You've stumbled on the secret plot of season 1 - the importance of sex education. Women were controlled by being kept in ignorance of how their own bodies worked. Your mom would give you a quick chat right before you got married and then you were suddenly expected to go make babies immediately, but don't dare do anything before you get married.

Well it wasn't modern times. If a woman got pregnant before marriage, then nobody wanted to marry them, which would then mean they cannot connect their family to anyone else, which means less power. For men, if they married someone who already had kids or wasn't chaste, then their whole family line would be in question. It's bad for both parties.

@@LiaaaaaaaaAAAAAHH Anthony is thinking that since Simone does not want to marry or have children then why the hell is he courting his sister? In addition, he knows that Simone is a "rake" and has had other women so is worried that Simone is not honorable in his intentions with his sister. But then he is like, why would my best friend betray me like that? Basically, he is just super confused and obviously for good reason given the whole thing is a ruse. Lastly, as the head of household he has to protect his sisters reputation because if it is ruined it will affect the entire household's marriage prospects/reputation (mostly the sisters).While part of his desire is to help his sister is out of brotherly love another large part is due to his duty as the head of household which he takes very seriously.

The societal rules can be SUPER confusing, but basically they boil down to this: 1. Polite men and women can’t touch, beyond walking arm-in-arm or dancing, while being chaperoned, unless they are married (and even then don’t do it in public). To be seen ALONE with someone of the opposite sex is enough for it to be _Scandal!_ Unpolite people are shunned from society. 2. It’s old money vs new money vs no money. Titles- Lordships, Viscount, Duke, etc.- are highly coveted. They come with land money and proximity to the crown. 3. Women can’t work or own property (they pretty much are property 😬). They are expected to be cared for by their fathers then their husbands. Obviously there ARE working women ie. shop owners, governesses (teachers/nannies), servants, writers, etc. But they are looked down upon, and not in polite society. 4. Men get money (a dowry) from the woman’s family when they marry- so if you don’t have a dowry you may not marry. 5. Spinsters are unmarried women over like ~25 y/o and unless you’re rich, it’s pretty bad. Widows rarely remarry. 6. Reputation = credit. If you have a bad rep, people will avoid you and not do business with you.
@DelGuy032 жыл бұрын
In fact the story takes its liberties here and there with manners and loosens things up a bit compared to the reality. For instance addressing a person of the opposite sex by their first name, if you weren't related, was thoroughly improper. Not until you're married (and sometimes not even then, like the parents in Jane Austen who address each other as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet). Eloise smoking a cigarette is another example, of course. But of course the series is having fun with telling a period story with modern touches here and there.
@irisblue23322 жыл бұрын
And to add onto #1, the waltz was new at the time and considered somewhat scandalous because the partners danced closer together and stayed as a couple throughout the dance instead of moving through different patterns like you saw Daphne and Simon earlier. Not only that, but if a couple danced together more than twice it was like declaring they were betrothed. Between the rules of behavior and limits to what was considered acceptable topics of conversation, here were not many ways in polite society for a couple to actually get to know each other, so they often ended up engaged to near-strangers in semi-arranged matches based on economics and influence, rather than love.

Dowries are often set up to be money for the wife so she has something if things go south or spending money or something to settle on her children. This is because fathers knew there could be issues because women were no longer separate legal persons once married. Single women could own property, as you note, but difficult for an upper class woman at times.
@randi89842 жыл бұрын
The ruined reputation thing is a common theme in many dramas set in this time period. It appears to do with modesty and morals and blah blah but it was really about the money(inheritance). You had to make sure there was no question about the legitimacy of your heir. And unfortunately women are the ones who carry the child so they have the burden of being "pure". Otherwise if she is a lady known to get around, how could anyone be sure that the child in line to inherit was legitimate or not. TLDR: "The point of marriage in the aristocracy is to produce a legitimate heir, so if there is any question abut the legitimacy of the person who is inheriting that estate, it throws the whole idea into disarray"
@xejelah2 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing the part where they want virgins. It's not just about heirs. It's about being the first. As Berbrook put it "loose and damaged". They're paying for new coochie who will then be brood mare which is why he compared her to buying a horse.
@thelegacyofgaming292810 ай бұрын
To be fair, even today, men will generally avoid marrying a woman with kids, it is more a biological instinct than anything, not a negative one either, as it helps to protect the man from raising another's children. Also, the reason they wanted virgin women was because those women could grow to love them rather than have someone before them who they already loved, which would create issues in the household and lead to infidelity.

Something to note, in this specific time period, unmarried women were intentionally kept in the dark about how children are made and often were not told at all until after becoming pregnant. Meaning, Penelope Eloise and Daphne do not know how babies are made, other than that marriage is a requirement. Very dark feature of this show, and unfortunately a reality of those times.

@@kiwi9445Anthony feels responsible for his family, and as Daphne also said - her marriage will have impact on the prospects her younger sisters will have, so it’s important for her to have a good match. Anthony is both overprotective of Daphne, but he’s also being overzealous about the reputation of his family: can’t marry that one, he’s of dubious parentage and you wouldn’t want to get involved in that potential scandal. That one has unpaid debts that show he’s unresponsible and might have money problems. That one’s a second son, he’s a decent pick but we need an excellent one for the reputation of our family, etc etc. He goes too far with it but I do think it comes from a place of care. Then his mother tells him that “if [his father] were here Daphne would already be married” and he overcorrects. He checks Berbrooke’s background, and he doesn’t find anything that would glaringly make him a bad choice, and so, feeling the pressure of “your father would have done this way better”, he promises Daphne to him. (However, note how as soon as he learns that Berbrooke tried to assault Daphne, he immediately breaks off that engagement)

I haven’t seen a comment about him having a bastard and what that means. It wasn’t uncommon for a man to have a bastard ( normally from a kept mistresses (kept was like what the opera singer was to Anthony, he payed for her housing and mean basically.) but it was 100% expected he would provide and educate the child. Him just sending the maid into the unknown was basically the worst thing a man could do. The best men would admit to the public the knowledge of a bastard taking a hit on their own reputation but allowing the bastard to inherit some money which could set them up to either a good job, or if female, a good dowry which would let them marry into the middle class.

Keep in mind that Julia Quinn set her books in the Regency period amidst the general rules of the period, but her characters are still modern in sentiment. If you read a Regency romance written in 1940s or '50s, they're set in the time period, but reflect the values of the time they were written. This TV adaptation takes books written in the 1990s and made changes that fit them in 2020s--while still set against the background of the early 19th century. TL;DR--hold any ideas that "this is what it was like back then" loosely.

Yea, almost nobody had the mindset of Eloise back then, because their was no reason to. Even though society was the way it was, the rich folks didn't have anything to complain about, since all of their lives are easy. The Queen snorts snuff, which is pulverized or powdered tobacco, and destroys your body faster than smoking or chew. Those titles are handed out by the Crown. You do not get to decide not to inherit. The title includes ancestral estates, which are worked by hundreds of farmers, workers that live on those ancestral lands. Holding that title means holding the livelihoods of all of those people in your hands. If you do not manage your estates properly, real people suffer. If one does not produce an heir, the title/ lands/ etc will pass to the closest male relative upon one’s death. If there are no relatives, the title and lands revert to the Crown. A title also means a seat in the House of Lords, sort of their version of the Senate. Probably already mentioned, the Bridgerton kids are named alphabetically, oldest to youngest.

Yes, girls (boys too, on occasion!) stayed ignorant of how babies are made, until they got a rude awakening when they married (either the mother might have a "talk" with her the night before, or the bride would find out from her husband on her wedding night). The exceptions, as Benedict alluded, were people who lived in the country and saw how farm animals behaved. Uncontrollable bleeding after childbirth is still something that has to be watched out for. We have better safety procedures and preparation in place now, so its frequency is way down compared to earlier times.

Fun facts, titles are everything! King, Prince, Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron, Knight (Ser) That is their decending order. So Simon is the top of the order for the nobility, he just isn't royalty. And a title cannot be given away, except if the line dies out and reverts back to the crown and they redesignate the land and titles to someone else. And women did not inherit, the oldest son. If there are no sons born to an aristocrat they find the next born male, usually a cousin that would take over the family. And usually all the land, houses, money, etc is entailed and goes with the title.

33:11 In the British system for hereditary titles (especially in this instance for being a Duke) and estates, there is literally no legal option about becoming "x" -- you _are_ Duke such-and-such, whether you want it or not. (Hastings only "option" in that context is that he can choose to squander all the money he inherited, and/or let the estate lands and various buildings be sold off or left to ruin, but he very literally has no legal option as to whether to be Duke or not: he became such at the moment of his father's death.) Only the Monarch (King or Queen) has the option of abdication.

A point to remember about them not knowing how babies are made is that during those times it wasn't proper or socially acceptable for a young lady especially one of high social standing to know about how babies are made. Women of those times weren't allowed to talk about or even know what happened between a husband and wife in the "bedroom" so to speak. The topic was concidered "taboo" and definitely not polite conversation of that time. A woman of high society knowing these things would have been concidered spoiled goods and would have likily had her reputation ruined.
@LadyGreensleeves332 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the big rule of thumb here is women - most specifically 'ladies' - higher class girls are kept innocent and in the dark about everything related to sex - in fact, they don't know what sex is, strictly speaking, really, in its entirety or how babies are made. Or at least they aren't 'supposed to' - you had to play stupid, more or less, though many actually were kept that way deliberately. You can't be alone with a man unless you're chaperoned outside of marriage, so essentially your reputation is in the toilet from the most innane things. Men, on the other hand, are encouraged to go kind of explore their options so that they have their shit together before settling down. It was very... well, rediculous. What happened with Marina is extra annoying because her parents discovered she was pregnant outside of marriage, and just tried to marry her off quickly, so that whoever she wed would think they were the father and it would cover up the scandal. Anthony has been told, point blank, that the Duke doesn't want to marry so he thinks he's just kind of toying with his sister. He has reason to be suspicious, but at the same time he's definitely going about it wrong.

You guys were talking over the explanation. He threatened to tell everyone that she was on the dark walk with him. At that time, a young lady's reputation was everything. That story, though a lie, would have ruined Daphne and her family. So Daphne would have had no choice but to marry him.

Sexual education was not a thing during that time, that's why Eloise and Penelope, along with the majority of the ladies, know almost nothing until the marriage. The men knew much more 'cause they would go to school, while women couldn't. At least that's what I think 🤔

Also sometimes men would be encouraged to be a rake at brothels and "get it out of their system" before getting married.

The mom creates the Nigel problem by pressuring Antony to marry off Daphne in the first episode. Then she got the credit for fixing the problem she created and blaming Antony for it. I think she wants the best for her kids but I don’t think she uses the crazy amount of power she has in a responsible way. Interesting show and I’m curious to see what y’all think as the show goes on but I think she’s an inadvertent antagonist in some ways

I read that in that time, girls in higher classes were completely ignorant about sex until marriage. Also Daphne being caught alone in the garden with Lord Burbrooke would have compromised her “innocence” and ruined her value as a potential bride.

Love this reaction!!!! You definitely have to watch the second season because it'll be fun to watch your opinions of Anthony change.

24:59 oh that was defiantly a hard ass drug. I dont recall which Chinese dynasty it was but there was a period in which there was a strong fight against opium and that i believe was before or during this time. Regardless of where people are they will find a way to get high, drunk, and a smoke.

It was not considered proper for unmarried women of "society" to know about the "birds and the bees."

Actually Simon didn’t really help. He did in the short term but not the long term. Burberuck had too much of an ego and was also delusional and refused to take no for an answer which was evident Fr the beginning. So Simon saying what he did just made Burberuck dig in his heels and REFUSE to back down. Sometimes if u handle guys like him w kid gloves and stroke their ego u can get them to back off. But the way Simon approached it it made him dig in his heels and made it more difficult to get away Fr him.

He literally can't get rid of the Dukedom. The only way for him to lose it is to not have a son, or have a daughter.

When i watch period dramas something that always intrigues me how the collective intelligence of the era. When Eloise asks how an unmarried woman is able to have a child without a husband I burst laughing. Through the show we learn how IGNORANT these poor girls are right up until the wedding night. They are whats known as "Daughters In a Box" completely ignorant to the carnal passions or even HOW children are made until their mothers TRY to explain it in the most uncomfortable way imaginable.

I have SO MANY things that I'm bursting to say, and I can't until we get to the later episodes!

The difference is that it's easier for Benedict to find something more. I wouldn't say it's impossible for Eloise, but it's harder. I don't see the show allowing her to be like Mary Wollstonecraft or George Eliot, although that would be interesting.

Basically what I'm assuming happened with Burbuke and the marriage license is that because he has a title and money, he was able to get an archbishop to get a special marriage license. He was counting on the Bridgertons not challenging him due to society norms and because he could question Daphne's honor, ruin her chances and the rest of her family and he'd be the only one left.

Women, well ladies of the nobility were kept ignorant of any bedroom matters. They usually were not told about relations until their wedding day and sometimes not even then they just had a big surprise on their wedding night.

YESSSS ANOTHER FAYAH CINTENT FROM MY FAVORITE REACTORS!!! I am late because i have been busy. But here I ammmm. Hope you can read my comments for more info. Fun Fact: In case you didn't know, the bridgerton kids were named alphabetically from oldest to youngest. They are 7 so A-H. This series is just amazing. It was based on a novel and the novel had 9(i think) books and has the story of all the bridgertons. Daphne being in the first one and entitled The Duke And I. 2nd Book is Anthony's story (The Viscount who loved me), 3rd will be Benedict (I think the series will be released in this year) 4th will be Colin and Pen and 5th will be Eloise, 6th will be Franchesca, 7th will be Hyacinth and 8th will be Gregory. The 9th is entitled Bridgerton Happy Ever After. The books are amazing just as the series is. I love everything about this show and novel. Its amazing to see the Bridgerton's named from A-H in the order. Aint it? Loved your reaction as alwaysss!!! Keep grinding!

so to start its not just that when a girl is with a guy she is more desirable (that's part of it) but also that he is a duke which is really high standing, higher than any of the other men so to the other men "if a man with that high of a standing deems her worthy so should I" type stuff lmao, also yes girls in this time period do not know how babies are made its a big thing this season, that is not tobacco my friends

Proper Ladies in those days were not told about sex or how children are made because it’s considered improper and unladylike for women to know or talk about it. Daphne doesn’t know either. Most women don’t find out until their wedding night. They are just thrown into the deep end completely unprepared.

The 1800s is only the nineteenth century. I think this is the eighteenth or very early nineteenth century, not that long ago in English history.
