Super High Roller Bowl- Is this a great bluff by Dan Shak or a great call by Fedor Holz? You decide.

Dan with the help of your podcast, paired with playing around 15,000 hands for free on an app, I entered my first poker tournament (at 29 years old) at the Gardens Casino in southern CA last night. I had no idea what antes were, how to enter, when to act, I was kind of a sh** show. I bought in at the 4th level totally late. There were 140 players total, and I somehow cashed in 5th place. This entire project began from finding you reading hands on youtube 3 months ago. It's literally altered my course in the real world. Thank you.

Wildheårt You think Negreanu is trying to "retain relevance"? He is by far the most well known and recognized poker player who's also been successful at the highest stakes for over a decade. He's always been an advocate of pro poker players being in the "entertainment business". This channel is one of the many ways he give back to poker as a game by attracting new/fun players to the tables so our hourly as players increases.

Great Call from Fedor, not seen much of Dan Shak playing, but seen Fedor in many tournaments and he studies his opponents after every bet and in between, we might not see the tell from Dan but Fedor does and that is he doesn't have the stronger hand and I think that is what Fedor saw. I am newish to poker and only in the last couple of years been reading more about the game to help me learn & I've read your books Daniel and they have helped my game play enormously, so thank you for that. On River, Dan tried to bluff kings pair or even higher (k-9 full house). He had to ask himself: have I played so far like I had a Kings pair only? No, because I would have bet with kings pair on a flop with 2 clubs to prevent any flush projects or even straights. Also, I wouldn’t raise a kings pair on River. Can I make fedor think that I slow played K-9 Full House? Yes, that’s only hand I can simulate considering the way I played and it is in the range of possibilities for a big blind calling the rise pre-flop. However, as Negreanu explained, the timing and the size of the bluff is wrong because fedor will always call 180k of raise on the river...

Most of the time it just comes down to narrowing down someone's range based on the actions they take in a hand. It's a common misconception that this has much to do with "soul reads" so to speak.

I would prefer a check call on the river just to induce some bluffs he just got lucky that the other guy hit the 10 to call and even to decide to raise the river.. but I think most of the time he would have missed draws or even a weak A that he could decide to bluff with on the river.

Is it just me that thinks that Dan's raise on the river isn't a bluff? We know Shak is a highly capable player, so he definitely knows that calling is the standard GTO play. So we really have to consider why he raises: a) he is indeed bluffing. For that assumption to be true we have to consider the following: what could have us beat here after Fedor double barrels? IMO it's AA, QQ, JJ (we block), TT (we block) Kx, 9x, AT, J8 and QJ, even though QJ is a clear bet on the flop so more unlikely plus we block some. Now which of these hands can we expect Fedor to fold: Probably only the weak Kx and the JJ/QQ type hands and the T (and as we see in the result, even that assumption is too wide, because I feel if you call QQ you call JJ and AT too). So is this a good bluff? Probably not, ass everyone is quick to point out, especially considering the sizing. b) lets consider the other option: a value bet. Despite 180k being a decent chunk out of Fedor's stack, this is not exactly a big raise, which could be indicative of a value bet. So imo, Shak might think his hand is good here (as pointed out it usually is) and he is looking for a hero call out of Fedor. Shak has a lot of bluffs in his range: he checked the flop and called a turn were a single high card could have given him a gut shot, he might still be sitting on a low fd, maybe A high etc. So from Fedor's perspective, a raise is extremely polarising and is usually gonna mean Shak has a 9 or better or nothing (would Shak really play a lone K like this???) so when he decides to hero call, he can always assume he is beating all the bluffs. What are the hero calls Shak beats: underpairs to the board mostly and AQ/AJ. What's also relevant here is the fact that this bet looks a lot like big stack bullying and that Fedor might be inclined to take a stand and call down (which he kind of does, even though I admit with a stronger hand) So in all honesty, I'm really not sure either way, but I do think that it is possible that Shak is range merging to get thin value from Fedor. What do you guys think? Any validity is this "thin value gone wrong" rather than "sketchy bluff" idea?
@mcarlon-m.c.65237 жыл бұрын
HEY... GIVE US A BIG CLAP, THEN SNIFF MY GREEN FARTS!
@bigskia4 жыл бұрын
So Holz can be confident that Shak doesn't have JQ, which leaves Shak only repping KK99 (slow played), 9 (really slow played) or two pair (10/9). Seems Shak could have had those hands, so that was an interesting call.

I disagree with you Daniel about the bet size on the river because looks like you didn't take into account stack sizes. if Dan bets 450-550 that is basically 80% of Fador stack, so it doesn't make any sense to bet that much especially if Fador goes over the top and shoves his remaining 20%.
