As a career mechanic (since back in the stone age '87) I'm also a gen1 R8 v8 owner. I'm immensely impressed with the level of knowledge Ricky has. Mechanical knowledge & ability is one thing, but the complexity of modern day wiring systems is other level. It's hard to imagine the nuclear leap since back in the day when I worked on Cavalier, Omega, Calibra etc. it's very hard keeping up-to-date with the rapid change in technology. As a self-employed mechanic I remain immensely impressed with Ricky. He's a genuine rarity within the trade.

I think it is most likely some sort of 3rd party hardware spliced into the wiring. I would also note ohm testing lets you know at least 1 single strand of copper wire is still there.... I would suggest to load test it. Pull /9 and /19 out of the J533 and short them together. At the T16a, jumper /16 to /6. So now T16a/14 should have battery voltage. Load test T16a/14 for voltage drop, I would suggest using something like the 180 LOADpro for this. Regards.

Always the danger of belling wires out with a multimeter...you may have low resistance with zero current flow but much higher resistance when you actually attempt to flow current, even if its a low current in the low mA range. Test lights are exactly what is required to test actual continuity. Alternatively you could scope the actual raw CAN signal & you'd see the signal dissappear when you plug the tester in. Easy once you've seen it before!

Hey Ricky you need to test the cables with a 1000volt Mega meter Your multi meter testing on ohms can show continuity but under load the cable may be braking down This is probably why one system can read ok and the other can’t The one that can’t is probably putting load on the cable and the slight change in resistance is enough to stop your system working
@MikeLloyd-z2sАй бұрын
Came here to say this, it’s probably a slight break or a short to earth or short across to another wire in the loom that a multimeter won’t show, but a megger will find. Just make sure before you press ‘play’ on the megger that you are not connected to anything other than the actual wires, because otherwise it will fry every module on the car! 😳😳🤬

@Google_Is_EvilАй бұрын
CAN bus is not "redundant" but uses a differential signal, which is why the wires are twisted in the wiring loom. When you have magnetic interference on them, both wires get the same magnetic field and because the actual signals are opposite of each other, the magnetic interference gets cancelled out. This is why it is so much more reliable, not because it is two wires carrying "the same signals. LIN bus is slower than CAN and certainly not more advanced. What is more advanced is Ethernet that still uses twisted wires or optical fibers to transfer the signals. Why ODIS wouldn't communicate? I wouldn't be surprised if it won't do a fallback to KWP2000 that uses pin 7 on the OBD connector and VCDS will do that, resulting in the symptoms you were experiencing. I know you have 1001 things to do but if you would be more efficient using your PicoScope you would have been able to figure this out in 30 minutes or less. Spending time on learning more car electronic diagnostics is a hit and miss if you don't have to do this very often, so the occasional day and a half on a "simple problem" is probably more time efficient for you than training yourself on doing this sort of diags.

Tracing wires is the pits... Honestly, you could just let it go back and say "I've done all I could" and he would've kept going from shop to shop. Probably spend way more money than you'd've charged him for a day and a half of work. Kinda how I'd've looked at it. The resistance theory might be the one, although not really a big amount of current is going down those wires it would have been interesting to do a volt drop measurement on each CAN wires with either your VAS or VCDS dongle connected, or to have back probed T16 and see what the CAN signals looked like. Or the answer from ODIS support would be "make sure you're running the latest ODIS version" :D

Most garages would charge that extra labour (ref undertray bolts and canbus fault finding) in fact an independent "vw" specialist local to me somehow snapped off a caliper bolt on my friends S3 and charged him to drill the bolt out, re-tap the whole and replace the bolt (car went in for new disks, pads and fluid). Two days prior to a track weekend in Spa.

Possibly one of the can wires is down to a few strands and is dropping voltage, would be interesting to scope them and see if you have corrupted signal….. very strange the VCDS is fine and ODIS drops out. Very good find by the way!
@zgriffiin123Ай бұрын
Definitely,, scoping it would be the next step to see if one of the CAN lines is the issue. As others have said, it could be leaky insulation when under load (though this would be less likely on a signal level wire) or noise is being injected into the signal that the reader is less tolerant too (though that is also odd and both wires are typically subjected to the same noise and as you point out , differential vs referenced to ground). Either way, a scope on both lines, under different conditions (the different readers connected, not connected, jump wires in or out), would at least confirm a difference and may point to the cause.

Great find, had similar with trailing cables on lifts. They test ok and it shows communication but fails as soon and anything demanding is put down them. We test the boards by removing them from the lift car and use short cables to wire it to the main board. I’d say that one of them cables has been caught or pulled when it was fitted. You would need way more sensitive equipment milli-ohm meter to record it. Also love a bit of VCDS action as it’s saved a small fortune on my parents Continental GT. Without looking into specifics, from similar experience in computer network signalling, I'd guess that the CANbus signalling is differential and looking for a nominal voltage between the low/high signals. The tolerance of what that nominal voltage diff is probably a little more lax in the transceiver for VCDS, versus that which the ODIS systems transceiver expects and/or its a little more tolerant of phase shift in the signals (hence the clocking of the rising/falling points). When you re-wired, your "cleaner" lines put you back in the "eye" of the transceiver, and the more sensitive (strict adherent to spec?) transceiver now is happy with the signal. We used to see so many of these types of issues in fiber transmissions where the optical transceivers at each end might be super-sensitive such that mixing manufacturers would cause probs, even though all were nominally supplied and cert'ed to the same standards. Never fun in the moment, but super-satisfying to overcome eventually, as long as the customer is not breathing down your neck at the time! Great jobs Ricky and more importantly, good on you for a great practical example and exposition of troubleshooting modern cars … good luck to anyone finding a chain/franchise mechanic (even manufacturer cert'ed) who would be able or given time to do this kind of work.

I've not see this on cars but I work in electronics sometimes wires test good with a meter but the strands of wire are broken inside!, say it's 7/0.2 (7 strands of 0.2 copper wire) 6 strands of wire are broken and only one strand is making the connection or all of them are broken and when the wire is in a certain place it's making a connection until you bend the wire which opens up the wire strands inside the plastic insulator. Give the terminals a tug with some pin nose pliers and see if one of them comes away, if not it's along the wire somewhere else. Their must be a intermitant break or open along one of those wires.

IR testing a cable doesn’t always prove a broken conductor. The “issue of testing” needs to be supplied a power source, in the typical form of Megger tester on at secondary level use a process meter to supply Amperage to it. If the wires break but have one or two strands still continuous, you can end up with a fault where your resistance and continuity check ok but when a load is applied the wires get hot and the resistance climbs quickly, I would guess the one system is more sensitive (draws a higher load) than the other.

I’d say something is possibly wired in on those lines like a tracker ect, either that or a volt drop on the wire really would need to see a scope pattern on the original lines to know more. Resistance measurement only proves the lines not open but doesn’t mean it’s good.
@clumhainАй бұрын
some systems do want to see a resistance within a certain value or just will not work, there is a safety edge on a door of equipment i work on and ostensibly if you hit the safety edge you break a contact and alarm, but actually bridging out the safety edge will not work as it seeks resistance in a certain range to avoid such tactics. Don't know why it would be so in the car situation though...

As much as you want to be fair to the customers, you need to be fair to yourself, your family and your Staff. You have put too much into learning your trade, equipping your workshop and hiring the best people. And giving away hours of your time is going to have a knock on effect to all those around you. There’s a reason you are so busy Rick and that’s because people trust you. So if a job gives you unforeseen problems, the minimums you should be charging the customer is Trade or at a real push-Cost to you. Don’t sell yourself cheap Rick, It doesn’t work!
