Watched Matt on “diesel creek” he had a rust fuel tank so he filled it with some diesel and threw a chain into it, sealed it up and bolted it to the wheel of his tractor for about a week while he did other jobs using the tractor. That cleaned the tank right out from all its rust

White vinegar works very well and also be saved and used over many times. I just filter it through a shop rag when I put it back in the bottle to remove most of the dissolved rust. You do need to rinse the tank out with baking soda mixed with water to stop the vinegars action when done. Very easy and safe method.

@@Nikosakiiid you clean it with baking soda? It stops the acid reaction, after all of that the metal will be exposed and dry of oil which will cause rusting If not oiled but idk if you can oil a gas tank or if the fuel will protect it (prevent oxygen and moisture from getting to the exposed metal surface and oxidising

Can confirm this works. Did a similar thing restoring an old 63 F100 truck. The behind the seat fuel tank was full of rusty crap. We removeed it and threw a hand full of 3/8 nuts into it and taped it all shut.Then we strapped it to a portable concrete mixer and let it spin for a half hour or so. Flushed it out with hot water and then blew it dry with compressed and let it sit in the sun. Once we knew it was totally dry we re-sealed it and put a new fuel gauge sending unit in it and it was good as new.

I'd recommend using a non-flammable solvent. While unlikely, steel on steel can generate sparks, and if not that, you're own motion with your clothing can build static electricity. A small amount of something highly volatile in a closed container (tank) makes a great explosive.
@baldeagle242

Notice he didn’t shake it violently. Don’t ever do this and shake violently if it was a Briggs. They have an open bowl reservoir that the carburetor feeds from. If you hit it hard enough, it may distort the bowl, or change its depth creating a different metering problem.

I do the same but then I finish up with raw barley, it finishes it up nice. Especially if you have a paint can shaker

If you trust your plugs are tight you can tape a blanket around it and toss it in dryer...coldest cycle. After whatever you put in it of course.

Use.177 steel BBs. A crap load of them are cheap and because they are small they can get in small places and corners.

Some chain, vinegar and strap to a another riding mower/zero turn/tractor/skid steer while operating for a couple hours. Vibrations usually pull most of it out.

I just put kept a cup of sand in it. Put the lid back on it. Stick my air blower inside the little hole, cover with the rag. Then just blow the h e l l out of it. Few minutes it done and it shines.
