DIY solar technology has been improving at a rapid pace but EG4 has been on the bleeding edge over the past 3 years and their products outperform other bigger names like Tesla at way less than half the cost. They’ve made it possible for many folks to build solar systems that enable their homes to run off solar 24/7. We started out with a small EG4 inverter and expanded it into a system that took us off the grid. Amazing. Thank you James and everyone else at SS for constantly pushing the envelope with home solar technology!

This totally blows the Sol-ark out if the water guys! I have been waiting for exact solution that is NOT proprietary on the GridBoss switching! My next customer scenario is main meter and 4 loads in main panel is 60 ft from sub panel with most house circuits in sub panel. The wiring and conduit alone would have been well over $4-6k for electrician to run 200 amp “loop”. No need for loop anymore.

@Tech4Ten
@Tech4Ten 21 күн бұрын
@idahoduckhunter from what I understand. Before you wanted 18kpv hooked up with full capability utilizing 200 amp grid Passthru u would have to run 200amp (4/0, expensive) cable to the 18kpv then to you main panel. This doesn't even include the transfer switch/shut off switch required before the 18kpv but after meter that is expensive to install. With this grid boss it is rated for service entrance meaning it can be primary disconnect so saves you from having to install another disconnect, then you are also saving money on cable costs since now u just need 70amp cable from 18kpv/flexboss to gridboss. this also allows you to also relocate the batteries with 18kpv to a shed or other place on property and not have to be within 20ft of meter (because 200amp copper is expensive, and now only need 70amp copper) with the 200 amp disconnect being separated from inverter makes it easier for electrician or DIY to piece together a kit. So you can start by adding grid boss, then can add inverter/18kpv with. Batteries afterwards.

Is it possible to configure a delay for the Smart Ports on the GridBOSS? I’d like to ensure a graceful shutdown of my HVAC condenser to prevent any potential damage (by HomeAssistant automation turning off the compressor in case of power loss).
@DirectSolarPower
@DirectSolarPower 22 күн бұрын
Yes, it is possible to configure a delay for the Smart Ports on the GridBOSS. The gridboss itself doesn't support delays on it's smartports, but If you're already using Home Assistant, you can create an automation that detects power loss or a grid outage through the Gridboss. The automation can then include a time delay before turning off your HVAC compressor or any other critical devices.
@MichaelBurko
@MichaelBurko 18 күн бұрын
@@DirectSolarPower Well, the approach you're suggesting is not going to work, because if you configure the GridBOSS to shed power from the HVAC unit on power loss, it will do so within milliseconds and Home Assistant automation won't have time to kick in...

A question. I am having 42 solar panels on a barn roof connect directly to my meter and the grid at the farm house. The meter is on 400amp box, which goes to two 200amp breaker panels in two different locations. If I bought an EG4 FlexBoss21 with a GridBoss for each 200amp breaker panel, how do I connect both GridBoss to the solar panels? I want to be able to use the solar energy from the solar panels to run my house and or charge the batteries if the grid goes down.

Im not an electrician but I believe you would run your solar panels (PV) to the FlexBOSS21s. The FlexBOSS21s would connect to batteries and GridBOSSes. Each GridBOSS would connect to a separate 200 breaker panel and to the grid (meter).

Because thats basically what the EG4 18kPV is. If you need multiple inverters then you a paying multiple times over for a transfer switch you don't need. By separating them you get more flexibility and are only paying for what you need. Like in my case I have to install inverter and batteries in the garage that is over 100ft from the meter (grid-in). If I use an inverter that has a built in 200 amp transfer switch I would have to loop 200 amps over 100 feet each way. That a huge cost. With the Gridboss I would only need to run a single 6awg wire from the FlexBOSS21 to the GridBOSS.

So who is going to install these things to make sure a homeowner wont screw something up .and does this have to have internet in order to work
@SignatureSolar
@SignatureSolar Ай бұрын
Hi! We recommend hiring a licensed electrician experienced in solar installations to ensure everything is set up correctly and safely. As for internet connectivity, it’s not always required for the system to work, but having internet allows for better monitoring and access to advanced features, like remote diagnostics and performance tracking. If you have more questions, let us know!

It is exciting for EG4 and me, however, SRP in AZ does NOT care. They insist on their external transfer switches and meters. I have 3 meters on my how with a Sol-Ark, which like the EG4 Gridbox or teh EG418kw have the built in the transfer ability. Again, SRP refuses to rely on these products. They want to meter everything and have their own switches. Otherwise, I think the new products are great..

I guess I'm at a loss in the cost savings and complexity world. It still feels to me that the main point of all this tech is to be off grid. So I'm not clear why adding complexity and cost.

This is a great setup for those of us that are grid tied and also need to place inverter and batteries in a garage over 100ft from the meter. They just came out with the 12000XP... may be a better solution for simple off-grid needs.

Still a horrible transfer time approximately 20ms (configurable to 10ms, which is still too high; it needs to be 7ms or under for sensitive equipment, with 5ms or less being preferred. Otherwise, downstream UPS systems will still be required for that sensitive equipment).

I'm thinking as James whips through all the numbers off the top of his head (input, output, amps this, watts that) that you guys could have some white board diagram showing ALL the connection ports of the units and show the min and max #'s of input and output. That way we would SEE what James intuitively knows. Too much, too fast. You market to DIY'ers, yet James is like an Indy car.

What were you expecting for a 16KW inverter…. A person using 16,000W inverter would definitely have an extremely large battery capacity and the 80W would mean nothing on such battery size

@@EasyyokeFilms No logic in your asumption. It's baseless. Solark 30k (UPS transfer 5ms) has an idle consumption of only 60w and it delivers 30,000w (real power, max continuous) and max. allowed PV Power of 39,000w.

The idle consumption is insignificant for me . I’m using a 6000xp on a recent installation where I have free at night electricity. I had to reduce the ac charge at night to 10 amps just to see the battery cycle a little. I tested it with a 3 ton ac without a soft start,demonstrating it to a friend in the HVAC business,and we were both surprised how easily it handled the inrush. He’s getting a 6000xp on his new house with the plan to expand later. Since he has gas also,two 6ks should be all he ever needs. I’m sure Solark has good products but Signature Solar is near and has excellent customer service and responds to what we are asking for.
