I hope this answered some of your questions about the cost of living in a van 😊. Of course this varies for everyone. I’ve seen videos of Van lifers with a $500 monthly cost of living and some some with a $2,500 monthly cost of living. There’s a lot of wiggle room in this lifestyle, in my opinion. Also, I did get health insurance at one job and never used it. Thank you for watching ❤.

🌴☀️No one could have told me that you weren’t in Trader Joe’s 😅 I’ve been to Sprouts several times but find they aren’t as “niched” as I’d like & they kinda have a Whole Foods price tag ugh. So I’d get the SO Delicious coconut yogurt & oat milk from there when I dont feel like making my own cashew milk. TOFU: OMGawsh I’ll have to try that fava bean one but did you know also on Test Kitchen she did a pumpkin seed tofu and guess what you don’t need a coagulant ( did i spell that right🤭 ) it’s soooo amazing just one ingredient sis 👍🏽🎉🎊 I’m catching up on videos as I took a break from YT. I’m a hard core knitter so I watch a lot of those but I’m doing an overhaul of the channels I subscribe to after being on YT for i dunno…15 years or so. Your monthly is incredible. My total is about $500 but I don’t drive a lot, I pay LA Fitness for the year and I too have to get rid of that damn storage…but that’ll happen when I get a larger vehicle. Love you in spirit, say hello to my bro Musa. I could chat with you for hours…okokok later☀️🌴

In 1 year you will spend $1200 for the storage. You can sale the washer and dryer and save that money plus put the $99 a month each month in a high yield savings account and have more then enough money to purchase new appliances or new scratch and Dent appliances for less then what money you will save in a year. And your new appliances will be under manufacture warranty. BTW I am in the east coast as well.

Storage unit fees definitely can kill a budget. I kept one for almost 10 years. Luckily I had a dirt cheap one that started out at 35 a month and by the time I finally cleared it out in 2022 it was 70 a month. I know people paying around 200 a month. It was a bit painful to get rid of everything in it at first but now I can barely remember what I had so in the long run it wasn't important. The human connection to stuff is a bit weird and is still a struggle to avoid doing it all over again.
@simmpleenough11 ай бұрын
I agree with you. I think I’ll be the same way when I clear out my unit (hopefully this year). I probably won’t remember much of what was in it. I can barely remember what’s in it now!

I do the accounting for the health plan at my job and I will tell you a simple hospital visit could cost $50,000 or more. I really think you should get a cheap insurance plan from the Healthcare exchange or a minor incident like simply falling down a few stairs and twisting your ankle could wipe out most of your savings. You can afford $10 a month for a basic plan. I hope you never need it but it's good to have.

Washers and dryers aren’t even that expensive. I bought mine secondhand for $400 together. If you don’t know what to do with your washer and dryer, try contacting a secondhand appliances company and they will buy and haul them from your storage. Spending 1200 yearly is not a smart thing to do just to keep your w&d. Donating some of your stuff is also a better alternative than selling. Selling takes time. It’s just stuff. You can always replace them later with the $1200 saved yearly.

The information you provided will be very helpful to many. As far as the storage unit, however, that is the one expense that simply doesn't make sense.. After several months paying for storage you would have paid the cost of a new washer and dryer. Why not sell them and recoup some money from that, put it aside with the money you save from the monthly storage fees and buy a w/d set when the need arises again. That would make so much more financial sense.

Healthy people need health insurance in case of something catastrophic. Even a broken ankle could set you back five figures and you won’t get a good enough payment plan without the possibility of having to stretch that out for years. That car insurance is crazy! I know a lot of it is based on your address too. I’m paying $150/month with a clean driving record. It was less than half that when I lived in that tiny house in the middle of nowhere last year. I hate my storage unit expense too… I’m fairly sure I’m going to just completely clear mine out within the next few months and get rid of it. That’s amazing that your cost of living is under $1000/month! It opens up so many options for income and saving money. If you want somewhere out west with tons of car camping and cheap gas, check out New Mexico. It was an amazing place to visit when I was there last year.
@simmpleenough11 ай бұрын
I think the address plays a part in it, too. I remember calling my insurance company a while back and telling the rep I was going to change my address. The rep kept hinting to me that my rate might increase and he kept making sure I really wanted to change it. He sounded so worried about my decision, lol. I’m definitely gonna clear my storage unit out this year. I’m so tired of them increasing their rates. Thanks for the tip on New Mexico! I’ll be going there, for sure.

I'm loving it, so far! I can't eat a ton of soy products, so it's nice to have another option to mix in with the regular tofu and tempeh I eat.

Just a thought about the storage unit…if a washer costs, let’s say, $400 and a dryer $400, then in 8 months of not paying for a storage unit you can buy a washer and dryer. If you are planning to live in your vehicle for more than 8 months it may be worth selling the washer and dryer, giving up the storage unit, and if and when the time comes buying a washer and dryer. It may be cheaper in the long run. Just a friendly suggestion - I’m not “telling” you what to do. 😁

I agree and am planning to sell just about everything in that unit so I can start putting that money in my savings!

Be careful. You NEVER know when you might get very sick. It happened to me and had to be hospitalized and have surgery unless I would have died. I was 29 at the time and very healthy. $70,000 bill. Today's prices? I'm guessing $100,000. I thought like you did. :(
@lenaprice623911 ай бұрын
Did the hospital reduce the bill, or were you on the hook for the full amount?
@simmpleenough11 ай бұрын
I agree with you. I hope to be in a financial position where I can afford health insurance in the near future. I just legitimately cannot afford it right now and I never qualify for the cheap options.

The storage unit is a no brainer! Sell that stuff and put proceed money in to a HYSA emergency fund plus the storage fee money and don't look back.

20:20 how much does it cost to get a new washer/dryer? within a year you're paying more on storage than the cost to buy a new set...?
@simmpleenough4 ай бұрын
I was able to store them both in my parent’s shed. I got rid of that unit shortly after posting this video 🙌🏾

When i start van life I'm going to live at Quartsite land in Arizona!! Yes ma'am that's fine with me, cause that's my goal to be self sufficient and self contained about everything I do and use in my rv or van or bus... haven't quite made up my mind yet but I'll have money when i move there. If you fail to plan, then plan to fail..and i don't plan on failing. I'm not traveling all over the place either I'm trying to save living on BLM land simple as that. My washing machine stopped working where I'm living at and i purchased a portable washing machine so if i decide to move away in the near future i can literally pick it up and take it with me all by myself, don't have to hire help to take it out of the home and you can put it on a bus or use it in a van or rv, so what I'm doing is looking at videos and deciding on what I'm going to have already to put in a van if i needed a place to stay right now off grid immediately. But i think if you could get a big cargo van you could put a portable washer in your van, and a portable ninja dryer in your van and that would eliminate storage bill, sell those big bulky items. I'd build my own shower and toilet in the van, i currently have the Serene portable utility sink to wash my hands and items when i go places to camp or picnic, i could buy the flushable toilet that comes with it if i choose to, I don't have one, but if i decide to go anywhere there's no bathroom then I'll order it, but that's what I would put in my van, so I'm already ready for van life today. But you need a cargo van for sure and live at Quartsite and you'll start saving up big time. I also have Coleman stove and butane stoves like you're using because I've lost electricity many times where i live and i have a portable refrigerator/freezer that i can run off solar panels. I have two portable power stations called Nature's Generator Elite and i can power anything with them and a gas generator. As far as a shower I'd put up a portable shower that I'd put together, i already have the Ivation shower spray accessory so I'm still figuring this one out, but it'll be portable for sure, I've been on line trying to find a drain pan with a hose so that i can have the water draining on the ground while I'm showering inside my vehicle, not outside my vehicle..so I'm still working on that solution but I'll figure it out, but no gym membership for me, like i said I'll be totally self contained and self sufficient in everyway.😊 My answer to you is Get a much bigger vehicle to live in so that you can be totally self sufficient, then you could incorporate these items that you need to be in your vehicle and don't have to go and pay money to use these items outside your vehicle. You're halfway there since you cook in your vehicle already, you just need the ability to shower, wash clothes and use restroom facilities in your vehicle, that's why i said you need a big van to accommodate all that....a really big van.... because everyone knows this one saying that's true to all of us...Life is what you make it.!!!!🥂Cheers

What cellphone service carrier do you use? I’m interested in the hotspot data plan.
@simmpleenough11 ай бұрын
Verizon. I don’t know the name of the plan, but they have 3 plan options and I got the third option with the most hotspot. I think a Verizon rep recently told me they slightly increased the price of that plan, but definitely check into it.

You can also make tofu out of your banana peels. I also make pork less BBQ sandwiches out of them too Also you should sell your washer and dryer. With tge money you are paying for your storage room, by the time you get your land etc. you would be able to buy 4 washers and dryers. it doesn't make sense to keep them. BTW, my monthly expenses are $400/mo.

if you get tired of frozen veggies, you can try steaming. you can steam a whole butternut squash in 20 minutes (put some in the blender and save it in your freezer. much fresher than the frozen veggies from the store.) i steam everything right now, from broccoli to potatoes, you can even steam fresh fish. Family Dollar has some inexpensive steamer trays. you can always freeze the extra.
