I once started snoring so loud I woke myself up. And it'd be pretty cool if I could absolutely not hear anything while sleeping, or at least before I fall asleep, because even the tiniest sounds make it hard for me to fall asleep and that's annoying. Of course, I'm not trying to romanticize being deaf either! Being able to hear is a bliss and i don't know what I'd do if I couldn't listen to music or hear my mom's voice anymore or ever again!! So yeah, being deaf is definitely not something to dream of, but there's still good sides to anything, and I wanted to point them out in an attempt to make deaf people feel better.

NYC Entrepreneur honestly, I think we should. (As someone who had selective mutism for a while, communicating wasn’t exactly the easiest. So cursive is less useful in my opinion. Since I’m business you probably get more deaf people then people who expect perfect hand writing)

My elementary school taught us how to sign the alphabet in ASL. It's never been in much use, but I've never forgotten how to sign them because I learned it at a young age! Whenever I need to communicate with Deaf people or signers, the alphabet takes a while, but it works :) I think ASL should be taught through elementary or middle school at least as an elective course. I would have loved to learn more about it when I was a child.

I'm sure You've thought of this already and I'm obviously late to the show here, but my Military husband is up at unholy hours AND I HATE LIGHT TOO, and so the way we have worked around that is a RED LIGHTBULB! Red light does not travel through your eyelids unless you're right up in there because it has the longest wavelength and, therefore, the least amount of energy in the visible spectrum. SO, we have a light he can turn on that is red and it won't wake me up and if I open my eyes there is no glare or squint-inducing light, but he can move around to get ready for work! Hope that was helpful! :)

@@Someone-tk7zh I actually had that anxiety growing up because I'm hard of hearing, meaning I'm slightly deaf in my hearing. I'm around half deaf in both ears since I was born and I slept with night lights all the time, even today in my 20's I still sleep with light on sometimes. I didn't understand why I hated the dark, but I do know I feared losing both my hearing and my eye sight as I grow older. I'm Asian and have glasses, so me worried about my eye sight, and hearing and my health, you can imagine the fear and worries I have. just imagine losing one sense you rely on so much, mine is sight and I'd be devastated to lose that too.

OmniscientWarrior well facial expressions play a huge part in signing. Think about verbal communication. Facial expressions are sometimes more meaningful than the words they speak. In ASL it’s the same. The expression helps convey the tone. Also you don’t usually stare at people’s lips when they talk unless you can’t hear them. Same with asl.

How about the base form of the word, "reify?" Most commonly used in action form, "reification." An example of such being done, "what has science done!" Science, in this case, has been reificated.

I guess you’re probably used to it by now but I think that must be so strange as a hearing person 2) Does your house feel very silent because Ryan prefers not to us his voice? If so, do you like to have music or some background noise just to make it less silent for you? Really love your videos by the way I really like how you both answer questions so open and honestly thank you both !

We find it easiest to communicate through discord/text than speaking since I can talk too fast or he won't know how to express himself in english confidently sometimes. "hands-on" love the double meaning. Also, I have something similar to you, except I don't choose not to listen. Sometimes the brain just doesn't comprehend speech as words, just any other sound. I know that someone is saying something, I just don't know what lol. Or I hear bits of what they are saying and try to fill in the gaps; sometimes what I think I hear is actually ridiculous which is how I know that's probably not what they actually said.

@@Nicolas.Fernandes Imagine you're listening to a German speaker. Based off your English, there may be a few words that sound familiar (ex. house and haus) but you certainly wouldn't be able to "get along". Unless you had studied a bit of German, you'd probably have absolutely no idea what was going on. Same thing happens with sign languages. Even American Sign Language and British Sign Language aren't considered mutually intelligible and they're "based" off the same spoken language. The alphabets are completely different too so it's not like you can finger spell words either. There's a few videos out there showing the differences between Sign Languages used in different countries and how different they can be, even with numbers. Although, I imagine the one advantage deaf signers would have is that they're probably used to gesturing. In the same way that two people that speak different languages can gesture to each other to try and get their point across, signers can do the same and might be better at it since they might be used to doing it with hearing people.

When I did a little bit of research a while back, I discovered there's a phobia of the dark. I cannot remember the name, but I remember reading how most people who have the phobia are deaf. This was actually reassuring for me, because I am deaf and all of my life, I have had this intense fear of the dark. I grew up being taught that only little children are scared of the dark and everyone grows out of it. I felt like something was wrong with me, as here I am an adult, and I still sleep with a light on. But after learning this and growing into my deaf identity, it does not bother me anymore, and I have learned why I am scared of the dark. Like Ryan explained, deaf people rely on their eyes and not their ears. We already don't have one sense. Taking away another is terrifying. I never go anywhere after dark, and always try to get home before the sun goes down. I am the world's heaviest sleeper, as having slept through tornados and a drunk person going through the yard and taking out a tree and fence, yet if the light gets turned off, I wake up immediately and go into a panic when I cannot see anything. I use the salt lamps with the adjustable light setting, so I have a nice low red glow in my room when I sleep. Funny thing is, my dog is scared of the dark too, so we both sleep with a light on.

Even expressions or the way they do something shows you what they are trying to say. For ASL most of the context and expression in the sentence is in the facial expressions. When you’re fluent you can watch the signs with your peripheral vision and watch the expressions so you get the full meaning and context.

My deaf ASL teacher told us we have to learn to understand signs without staring at the signer's hands. Apparently it can be considered rude if you just watch their hands. Also, facial expressions are SUPER important to understanding what's being said

I am just in awe of you two! My son was born 40% deaf so I learned basics when I was teaching him language, but Unfortunately I lost him at the age of 5, So I stopped learning. But I always felt the need to learn more… several years later.. while I was in prison.. I had my dad send me an asl book and I learned what I could from that book while I was there. Now that I am in the free world again, and changed my life back to the way it was before I lost my son, I have a great job now, and I just got promoted as a trainer. The 19yr old I am training right now is hard of hearing. And the skills I learned from that book have came in good use for us. I seem to be the only one in the warehouse that knows any asl however I am still a serious beginner but he commended me for my signing and it filled me with so much joy. I just found you two while I was searching to expand my knowledge of asl and watching these vids has helped me so much already I have even signed up with skill share to improve my signing ability. Thank you so so much for existing!

When Ryan talked about sleeping in the dark, I started thinking if there are special fire alarms for deaf people? You could be woken by a smell of smoke but otherwise, are there like fire alarms that blink or something?

I have to be honest...I love languages but before now, I hadn’t really considered sign. You guys are so genuine and calming! It makes me so upset that some people are close-minded and really disrespectful toward deaf people and sign overall. It makes me SO happy to see y’all talk to one another, barely looking, but understanding and laughing simultaneously and interjecting naturally. after all, you’re JUST talking, like normal😂 I look forward to learning sign❤️ thank you sm for your channel.

I love languages, too! But I admit, I came to ASL for selfish reasons. When I was younger I frequently had a sore throat. I didn't know if it would be a lifelong issue (it's not.) So I learned ASL in college. I'm glad I did. Just realized, this may not have made sense... I'd planned to use ASL with my family during times I couldn't speak. Sadly they were resistant to learning it. I ended up using it a little, on occasion. Then when I had kids, I taught them a bit.

Interesting my husband is Deaf and I am hearing. He likes the light off. We also talk in the dark lol. We spell words and sign and use tactile. We shake the hand when we understand and need the next word or sign. My husband said “ what’s wrong why doesn’t she get an eye mask lol” and then you talked about it. We like it pitch black too. You remind me of when we were young. We sign a little more asl but we were young like you when we met

We met in college. We both were in the tutoring lab. He was there getting help with English and I was there getting help with math. We locked eyes and I instantly felt a connection. I developed a crush on him in that moment. During that time I had no idea that he was Deaf. Weeks later I found out he was deaf. My thoughts were “ he is deaf, I have to learn sign language.” I worked up the courage to sign to him. I walked up to him when he got up to sharpen his pencil. I was like “ hi I like your shirt” and then he said “thank you” with the cutest smile. This girl who was hard of hearing said “ she doesn’t like your shirt she likes you!” In that moment I was so embarrassed and bright red. I left the lab pretty quickly after that. For a month after that We would go to the lab the same time everyday to get help on school work hoping that we would run into each other not realizing we both were doing it. Finally one day I saw an opportunity to met him officially. One of my hard of hearing friends was talking to him and introduced us to each other in the lab. She was interpreting for us back and forth. She was like “I see what is going on, if y’all want to talk you can talk back and forth on paper.” After that moment we talked for an hour on paper and exchanged emails. Texting wasn’t like it is today. We fell in love 😍 after our first date and now we have been married for 10 years. I still am crazy about him. He is amazing 🤩

A K he said he thought wow she must really like me!! I know the first time he fell in love with me! He didn’t have to tell me either. It was our 5th date. First canyon lake, second was church, third was subway ( when we came up with our nicknames sweet and sour), fourth was boating at town lake, and fifth was playing darts at a pool hall. I remember him getting really jealous because a guy came up to me and said “how do I sign you are beautiful?” I showed the man how to sign it and the man signed it to me. My husband was so jealous and pulled me closer to him. They say a person feels the jealousy emotion before the love ❤️ emotion. I asked him later if that is when he knew he loved me and he said “yes.”The moment he knew he fell for me..

When communicating with a deaf person, I feel like you got to give your entire attention in reading their hand motion. Unlike with using voice, you can be dazing off or on your phone and still hear them. My question is, are there times you miss part of what they sign and get lost in a conversation?
@elyjaeger8623

Actually in deaf culture you look at their face for the most part, it's just more respectful. If you get lost, usually context helps you or of not, you can just ask them to repeat :)
