my son was diagnosed 5 years ago .... and listening to your families diagnosis journey brings me a rush of emotions . remembering how I found out my son had type 1. it was a lot to take in! all the missed signs, I beat myself up when I think of how long he suffered.luckily I caught on quick and took to the internet . when he was rushed to emergency, his blood sugar was 1100. my son would not be here today if I just waited til his appointment.He is a miracle. it is still a lot , but we are doing great now.. It really makes me feel so good to know that I am not alone. your story sounds a lot like ours! from dealing with family , (not understanding), school nurse problems , late nights and just everything! I've been following you for a while, its just nice to here your journey then and now in a nut shell! thanks

As soon as you said that the doctor said, “Henry have type one diabetes and you need to go straight to the hospital,” I started to cry. You are such a strong amazing mom! Thank you for sharing your journey.

I was a hermit in my house after my daughter had her heart surgery, she had a feeding tube for 6 months. I remember my sister saying “you can bring her places what’s the big deal, id bring her everywhere” that upset me so much, I realized in that moment that she had absolutely no idea what I was going through and dealing with.

You go to a play date and everyone else's kids are snacking the whole time and yours can't..without getting shots. It was so hard. No way. Being a hermit is OKAY! :)

My daughter just got diagnosed this week she is 14 almost 15 she lived in a boarding school and she absolutely loves it she has so many friends and so many opportunities when I mentioned that I couldn’t see her going back she cried, her life as she knows is gone so I made the decision to have her going back in a few weeks after we are all comfortable with the idea!! So glad she is on the dexcom already which is so nice and a peace on my mind....it’s so hard to think I won’t be able to see her all the time but I need to give her a somewhat normalcy she has been crying everyday it breaks my heart! Thankfully she is so responsible (key the reason I allowed her to go to a boarding school) such an amazing daughter, student, friend!! This is so hard I am still in chock!!

I can't tell you how much your videos helped me when my son was diagnosed. I saw you and Henry and I was so hopeful. You guys gave me hope when I was in the trenches. Thank you so much for sharing this. Im sure I'm not the only one you helped in this way.

I remember watching one of your first videos of Henry and giving him his shot. I remember thinking he was so little but he was so brave. I used to be terrified of needles and here was this tiny sweet boy that had to do it everyday. These videos are so helpful.

It always bugs me when people say "oh I could never give myself a shot". You do what you have to do when it's a matter of surviving. BUT, even as a T1D when I think of my own 2 year old I can't help but to think 'i could never'.

I didn't find you until years after Henry's diagnosis, but I think I have caught up and seen all your KZbin videos. You and Andy are such incredible parents,as are all parents of children with special needs!! But having you share your journey has been a God send to ALL diabetics and I love you and your whole family and want you to know how much you are appreciated!! Being a t1d myself and being much older than Henry,I was 16 when diagnosed,you opened my eyes to the burden of our disease on our parents. Being a 16 year old rebellious kid,I just saw it from my point of view,and I will always be grateful to you for opening my eyes! Any newly diagnosed t1d will be BLESSED to find you!!❤Thank you dear Amy!!❤

I highly recommend pump and Cgm as an adult too. My life is a lot less rigid and Cgm allows me to feel normal. I have low glucose suspend feature and it means I don’t have hypos anymore (very rare). I can work, socialise, exercise and drive without much worry or inconvenience from hypos. It’s the best! Before Cgm I’d be constantly worried and would have a lot of hypos which would be disruptive. I wouldn’t exercise from fear of going low and I wouldn’t socialise much either. I’d constantly be trying to sit my levels a bit higher at work to avoid lows (my job is very active) and I’d feel guilty about risking complications.

Thanks for sharing your journey, Amy (and Henry)! So brave of you. I know you will have helped so many people with this series. Diabetes does run in my family and I remember my son used to constantly carry a sippy cup with him, drank litres of water a day and would constantly wet through nappies but otherwise seemed well. I had him tested a few times but all came up negative and he’s turning 20 in December so I guess the water was just a comfort thing for him.

I was diagnosed with type 1 at 25 and it was a crazy adjustment because I obviously had lived so much of my life without it and while I was adjusting to my new normal I didn’t want to go out at all. Partly because I’m a control freak and was afraid of going back into DKA if I ate like my friends and stuff and I feel like I essentially was in mourning of my old life. Now I have a handle on things my A1c is phenomenal and I am going back to doing all the things I usually do just with these new circumstances. I honestly don’t remember life before diabetes ( or at least it feels that way)

Hearing you saying how he was holding to the water it reminded me of my son he was diagnosed when he was 3.5 years and now he is almost 8 so yes same things happened to us and at the time I was freaking out and I thought well he might get a bill everyday for his blood sugar or maybe he will grow out of it. Such bad times

You punch in the number of foods and weight them and it tells you exactly the amount of carbs. We got it in 2011 from Target but they don't make it anymore. This is the one I would try if ours ever broke. It looks really neat and has 2000 foods. Ours doesn't have near that many! Ours is more like hundreds. Free returns so it might be worth trying out. Otherwise I'm sure Target and Walmart have something similar. Make sure it has actually number buttons. amzn.to/35tyxNY

Our son was diagnosed one year ago at 9.. it must have been very difficult at 2. What I did not like about the process is that nobody told us what is actually a normal bg. They said hb1ac of 7. Seemed no big deal, just to find out later a non diabetic is 5. They said normal range 70 to 180 when a non-diabetic does not peak over 130 after meals and goes back to 100 or below soon after. This kind of omissions made it easier at the beginning I admit but are very misleading. I hope our children will see a cure during their lifetime.

I am doing that with my son who got diagnosed about 2 months ago and his need for insulin it is much less and he looks much healthier. Please share the diet and food with us. You are a great mom. Let's all pray to have a cure for this health condition Asap. We all need it. It is so heartbreaking..... God help all of us and specially our kids...

Thank you soo much Amy for posting this...as you know my teen daughter is going thru this except it is hard to keep her blood sugar up...she is not getting enough carbs as her metabolism eats everything up...i am trying to get food with enough carbs in it....she has been having lows at school,and dealing with the jerk principal doesn't help,as he won't let her carry monitor at school,what good is it in the office if she is low in class...she takes protein bar to school and I sent with her today mixed nuts...school lunch food does not give enough protein food to keep blood sugar up...just frustrating at this point...she didnt go on field trip that her jr class went out of town for as she was afraid of getting low and not having access to some quick food...we go back to Dr on 16th and I am hoping for answers and that maybe she will recommend a Dexcom so her and I can see her numbers when she is low especially at school
@melisaroberson2209
@melisaroberson2209 4 жыл бұрын
The school cannot keep her from having her monitor. I believe it's against the Americans with Disabilities Act. A dietician would be really helpful in helping you plan meals to keep her stable! I'm so sorry she's had to miss out on fun things.

A huge part of diabetes is advocating for yourself. You don't have to wait for the doctor to recommend a dexcom. You can call dexcom directly and they will get the process started with insurance and her doctor. You get on that principal like a fly on 💩 until your daughter has access to what she needs. Not having a tester and glucose (I recommend sticking tubes of glucose tabs on every bag she carries, her locker, heck ask her best friends to carry them too) could be life ending.
@dreamflight6000
@dreamflight6000 4 жыл бұрын
YES! I remember. That's is so hard!!! And so wrong of the principal. You could get them into trouble fir sure. 504 plan is needed for that situation.
