Simple Item Defragmenter

Just a small contraption to group items by type and reduce clutter in your storage systems. It can also function as a pre-sort step to make sorting systems more efficient.

@@metamilo I don't understand what this exactly does, I don't see what you'd lose by just throwing this into an item sorter without doing the defrag thing

@@mrolson0603 It unloads a chest or inventory in such a way that all the items of one type are output together. This allows you to do some cool optimizations later in the item pipeline. For example, if you're filling shulker boxes with the contents of the input chest, then this will make sure that those shulkers are somewhat organized.

This works on Bedrock by simply exchanging the note blocks for redstone lanterns. Another awesome piece of tech, very well done.

Just built it and it work in 1.17+! For whatever reason I couldn’t get raps design to work but this is phenomenal and compact!

yea, his fills a little different need and is tileable. This one is tiny and simple to build/remember, but isn't tileable.

I actually got it even smaller after this video, but the smaller version isn't silent. I got rid of that dangling hopper at the back by turning it to the side under the composter, then I used a quasi powered piston to create the clock.

Set up an item filter put a different type of item on top and throw the item which you put in the sorter

Technically you don't need this if you aren't sending items in batches but in my case I was sending them in batches so I put this In my input system

Is there anyway you could make the opposite of this? For example if I put a selection of items in a chest and I want them coming out randomly out of order.

That's an interesting challenge. Droppers will output items randomly, but they only have 9 slots instead of 27.

So compared to just a hopper the advantage is that multiple fragmented stacks of one item land next to each other in the output chest? (excluding non stackables)

Yeah, which means they should take up less space because you won't have as many partial stacks in your storage. However, it's also a very useful component in larger, more complex, item management systems which you'll see in my next video.

@@metamilo well, just a hopper would also reduce the amount of space since it would try to complete stacks in the output chest.

@@istoOi yes, but that requires that the hopper is both the first and last step between the input and the output. With this it only has to be the first. Also, it will group the stacks together for a more organized (defragmented) feel.

Is it possible to increase the gap between item types somehow with this design?

Maybe. I tried and couldn't find a simple solution without redesigning the whole thing. I didn't spend too much time on it though, so yeah, it might be possible.
