resources and so many people who would have been willing to help. Even a cursory glance at any social media platform would make it clear that there is something complicated going on with autism representation - and I have to imagine that any number of casting agents would have been able to direct this production towards a multitude of autistic actors. The reality is that ticking this box is *not hard* and the fact that Sia would pretend otherwise is frankly perplexing. If your circle of potential actors included exclusively the inner circle you had already built in the industry then sure, that's a challenge. But if you actually went to the trouble of exuding any effort at all, I can't guarantee it would have been possible to find a nonverbal actor with ASD (I really do not have the most experience) but without hesitation I guarantee it would have been possible to find an actor with a good degree of understanding and who fit within the broader spectrum of autism.

I mean I haven’t been following the situation very much but I can’t support Sia with this. I don’t really like her songs anyway, and I don’t know enough about Sia herself to say anything about her generally. Music (the movie) seems really ableist to me. Movies like Wonder did their job well in my opinion, but music just seems like it’s not going to be that good of a movie with no research put into it. Sia can say she put research into this movie, and that may be true on a basic level, but the partnership with Autism Speaks shows that there may not be *enough* research thrrr Edit: there. I agree that the film was not handled well but I wish people would remember that actors have to work with scripts given to them. To criticize the actors as if they have some sort of control is unfair. They don’t direct the film or write the the script or research the base material. To attack the young person playing the Autistic person is putting the blame in the wrong place. Also if Asia wanted to honor an Autistic friend by doing the film it is really unfair to question her motives. Criticize the thing specifically wrong and offer help and guidance to fix what is wrong.

. I'm not a fan of "Only a (blank) person should play a (blank) character". The craft, in acting, is getting us to suspend our belief of who they are, and believing who they are portraying. Say whatever you will, but that sword cuts regardless of the direction of the swing. I'm sure there are more actors and actress, in the autism spectrum, playing neuro-typical characters, than the other way around. Limiting certain types of people to certain types of roles is discriminatory and a disservice to all actors and actress everywhere. . Having said all of that. crap director + crap script + crap acting = crap film each and every time.

@@IndieAndy It’s from this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXq5oaOqZb6Dn9E The interviewer was referring to Sia’s wigs which Sia has always referred to as putting on anything to turn it into Sia the pop star. Women, men, dogs and even inanimate objects become Sia the pop star once they put on the Sia wig. In the film, the character puts on Sia’s wigs and it’s an emotional and deep scene in the film. This is the context behind what Shirley and Sia were discussing. But OP distorted what was being said and said Sia referred to disabled people as wigs, which she didn’t.

I think that: - Everyone can act as an autistic person, after all is what acting means. - Maddie has been her star for ages, I understand why she decided to go with her. - Sia didn't have bad intentions by making this film and I think she isn't one of those who are thinking about money and fame only. - Autistic community in general has been very mean to her when there was no need to get to that point... I understand, at the same time, that some of us lack the ability to say things with empathy or have more tolerance... We should have only made suggestions, not asking for a cancellation. - Sia should have made more research. - Sia is not known as a movie director, I'm not expecting this to be a masterpiece, so it should be treated as it.

1) Like I say in the video, neurotypical people I think can play autistic characters. But the point is that when it's a bad representation or the fact that the source material is poor. Then it reflects in the film and on autistic people. There have been many times where autistics open up about their autism and have been compared to the likes of Rain man for example. Which is a bad stereotype. So honestly if film companies etc cast autistic people in these roles where possible, at least for me I'm being represented by someone who understands. Which is the main point. 2) Maddie has worked with Sia for years so yeah it makes sense and I don't have an issue with that. 3) I did said in the video that that intentions are not bad BUT the way she handled it was poor. Surely you can see that? 4) I think the outrage from the community when Sia tweeted out was justified however I don't condone personal attacks on her or anything like that. I believe that it's fine to bring up criticisms like we were in the beginning. But the empathy argument is not really an argument in this case. It's to do with representation and people were really upset with it hence why people were angry with her. 5) Considering that we don't know what research she did or where she got her info from. That is majority concerning. 6) I agree, I don't expect this to be the best movie ever and frankly if people say it is then that's ultimately their opinion. As movies and what people like is open to the court of public opinion.
