Still the greatest movie I ever found, kid you not my group of friends found this VHS in the dumpster behind the library. They used to purge their renting selection of old stuff here and there, we'd score free movies once in a while. This movie was so prolific for us, we turned it into a ritual. It was a product of the times but we'd just have massive weed smoking sessions to this movie, reference it in public obnoxiously, named three weed pipes after the series, I could go on and on. My late brother (Friend) and I loved the hell out of this movie, I hope you're in Crom's halls my friend drinking and being merry.

I would love to see King Conan but i fear what ghey would do nowadays. I mean you saw the Conan reboot they tried. The problem with most movies now its they care mostly for stunning visuals and much less for a meaningful story with a message. And if it does have a message they basically have to spell it oug for the audience. A lesson told to someone is far less meaningful than the lesson you pull from your own insights, and cheapons its value. Conan holds up in large part because it leaves you to discern its meaning. Tell me, do you know the riddle of steel?

There is more profit throwing a sh*t take on a comic book and letting a computer generate everything except a few actors out to the moronic masses...then to put effort into actors, a story, locations, music that compliments the movie and can stand alone without it. Because actors and directors and music composers had all gone through the 20th century and been roughed up and humbled by tragedy and witnessed the good and evil in mankind. They could project it on their work. Today's actors and directors have had lived easy lives, have grown up in luxury and now fancy themselves god-like deciding right from wrong on a whim and bringing you stuff like cancel culture. Relying heavily on cgi because they have no real story to tell and seeing people stopping from going to the movies to see what is ADD garbage.

Yes! I loved that too. I'm all for powerful female characters, but getting bad writing crammed down our spinal columns is not the way to go. Sigourney led the 80s and 90s like a queen, then Geena Davis in "Long Kiss Goodnight" was a gem, but most if not all of the recent power girls in movies just suck. Noomi Rapace and Theron kick ass and will have long careers...I say pay them every dime for their talent.

You know if this movie was released today Conan would be doubtful of Valeria's skills when they first meet, but then he would be proven wrong when she takes out 7 dudes on her own while Conan stands there dumbfounded. And she would be played by a brown actress.
@sunsetbilly
@sunsetbilly 4 жыл бұрын
@Timothy Dexter True, true. (bit of a rant coming here - brace yerself) A key thing is that if you want to become a 'good' fighter as a man, you have to dedicate yourself to it. Valeria probably never fought a man who was not a 'good' fighter - she was just better. How was she better? By Sheer. Goddamn. Determination. For a woman to consistently outfight a man she needs to dedicate herself, 100%, to combat. Every breath of every day. Otherwise, she's counting on him pulling his punches, basically. I don't want to sound like a misogynist but .. this is physiology. Beyond that - I think this is a connection for Conan. Sure, he likes to soft & squishy girls; but Conan always is attracted, like a moth to flame, to strong women. The tougher, the better. I am always reminded of one of the Savage Sword of Conan comics which features none other than Conan's daughter. She'd grown up under the guidance of this temple, her mother some high ranking priestess. Said priestess had run off in her youth with Conan. The daughter is so wild and strong, unwilling to do her lessons like all the other girls - so mother tells her about her father. I'm always struck by one thing - the mother, as a young girl, says to Conan (I forget direct quotes) "say you'll always be with me. Say we'll be together forever." Conan refuses, and she gets stroppy. Conan cracks it, saying " I cannot see the future, and nor can you. I would rather be honest with you NOW. We share our time together, and then we move apart, or we do not. time moves on. Life moves on. In six months' time, will you feel the same? Will I? Any man who says he will be with you forever and will love you forever is a fool, or lying." And these characters could all accept this. Imagine Tony Stark telling whatsherface "yeah, totes loved you for a bit, babe, but, like, not anymore."

This was actually supposed to be the first of three movies. This one is about strength, i think the other two were gonna be about wisdom and tradition. I could be wrong on the kast two. But yes this movie does teach you a lot about being a man. Im glad it was a staple movie of my childhood. Edit: I know they made Conan the Destroyer but they didn't use the same director or script outline.

Not only that. Valeria is about the best female character ever. She has everything : Strength, Wisdom, Intelligence, Courage and Beauty. This is why this movie is one of the best ever made. The feeling of freedom in it has no equal. Subotai, Conan and Valeria are absolutely marvelous in it. Not to mention that Thulsa doom is one of the best, if not the best, villains ever made.

Sergeant York is a story of manhood. Conan is definitely masculine, but he's more a teenage boy. His physical perfection sort of symbolizes his innocence through ignorance- stealing, killing, philandering, all in good fun.

Conan is a masterpiece. A true modern day opera. How many films can you think of that are not chock-full of rubbish dialogue and pleasantries to appease to masses and their sensitivities? Nope. Not Conan. Conan *briefly* wishes he'd had a gentler life ... but he knows this is wishful thinking. Then he goes on to pray? He knows this is wishful thinking as well. Conan's focus is freedom. He knows, whether he lives or dies, it was by HIS decision. Whether it is a bad decision or not? Irrelevant. He made it. That is what pleases Crom! Not battle - but the freedom to meet your life head on.

Krom is one of warriors who was going along against whole army. Was able to do it any time. - Hell was always with him, like hard life he loved. Honest and pure just like heaven! Going with army he was singing very often before battle. - And his singing was so beautiful and strong that some armies going against hime were beaten only by it. Skies were going through his crazy strong voice joining life around in beauty and magic. - Very often I was going from another side with group of best assassins to melt army going through their heart before battle was started. I heard his voice through battle smiling to skies by my heart and my lips. - No regrets. No mercy. No questions. It was answer to everything right here, right now. - To what you are, to what you do. To what we love and always will. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN TO IT. - NEVER.

@fatarsemonkey Nah, no it wasn't, it could be argued as a fun watch if you switch your brain off a little. But I think you and I have a completely different concept of what the word "great" means if you think it could be applied to this movie. I would reserve the word great for movies that reach a much higher standard like Casablanca, the Maltese Falcon, The Empire Strikes Back, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Those are great movies this barely qualifies as a good one, Arnie cannot act for one thing. His bad acting didn't stop something like Terminator 1 and 2 from being good movies, hell I might even give 2 the great moniker. But that's almost certainly because James Cameron made him say next to nothing and toned down the stupid shit.

@M R This scene itself gives the audience such an enthralling feeling by showing two men being attacked by a Horde of masked warriors on horseback with menacing music playing along, and these two men being brave enough to not run and fight. This premise itself is very endearing and the makers really made this come to life by keeping it as realistic as they could. Most basic dialogue and great acting with perfect music, all part of an entire scene coming together in perfection.
