One thing I dislike about the remake is that the enemy variety took a hit. So many of the weirdos you fight are replaced by Lying Figures crawling around. As another example, the original had the Larval Stalker, which as a cute little shadow ghost baby that triggered your radio, but was harmless. In the remake the random bugs are what do that, and...isn't that just less interesting? And they did not remake SH1 because it has a film already, and SH2 has one on the way. It's for tie in reasons...

Dude, let me explain how much I love the OG game - I formed an entire band around playing covers from SH games and we had a big gig at a Japanese music festival one year. Yeah. And yes, Bloober was probably IN THEORY the worst studio I could ever imagine doing a remake. And yet here we are. And yet they did a fucking stellar job. AND YET there are STILL salty dudes like yourself and Yahtzee not willing to admit that yes, it IS a surprise to be sure but NOT an unwelcome one. God damn it, it's not a PERFECT game but they did FAR better than anyone expected, enough with the salt lol.

5:08 That was my thoughts exactly when I played the remake "Why didn't they remake silent hill1?", because all the changes they made just make it so much more similar to silent hill 1: a more hostile town, more enemy variety, more combat, bigger rooms to serve as combat arenas, jumpscares, a more "open world" approach to the town itself, a clearer distinction between foggy world and other world(even the other world designs themselves are more similar to the ones in silenthill1/3 instead of 2). While SH2 utilizes all it's limitations, plays to their strength and turn them into something unique, in the first game the awkwardness are genuinely it's shortcoming, you would actually be improving it if you changes the voice acting, story, and camera angle. But we all know the answer to that: SH2 was the game with pyramid head and the nurse, and people will buy it. And because the base is already good, it's really easy to remake it and have it turn out also good.

they probably done 2 first because it's considered as the best in the series by many, it's also worth noting that Bloober Team was supervised by the original devs, so it also kinda was their second chance on this game, improving on some things they maybe wanted to do differently (the music is also made by the same composer as the og) :P

SH2 also got improved in multiple ways and voice acting is definitely one of them, purists just cannot ever admit that the English VA in the original was just genuinely bad because they replayed the game so much that they think every single element of it was responsible for its brilliance. I really think they just overdid with the amount of enemies and padding in this game. The run from the hospital to the historical society, the prison, and the labyrinth itself just drags on to pad out game time. Survival Horror is one of the genres that suffers most from a padded play time. As much as I like Alien: Isolation, that game goes on for about 6 hours too long. I have similar feelings for this game, if you cut out around 4 hours, it would have been a much more palatable experience.

It's a weird kind of situation for me. I'm so starved of a good silent Hill game that part of me does enjoy the fact that there's so much of this game to experience But at the same time, you're 100% right. Even if I am enjoying myself because it's more silent Hill, at the end of the day it doesn't work in favor of the pacing. There can be too much of a good thing and a lot of people probably won't have the kind of patience and excitement that I have for what is indeed objectively just padding I'm with you on alien as well. I still think something like that IGN review was too harsh at the end of the day, but if I agreed on one thing about it, is that it drags on too long. There are too many fake out endings in that game. And lots of times the long stretches without the alien where you're mostly dealing with the Androids feels annoying rather than engaging Part of me almost wants them to combine Silent Hill 1 and 3 into one big remake if they are going to insist on the game being this long. Instead of trying to stretch both of them out.

How you feel about this Silent Hill 2 Remake is interestingly enough, kinda how I felt about the Persona 3 Remake from earlier this year. Things that were once simple are now needlessly elongated. For example, P3 on the PS2 gave you the option to skip combat tutorials. Reload forces you to stop so that they can explain how item boxes work. In P3, if you knew which two mirrors in the hotel to smash, you could run right for them to smash them without a fuss. Reload forces you to go to the wrong room first, have the characters talk about the mirror, go to another room, figure out the answer as a group, and then lets you do it. The unchanged stuff is still great, but what is changed often either feels bloated, different for the sake of being different, or just adds in what Persona 5 did because hey, people liked that game.

Idk man, maybe I am not a hardcore enough fan, but after playing FES, portable and reload, I am... really happy with what reload does? FES is just filled to the brim with small annoyances that make it really tedious to actually play. As an example, on paper, I can appreciate how the combat in FES being a bit slower and less flashy fits better with the atmosphere, but, in practice, I had to play the combat on 500% speed because I got too bored with the awful, slow, animations. Another example is the lack of a quick travel menu. While yes, it adds to the atmosphere, its just such a nuisance that I had to mod FES to add it in. While reload does make the game a bit less atmospheric and more hand holdy, it also just makes it better in all things gameplay, to the point that I cant imagine playing a different version of P3 ever again.

@@emhyrinovaremreisirinokrip7124 Look, I'm not saying that every single thing Reload changed was for the worst. It had a lot of good ideas and yes, general quality of life upgrades over the PS2 game from 18 years ago. I still think Reload is a perfect good game with a lot of stuff to offer. If a modern Persona fan were to ask me which P3 to start with and I know they'd already played 5, I probably would suggest Reload to them, despite me personally liking FES more. But Reload did either change or remove a lot of things that I thought were handled better in FES, so I know I don't like it better PURELY from a place of nostalgia. I don't like that Makoto can only wield swords now, I don't like how they changed how fusion spells work while removing most of them, not a fan of how you can't split up to explore Tartarus anymore. Many of those were things kind of unique to Persona 3 that later games removed, and it's a shame that a Persona 3 remake KEPT them removed. While your examples were things that FES didn't have because they didn't, at least for this series, exist yet. The things you used as examples were just things that later games had added, so of course the latest game was also going to have them. Even Portable from 2009 had already incorporated P4's fast travel map.

The jumpscare bullocks is something that DOOM 3 did horribly, too. The first time an imp, or what have you, jumps out from behind a door at you? Spooked. The 900th? Actually working against them at that point, as the shotgun was a melee weapon, and they were seemingly trying to eat it out of my hands. The first time an enemy jumps you from behind? Maybe harrowing. The 1000th? It's more infuriating that most the fights become a game of "pin the tail on the human". Scariest parts of the game? Hell in general, for how beautifully eldritch it was, and more pressingly, that single section where you needed an SOS key, or something, and you know there's demons around you, on the roof or in the walls... But they're not jumping you. Not screaming. Not being a bad haunted house ride. Between that and the red paint rug around the area, it's legit unnerving, because it's one of the only times you really get to soak in the atmosphere.

Even if Konami want to capitalize on their IP, like freakin all publishers want everywhere all the time, even the ones you like; Bloober did not make this in the ways of a cynical cash grab. The amount of care that's gone into every detail in this remake is the clear counter argument to that. You're just on the bandwagon of hate, in some echo chamber where you just regurgitate words you seem to have no understanding of what they mean. What are you gonna do next? The original Silent Hill 2 is the most important game ever for me, but I'm open minded enough to not let my biases control me. Must be depressing to be so ingrained in the herd mentality of disliking the remake. Actually believing that the remake is a deliberate assault against all who loved the original. With an inability to see when something is done with care and when something's an actual cash grab. Your argument just boils down to "make something new that others can play with but don't touch my stuff". Like your experience of the original is some objective parameter in all of this. Depressing.
