Carson- I have listened to literally dozens of covers of this song. Many, many of them are absolutely unlistenable, and many are by singers trying to emulate Dylan, which is a shame, because, as this video shows, it's a very melodic song if given a chance. Yours is EASILY the finest cover of this beautiful, touching song. You have a fine voice, which is evident on many of the covers I've seen with you and Josh.

Ryan Taylor I basically never pre-record audio...one, because I feel it would undermine the “you’re sitting here listening to me play” immediacy I like about my videos, and two, because it’s honestly harder to nail than just doing the damn thing live, especially if I’m just working with vox and guitar, hah! But seriously, I don’t blame you for thinking so-some aspects, like reverb and such, obviously don’t match the outdoor setting, but I’m a sucker for plate verb, so I included it anyway. There are also tricky tracks like “Take It Easy”, where I’m playing a G shape, but tuned down, so that it sounds like an E or something, and instances where I’ve dubbed in, like, one chord to mask a major flub (meaning there might be a half-second where my playing doesn’t match the video). But still-it’s pretty dang live if I can help it.

They sat together in the park As the evening sky grew dark She looked at him and he felt a spark Tingle to his bones 'Twas then he felt alone And wished that he'd gone straight And watched out for a simple twist of fate They walked along by the old canal A little confused, I remember well And stopped into a strange hotel With a neon burnin' bright He felt the heat of the night Hit him like a freight train Moving with a simple twist of fate A saxophone someplace far-off played As she was walkin' on by the arcade As the light burst through a beat-up shade Where he was waking up She dropped a coin into the cup Of a blind man at the gate And forgot about a simple twist of fate He woke up, the room was bare He didn't see her anywhere He told himself he didn't care Pushed the window open wide Felt an emptiness inside To which he just could not relate Brought on by a simple twist of fate He hears the ticking of the clocks And walks along with a parrot that talks Hunts her down by the waterfront docks Where the sailors all come in Maybe she'll pick him out again How long must he wait? One more time, for a simple twist of fate People tell me it's a sin To know and feel too much within I still believe she was my twin But I lost the ring She was born in spring But I was born too late Blame it on a simple twist of fate

This is a beautiful performance. I especially like the moment at 2:08 where Carson uses the "stop" in the lyric as a break-down moment and then calmly scratches himself until it's time to start playing again. Such calm! I've watched it a 100 times trying to cover Carson here. For the guitar players, here's what I think is happening: everything's tuned down 1/2 a step and then the following chord progression: E - E - Emaj7 - Emaj7 - E7 - E7 - Asus2 - Asus2 - Amin-add2 - Amin-add2 - | E - Emaj7 | - F#min7 - E -F#min7.

I really appreciate you posting this. I have been trying to figure this out myself. I figured it had to be alternative tuning somehow, but I couldn't get a handle on it. Also, I'm not sure why it matters, as it would be difficult to do the song this much justice. But that's the effect these guys have on me - they make me want to practice and try to emulate just a fraction of their talent.

You obviously know the guitar, so I wanted to ask this question, which may sound stupid but I don't know anything about the instrument and It's always bugged me. When guitarists are pressing the strings on the neck of the guitar to change the chords, sometimes their hand will be near the tuning pegs and sometimes near the sound hole depending on what chord is needed. Sometimes they need to change the chords rapidly from one end to the other which results in a squeak when the fingers slide along the length of the strings. Can't anything be done about this? That squeak sounds horrible and to me, ruins the tune.

@@donmiller2908 Man this is part of the character of a guitar, all these casual peripheral sounds from the instrument. In pop music nowadays they'll often be edited out but in my opinion it's a sweet part of the whole, physical expression of playing a guitar. Learn to love these quirks and chance squeals from her.
@raindog2262
@raindog2262 4 жыл бұрын
@@donmiller2908 Also as you become more practiced on the guitar, you'll find the squeaks hopefully diminish because your hand speed will increase enough so that rather than slid into or out of a chord shape, you'll come straight off the neck and then straight down. Well, that's the plan anyway. Takes practice but it can be done.

That was great, man! The "vocal character" sure is prominent. If I didn't know of this song I would believe that it were your own. The sudden halt after the word "stopped" was so clever as was the gloomy drop on the word "anywhere" in the line "He didn't see her anywhere..". This is awe inspiring. Thanks for this video! You're doing something special

My first reaction was : another one not tuning to an open D, this is gonna sound flat. And then, the magic started. Dylan’s original already sent shivers down my neck, but yours nearly brought me to tears. That song was my best buddy’s favorite, he passed away 12 years ago.

I've replayed that old cover of yours countless times over the years, so naturally, I got pretty excited to see this update! It's crazy to think that I've followed yours and Josh's journey all these years. You guys were my guitar inspirations (and you guys still continue to impress time and time again). I was just learning guitar at that time and you made this song one I had to learn and even now, it's one of my go-tos.

This is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, maybe in the top 10 or top 5. I love the teen Carson version and of course all the Dylan ones. But in this version Carson captured the poetry and deep delicacy of the lyrics like no one else. The drama of encounter and loss. Chance. The pain and the delight. Whenever I want to listen to Simple Twist of Fate I look for this page. Carson, you're a great singer not only because of technique, but because you understand, feel and sing the poems. Greetings from Brazil

Lucky for me, Dylan's lyrics broke threw after years of listening. And then, I think from his Album, "Blood On The Tracks", a Song spoke to me, like no other. You young Man, did not only the Song proud, but yourself ! IMHO ! Much like, Mr. Zimmerman, you didn't rush it, and allowed the listener time to remember what those occasions were like, when out of nowhere, Life decides to throw you, a simple, " Twist Of Fate " ! Beautifully done ! Bravo ! Thank You ! @ ✌️
