I love old institutional buildings (grade school/college and hospitals), the fire alarm systems, boilers, and old electrical systems are fantastic, it’s too bad that after they’re decommissioned they get torn down. There is an elementary school by where I live built in 1926, and because there are cookie cutter houses going up like crazy, there is a new one being build as a replacement. I think it would be cool to buy an old building like that and re-purpose it into an office building.

The 4002 is an amazing panel, it’s sad that these things today are being replaced with Honeywell or EST systems. There is a primary school which as of this comment being written is being removed and possibly thrown out, I do know someone that works for the district who might save some of the old alarms and pulls and even the panel if there is a way. I feel like the old alarms are better than newer ones, they get your attention real fast, they are also very low pitched. High frequency alarms do have a slight flaw, some are so high pitched that old people probably can’t hear them, I don’t know if that’s true, but older is better.

Ah the 4002...big old monster, those things. Still have 3 or 4 active in inspections I do. A few notable details about the 4002 (and 4001) that I have encountered: The nature of the zone circuits is such that there is a delay upon tripping one before the zone will go into alarm...about 2 seconds. So...pull a pull station, unlock and reset it fast enough and the alarm will not trip. Hence the sign that says "Hold for three seconds" by the pull rod. Can't say for sure but I think the reasoning behind it is that smoke detectors of that era were much more prone to falsing, and the simplex ones like to trip rapidly on and off when the smoke level is lower than it should be...or dust is present. So this delay allows for that to happen and not trigger nuisance alarms. Just a guess. The other tidbit is the fact that the temporal/code 3 circuit in this is not quite "correct" in that the sequence time is slightly longer than the ansi standard 4 seconds (+/-10% - works out to 3.6-4.4sec). These are just shy of 5 sec...and I possess this useless knowledge due to having had to deal with it in the field. Long story short: young new town fire inspector flexing his muscles because he could decided to take issue with me passing one of them for this reason. The complex bureaucratic mess that are codes, standards, etc is one that can be endlessly nitpicked but these panels were produced in the late 80s and early 90s; Temporal 3 was standardized somewhere around '96. That fact means it doesn't matter than it cannot produce the "correct" output...as long as it still works it is grandfathered in until it dies. That was my argument against failing it. His was that since it was set to code 3 it had to be "correct". My response? Changed it to march time and passed it again. Awaiting their response.
@MircomFan5 жыл бұрын
lmao, yeah any system I deal with that was made before '96 I leave the coding the way it is. Most fire inspectors here don't really care much. Plus we don't ever fail panels for that reason, only if they truly don't work, or we have to upgrade elevators, which has been a big factor in the many systems we've replaced this year. We do 2 that I know of, one in an apartment building, and another in a commercial complex, both set to continuous.

It appears the Simplex 4002 system was initially audible-only, and then additional horn/strobes were installed in the 1990s so it could be an audible/visual system. Now what I'd REALLY find interesting to see is a very modern fire alarm system (something like one of the new Simplex panels) tied into an old manual pull rod system, with the modern electronic horn/strobes. That would be a cool mix of old and new fire alarm technology.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms7 жыл бұрын
Any new, modern day fire alarm system can be tied into a manual pull rod system by using a micro-switch that is similar to the one in my video, The Invisible Pull Rod Fire Alarm System. If you haven't already, check it out. There are various ways of attaching the micro-switch to the pull rod to activate any modern, automated fire alarm system regardless of the brand/company.

Saw a few comments proclaiming the horns as mechanical, not electronic. Horns from this era are indeed electromechanical in nature; however, take one apart and you will find an electronic driver circuit that uses optical feedback to dramatically amplify the sound output and at the same time not use nearly as much current as the electromagnet doesn't need to be as strong. Without the electronics involved, these would not produce the necessary level of sound output. I discovered this by accident when attempting to use one with a microcontroller to produce music and it sounded godawful. In the process of trying to figure out why I found a patent for the circuit which had a schematic. And of course I can't find it now to link....sigh.
@OldSchoolFireAlarms7 жыл бұрын
