How is Carmella marginalized [or overlooked] as a possible third counselor? All of the infidelity she was willing to overlook just to maintain the strong family structure [and she staying faithful until the fifth season]; being at Tony's side dealing with all of his panic attacks and hospital visits; going to therapy with him, etcetera..Tony really wasn't much closer to his wife than Pussy was to his wife. He saw her as a gold digger - as if she was incapable of anything more than producing offspring and taking her weekly allowance.

I always loved that "all due respect" line. It was like your free pass to say whatever the fuck you wanted, including personal insults, being as crude or as cruel or as callous as you wanted to be, etc., but then you say, "all due respect" either before or after your rant, and it's all good. Hilarious.

Syl was by far the most loyal (all the way to the end) to Tony. He never strayed, it seems the writers went out of their way to ensure it never even crossed his mind. No one could ever ask for a better counseler in any business, legit or otherwise. Fiercely loyal, always kept conversations between him and T private, and was smart enough to know when to counsel Tony even if it meant getting yelled at or put in the doghouse. Wish he did more acting...what an incredibly talented performer. Cars.

It's kind of sad that Silvio got flack about doing his job. He's consigliere of the Soprano family. I don't know much of anything about Cosa Nostra but I believe a consigliere is there to 'advise' on a situation before it goes awry and even to make peace with other families / factions if it does get ugly when necessary. Besides Silvio is Tony's oldest friend. The way Tony handled this was just heartless.
@robertthomas26019 жыл бұрын
Sil definitely should have taken this to human resources.
@orangejoe2049 жыл бұрын
Mike C Tony reminds me here of the way Michael Corleone treated Tom Hagen in Godfather. Even though the man is the closest thing Tony has to a real friend, as well as his official mob consigliere (whose job is to give him hard advice), he STILL can't bring himself to treat him like a human being. Has to constantly remind him that there's only one Boss and don't you ever forget it and he'll snuff anybody who ever questions him. He comes off like a petty tyrant rather than a leader. It's like dealing with a child, honestly, and you can see that Silvio feels the same way as Tom Hagen: "this man is not my brother, he is not my friend, he is merely my boss, and my boss kills his employees on the regular without conscience or hesitation."
@queensmickey9 жыл бұрын
***** I totally agree there, great analysis of this scene.
@anthonyanderson93039 жыл бұрын
***** Yes but Tony HAS to be this way. In his line of work, if you show any sign weakness, even to those closest to you, all the respect they have for you is out the window. Even someone who has been your childhood friend. If your leadership is questioned in anyway, all the pieces crumble. It's situation where they were both right in their approach. Sil was right to give the advice he gave, but Tony was also right to respond the way he did.
@orangejoe2049 жыл бұрын
Anthony Anderson Bullshit. True badasses rarely show emotion or speak at all, and they aren't threatened by effrontery or advice they think is stupid. They'd kill you like they'd zip their pants, but until they actually get to doing so, they just smile that funny way and their eyes have a certain "shotgun shine". Tony here is the opposite of that; he's just getting whiny and prickly like a little boy having an anxiety attack because his authoritah has been questioned. He doesn't look cool and boss-like; he looks like a mad kid attacking his mom for bringing him a bad report card. The consigliere position EXISTS so that somebody can be the bearer of bad news and criticism to the boss without getting his head lopped off in a hyper-violent macho environment like that. Tony is fucking with the system and being a bad mob boss. That's all there is to it. Correct badass response would have been (without even a shred of emotion) "Your advice has been noted, Sil. You're a good consigliere. But you don't have the whole picture, and I ain't changing shit. End of story. Now you're gonna say "Sure boss", I'm gonna smoke this cigar and you're gonna go downstairs and make me some money."

Love this scene. He's advised that his main fault is that he is too prideful, only to demonstrate it further with his reaction to advice from a trusted advisor. The last glance suggests to me that he knows Silvio is right, but that he'd never admit it. Perhaps the realization that he is not invulnerable too, given whats going on around him constantly.

Part of what makes Tony Soprano the best character in TV history is his complexity. So many commenters say he's a prick or he's a hypocrite or he's prideful. Well, yeah, he is. And he's a bunch of other things, too. Never before has a character been drawn so richly, with such depth and so many contradictions. David Chase writes all his characters with many sides and flaws, even the minor players. But his masterpiece, embodied by the late, great, lamented James Gandolfini, is Tony Soprano. He's infuriating, he's funny, he's tender, he's loyal, he's violent, he's capable of tremendous love and blinding hate in the same second. There will never be another character or another actor like him.

Tony saying he's completely alone in the end is true. He is, but he also isolated himself not because he's the boss, but because he wanted to. You don't have to be the boss and be alone. Jackie Aprile was the boss but still had Tony by his side as a friend. Tony choose his path and he's paying for it in the end- he looses all of his "friends" and stays alone, waiting for someone to wack him.

Tonys temper, first time i watched this episode i really thought tony was going to punch him or pull out a gun. He hated being told he was wrong or what to do.
