It's actually really refreshing to watch a review of the NSMB series that ACTUALLY talks about the level design. I always kept hearing the same "Oh every game is the same blah blah blah" but the levels aren't always the same, so why don't they talk about that!? The most important thing in a 2D Mario game.

@@buzzytrombone4353 SMG2 many have some better challenges, but the plot/story took a nosedive into repetitiveness. Even the Giant Bowser fight were gimmicky and lost its luster. SMG1 was the better overall game for at least having that cinematic approach and Bowser's boss battles at least felt like your actually fighting him. Not to mention the story. It became somewhat more than just "Bowser kidnapped Peach, go save her." It became something bigger the moment Rosalina was introduced. Honestly, my drive was to help Rosalina and her Luma star babies, because Bowser invaded their home and stole their power reserves. The only time I actually remember my main goal to save Peach when they mention it on some occasions.

Well, to be fair, "Color Splash" released on a console that was doomed to fail. Even if it turned out to be the best Paper Mario game ever, it would still be a Wii U game. And even though "Sticker Star" was probably the worst Paper Mario game, it was still a 3DS game. Games can only sell as good as the consoles they're packaged with, and the 3DS happened to sell more than the N64 and GameCube combined. So the fact that "Thousand-Year Door" and "Sticker Star" are so close to each other in sales, regardless of which game "won", it says more good things about the GameCube title than the 3DS title.

Cool to see a positive view on this game. I always felt like the vibrant colors, more unique level themes (in some areas) and really focused and interesting level design (plus all the crazy coin shit you can do) made the game feel really energetic. Also, something I feel that all other NSMB titles are missing is a proper flying power up. I know NSMB 2 reuses an old one but it's a damn good one and also added a lot to the game for me. I kind of like to think of the series as just the DS and 3DS entry. Imagine how awesome we'd all think it was if those two were the only ones that came out (well and New Super Luigi U too possibly).

It's a fun game, but there's many questionable things, like why did they remove stuff that was in the Wii version, like Yoshi, or some of the power ups like the Penguin Suit, or Bowser Jr, or getting to go into Peach's Castle? I don't see any point in cutting content in this game when they could literally just copy and paste it from the Wii to New Super Mario Bros 2 (Just like they did with every thing else in this game!).

You touched on it briefly in your video, but my goodness the small addition of the a cappella music was absolutely wonderful to me. I've always been a fan of just about every main Mario title's Staff Roll, but this one's soundtrack really made completing the game feel like, "sh*t, what now?" Additionally, the theme of the Star world (tied in with the reskin of the "Moon Coins") gave off a really mesmerizing vibe. Enough for me to get off the internet for tonight, fish out my Red 3DS and play my midnight away under the covers just like I did with NSMB 1 and my Red Regular DS all those years ago. Thanks:)

I remember this game being my guilty pleasure. I had a bunch of eShop points from Christmas Eve that I decided to spend on it, months after it released. It's nothing incredible, but the dopamine hit from turning everything into coins made me feel like King Midas. I just wish they could have made coins a bit more important to the game, possibly by rewarding players with a challenge mode with difficult levels, or a boss rush mode, after collecting a certain amount of coins. I liked it when I played it, but going back to the 3DS circle pad instead of an D-pad means that I'm unlikely to return to it.

It's funny, despite this game being generally regarded as the "Worst" in the NSMB series, I think it might be my favorite! (And for a lot of the reasons you listed) Sure, there's a lot of recycled content from the previous games but the way that content is reused is actually really solid when dig a little deeper and take it at more than just it's face value. I remember having so much fun with this game when I first got it, and even going back to it periodically it's still a genuinely fun game, and I think that's the whole point of it. It's not trying to be ground breaking or push the boundaries of what a Mario game should or shouldn't be, it's just trying to be Fun. And in the words of Reggie: "If the game's not fun, why bother?".

Here's how I think they should "Fix" the NSMB series. 1) Keep DS as is. 2) Remove the ice flower from NSMB Wii, let you bring yoshis through the level. 3) In NSMB2, have a "shop" where you can buy powerups, and maybe some coin rush levels. Add the Ice flower here. Have more unlockables for various milestones, like some characters (Or just in the shop(For example, Wario, Waluigi, Peach, Toad, Rosalina, or Bowser). Add a challenge mode, similar to in NSMBU. Add innovative bosses, similar to NSMB DS. Make this more like DS, maybe even add the blue shell, but probably not. 4) Get rid of NSMBU, it doesn't add anything besides boost mode and acorn suit, which can be released in NSLU 5) Release NSLU, a few years laterwith all the features of NSMBU, and maybe a couple of the good levels. Alternatively, have NSMB2 and Wii U as another 3ds/Wii U release, similar to mario maker/smash bros, but not under the NSMB moniker. Keep coins in NSMB2, with the shop upgrades, but maybe less of them. Let each of them have the same levels, but keep the additional coin mechanics in 2, and more challenge for Luigi. And yes, NEW WORLD THEMES!!!

These bolted blocks are supposed to be scenery in a theatrical play, cause that's what SMB3 is canonically, the same way SMB2 is a dream. They are bolted because they are decorations on a board, and given the context of the game, it makes sense and it is a very nice touch once you understand it. Here though, it's not the same. They are bolted for no reason, they just came back cause they looked nice. And I'm not complaining, they do look nice. Btw these are the exact points I bring up when I say that this is strangely my favorite in the series. The exact ones. Also, here (12:34) what happened is that when you ground-pound an unhit block and you see it move in rythm with your butt, it's not just decoration. The block physically moves up and down. 12:33 you got squished between the wall and the solid block moving to the left. Since the character hitbox actually moves downward when ground-pounding a question mark block, your feet were inbetween the wall and the block at just the wrong moment.

I think NSMBU innovates less than NSMB2. NSMB2 added all the features you mentioned, as well as wireless multiplayer and challenges / DLC. What new did NSMBU add? ...flying squirrels and an artsy-partsy stage... Oh, and Miiverse messages- hurray...

In case you actually don't know why you died @12:50 , it's because you ground pounded that block. Doing so causes the block to move slightly and this isn't just a visual thing! The moving wall then squashed you against the block on your right. It's possible to die this way in almost all Mario games, thanks to note blocks (which are probably the fourth worst programmed block type)
