I have two of these units in my home, installed about 5 years ago. I have had to replace these seals at least 5 times in each toilet. All the seals I've seen are blue. All failed by developing water filled blisters on the seal surfaces, preventing the seals from preventing water from seeping past them. This is an obvious problem with the manufacturer of the seals, or an inappropriate material used in the manufacture of the seals. Maybe the white seals are in improved product- as I said, I have never seen them in stores, and replacements sent to me by American Standard have all been the blue seals. American Standard needs to step up and cure this problem with their seals. It's disappointing to buy a premium fixture and have to replace seals so frequently. I never experienced such failures in the past with cheap store brand toilets from Lowes or Home Depot. The Champion 4 is a good product and sells at a rather premium price. Frequent seal failure is not acceptable for this otherwise quality fixture.

My replacement seals are more clear than white, have had them for about 2 years, and one has recently started leaking.

I just replaced one of my two toilets with a white one and only lasted a couple days and is leaking worst than the old blue one. Ordered 3 of these kits from Home Depot. Going to find another supplier and take the 2 remaining kits back. At 10 bucks a pop, replacing hem every other day, I might as well buy another toilet and shun American Standard.

At my wits end!! I replaced the American Standard valve seal with the same (American Standard Model # 7301111-0070AP), I picked it up at the plumbing supply house. It's red not clear nor blue, and comes with the O-ring for the nut. Watched a bunch of videos on it. Installed, kept running profusely. Watched your video about lining up the notches (none of the other videos said to do that), redid it, was fine. Shortened the chain so that's it's straight w no overlap, running again. Am HOPING it's just the chain that needs loosening? Toilet is 5 yrs old. Also noticed the water going way up high over the fill tube and then dropping to where it should be. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

Thanks for your demonstration. Looks easy enough so away I go to get the parts. We came back from vacation to find that the toilet was leaking a calculated 50 litres a day with a hundred phantom flushes every 24 hours. Just developed all of a sudden.

@@TightWadDIY I did have a crazy waterbill - so much that the utility company notified me that something was wrong. Just repaired it in ten minutes, thanks to your detailed video. Had to gently use pliers to twist off the wing nut though as it was too stuck to move by hand. Once again, thank you so much for your videos. They make everything so easy. Cheers from Cochrane, Ontario Canada.

My American Standard flapper is green, but does not have the black tab to loosen and tighten. The entire green flapper is threaded and screws onto a black post that sticks up under it. The new gasket seal is the same. But there is no small red washer seal as shown. Very frustrating that there is a constant trickle of water causing my well pump to click on and off. The toilet is only 8 months old.

A mountain out of a mole hill. Just replaced this seal in the lavatory in my church, you don't even need to turn off the water supply if you can work rapidly or loop a zip tie over the float to hold it up. The great seal debate stems from the blue die in the original seal not being happy with certain types of water around the country. AS has rolled out a new version that should solve most every issue. I have had the original blue one at my home last for 6 years, and still working, must be liking the water at my home.

Enjoyed this video however the nut on the top of the valve is very tight and I cannot loosen it with my fingers. Is it safe to try to put a wrench on it or would you suggest a different method? TIA
@ChrisSmith-vq5ps

If you pull horizontally on the edge of the gasket, you should be able to pull it out enough to lift it over the top clamshell. With it removed there is mush less pressure on the nut and it will not bump into the stops as you unscrew it. When I replaced mine I stopped tightening after the 3rd click on those bumps. You can hear those at about the 1 minute mark as the nut was unscrewed.

New gasket helped a lot, but didn't solve a slow leak completely. Out of frustration, I bought a SECOND gasket and paired it up with the other, making it TWO gaskets thick. NO MORE LEAKS!!!!

I also have two of these commodes in my home. I installed them 5.5 years ago. About six months ago the one used most often( in the bath my wife uses mostly) started the ghost leaking. After her nagging about it leaking I finally decided she was right and checked you video. Ordered a three pack of the rings & o-rings and today set my I pad on the toilet seat so I could watch as I worked. Five minutes later I had it fixed! Thank you for the lesson.🎉

Korky also makes a replacement gasket set. When you are really tired of messing with it, NuFlush makes an "Upgrade Flush Valve" which gets rid of the idiot float and tall valve seat, and returns it to an old-fashioned flapper valve. Its around $55.00 with shipping, but I've about all I can stand with mine.

@@TightWadDIY luckily it should be a one time replacement. It replaces the elevated flapper tube and overflow with one like an old-fashioned toilet and a standard flapper valve. Probably also makes it a 3 gallon flush.

His video is not current. New models don't have the unscrew type of cap shown in the video, so the new seals AMS sent are useless. You need to get a new flush valve system from AMS, and either replace it yourself or pay a plumber to install. If AMS doesn't make good quickly I can see a class action lawsuit coming, since I can't be the only one having this problem, they've probably known about for several years, and keep knowingly selling defective toilets and other products.

I got tired of chasing after this problem. Gasket fix didn't make much difference. It's just a poorly designed flush valve. Period. Korky makes a really nice flush valve kit that replaces this crappy one with a nice old fashioned flapper and a superior tank to bowl seal that won't seep water into the bowl causing the ghost flushing and high water consumption.

Best thing to do is replace with a TOTO toilet and never buy a Champion product, ever. These DIY vids are helpful, but for every DIYer, there's 12 people who called a plumber and paid $150 to replace that gasket, and they'll call again in 2 yrs.
