I used my Irish Spring bath soap as my daily shaving soap for the last 20 years until about 6 months ago when I got started on the Proraso, TOBS, T&H, Col. Conk, etc., and I haven't looked back. But when I travel, whatever soap bar they give me at the hotel, that's what I use for my shave. I can't be arsed to pack soap and a brush. The true shaving soaps are delightful pleasures. The bath soap still gets the job done pretty well.

Bar soap is what my dad used when I was a kid. (Early 60’s) When the soap,bar we used in the shower was reduced to a sliver, it would go into his mug. He used the single, injector type razor. By the time I was old enough to shave, Trac2 was out, I used those, and barbasol.

I had an elderly neighbor who used to do the same thing, saving his soap scraps in a heavy ceramic coffee cup. He would then heat the cup in a double boiler and melt the scraps into a cake. He used a Gillette safety razor which at the time was older than I was. That fascinated me.

Thank you for the demo. I wondered if shaving cream was another sales hype to ignore. It seemed so. I already make soap. Tried to find a shaving cream recipe and it lead me back to soap. FYI for DIY people: You can make your own soap with three ingredients -- rain water (or distilled water), ashes from hard woods or palm fronds, and tallow or lard. Its easy. My son (age 11 at the time) and I made soap long ago for a homeschool science experiment. In chemistry, the process is called saponification. Lye, rainwater and ashes, chemically changes fat into soap. To scent it you can add essential oil of your choosing. Or just make a tea with a scent you like -- bay leaves, rosemary, pine needles... Pour the scented water/tea over ashes to make lye.

Great shave! Dove is my daily go-to shave product as it's what my father always uses also. My father just does it very quickly with just his hands and then shaves. I like to use the brush and I face lather (similar to how you lathered for your Palmolive shave stick video - I just rub the Dove soap on my wet face, and then use my brush to create the lather and it's super slick). The Dove Soap you used in this video is also recommended by dermatologists in the UK and worldwide (I also heard President Obama's dermatologist provided him with Dove Shave Cream in his shaving routine). The amazing thing about this soap is that it's great for face wash before bed, and also can be used as a pre-shave moisturiser before shaving (if shaving with other soaps). There is also a Sensitive Dove Cream Bar Soap which I find more creamier (although there is less scent), you should try it one day :) Sorry for the long comment, I just wanted to share my Dove research and experience with you :)

Shave soap and bar soap are made of the exact same thing and the exact same process to make. As long as you use a moisturizing bar soap its literally no different than a shave soap.

No they aren’t. Typical bar soap uses sodium hydroxide and oils. Shave soap uses Stearic acid, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. Much different process and ingredients.
@zachsiatrevor2 жыл бұрын
@@Prosecute-fauci meaning??
@Prosecute-fauci2 жыл бұрын
@@zachsiatrevor the chemicals are different, and you get a different product. Shave soap is made to make dense, stable lather that doesn’t pop or merge into adjacent bubbles. Regular bar soap does not care about the lather quality per se. Regular bar soap balances it’s ability to strip oil away with its moisturizing quality, and the hardness of the bar. They are meant to do different things, so they are made differently. I should know, I have made thousands of bars of bar soap and hundreds of pucks of shaving soap.
@zachsiatrevor2 жыл бұрын
@@Prosecute-fauci Thanks
@Prosecute-fauci2 жыл бұрын
@@zachsiatrevor no problem. It took me some research to figure out the differences when I started making shave soap a year or so ago. I had made tons of bar soap for my family and friends by then, and I knew my process, so having to re-learn soap making was a bit of an adventure. KZbin has a bunch of videos on it made by people who make shave soap. If you watch them you will see the differences. Bar soap is single lye, (sodium hydroxide”, shave soap is dual lye, ( sodium hydroxide/potassium hydroxide). The end products even look extremely different.

LOL, I got one of those Dove bars in my bathroom. I have used Dove once or twice to shave. Their tagline "1/4 moisturizing cream" (the secret behind that "residual slickness") might be good for gliding. Dove is near ph-neutral (6, closer to your body's 5,5 than traditional soap which is 8 to 10) which is good for skin prone to drying out, but because it's not as alkaline as traditional soap, it may not soften your whiskers that well. However, I never experienced any issues as long as the blade is sharp and it's a razor I can recommend. The razor you kindly reviewed is not one I'd recommend. Not really because it's Chinese (it's a Baili) but because it's too mild and has that slippery handle. The long, sleek handle appeals to women who later complain on amazon that it slips out of their hands. Definitely not for people who shave in the shower (like many women do) and not for other people, either. Unless you happen to like that razor, then it's okay.

Instead of loading the brush with the soap in your hand, try using the bar as a shaving stick. Wet your face with warm water. Rub the bar over the area you are shaving. I finally used up the plastic green bowl of Proraso soap I bought in January. I ordered another, but I had a brand new can of Edge shaving gel that I figure I would use up before I started using the new bowl of Proraso. So for the past two weeks I have been just squirting some Edge on the brush and dripping a little water on it. Other than it's a bit messy it works just fine. You just proved that a $2.00 bar of soap will work just as well as a $10 or more shaving soap. On a side note I have been using Soft Soap hand soap for showering for at least 5 years. Get two 80oz jugs for under $10.00 at Costco, and stores want to charge you $3.00 or more for a 24oz bottle body wash. So my opinion is soap is soap as long it is made to be applied to your skin. I think one a sharp blade and then the right razor are more important than what soap you use to get a good shave.

SinatraLennon, you did a great job of that shave. And you were far more pleasant about it, as is your style, that IAMCDB when he used washing up liquid! I saw Kensurfs shave with the handmade one and it was a beautiful piece of kit. M&S is a posh shop jn the UK. Lidl or Aldi would be the closest to Walmart. They are both duscount, no frills German shops.

I use bar and liquid soaps sometimes. I wash my face with soap and I use it for shaving then.

Great video! Bar soap lasts 20% longer, when used with The Magic Soap Dish, and best of all, no more mess! Holds bar soap high and dry.

Interesting video as usal. Mild razors can be shimmed to be more aggressive, just get an old blade and cut its cutting edges with a scissor and put this shim under the real cutting blade to raise it and increase the gap between the blade and the safety bar, you can put more than one shim as needed but putting too many shims can prevent the razor from shutting correctly, I use a plastic shim that I shaped because it's thick and will last and will not rust, plastic shim is one time deal, I use it regularly with Merkur 34G and it makes it much more aggressive, I tried to shim the R41 for fun just to see how it feels but it wasn't a good Idea lol, just shim the mild razors
@SinatraLennon5 жыл бұрын
You shimmer the R41?! Do you still have skin on your face?! Brave, sir. Brave.

This was a great vid! Especially if your in a pinch use bar soap. Dove is a good choice cause it's renowned for moisturizing, lever 2000 might dry out your skin. Especially if left on too long lol 💈

That’s the reason that I chose Dove. It really did lather well!

looks so nice, want to lather up a regular soap for a shower now.
@smievil2 жыл бұрын
it looked nice but felt like normal soap in the end. i lathered really well though, i usually keep the soap in it's can or tries to shave of some of it to put in another can to lather which usually looks quite mediocre.

I think the VdH Shave Butter is actually a non-lathering shave cream (works pretty well for me). It works as aftershave balm too.

@anthonymerola14893 жыл бұрын
Your skin can get a bit dry, but a good moisturizer or after-shave balm or gel fixes that problem.

Exactly, apply a balm after that, unless remains very dry...

Soaps like Ivory, Dove, and especially Irish Spring dry my skin out really bad. It’s the worse in the winter time. I have to use a moisturizing bar or old timey lye soap. For shaving I usé Mitchell’s Woolfat because it’s very slick.

I used to shave with just water and never really had any cuts. But I guess it depends on your skins sensitivity lol

A body bath bar soap can be used for wet shaves, but expect to get some cuts if you try any. From this video and another demo vid on KZbin, Dove and Pears might be the exceptions. I had tried three different bar bath soaps and they gave me face cuts every time.

Dove is a lotion kind of bar of soap where Irish spring etc are dry soap. Dove after washing gives a nice smooth skin texture where Irish etc imo is used for when your sweaty get rid of all that oil and dry that skin nice and clean. Not good for shaving cause it’s a dry soap bar. It’ll dry up your skin after rinse with water abs make your skin abit rough. You’ll become ashy soon too so eventually needing lotion so for me it’s dry soap bar for the summer time & dove for the rest of the months

I haven't had the Van Der Hagen shave butter in a while, but I remember it working great for me. The razor looks like a clone of the old Gillette Tech, so it is indeed mild and good for beginners, and one feature I especially like about it is the raised bits in the corners that keep the blade aligned properly, I don't know why all DE razors don't have that.
