Great video! The 309 was actually a real mainstream theater opened up by Cinecom in Feb. 1972. After the company fell into Chapter 11 and seen many of it's screens go to either Sportservice or even Hallmark (as in the company that originally Distributed LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT), it went on it's own as the Adult Theatre you saw. The change for the 309 was very quick as it turned Adult by the end of 1973.

I used to work in an adult bookstore in the late 80s It was an old vaudeville historic landmark theater and converted to a movie house in the 20s and it had a beautiful balcony that was above the main floor. And there was the projection room that was converted to be the booths and magazine selling area. The main money is made by the booths. The 2 owners made 250,000 each year from the booths I used to help the owner clean out the booth coin boxes and we had a 55 gallon trash can we used and it was a lot of quarters but also 1s, 5s, 10s and 20s It is crazy how much anonymous gay sex happens We had glory holes in the booths and the city made us plug them and people brought in cordless drills with hole saws and cut new ones

Fun fact-almost all of those conversions were done by the same company, and they did them on the cheap meaning they didn't bother to pull out all the asbestos. Most of the driving scenes in this video were like having deja vu. I have relatives in the area and have driven past some of these same landmarks dozens of times while visiting. Coal mining has been the heart and soul of that area for decades but the area's economy had been in decline for awhile. Back in the 90's, they tried to revitalize the downtown areas of both Scranton and Wilkes Barre but they ran out of money. The Steamtown Mall was a pork barrel project that seemed to be the one downtown success. A two-story indoor shopping center with an underground parking garage. That place was packed with shoppers almost every weekend. Justin Bieber nearly caused a riot when he performed a concert in the middle of the mall very early in his career. But Internet shopping and changing tastes saw the mall with many vacancies. When I was there a few years ago, the place was a ghost town. If you step out the front doors of the mall and look to your left at the top of the buildings, you can see the Dunder Mifflin sign. When they opened the casinos in the Pocono area, some of the surrounding businesses tried to tie their name into that business. That OYO motel has been there for at least 50 years. I forget its original name but it changed its name to Casino Countryside Inn to piggyback on the casino business. When I was last in the area, I noticed the change to OYO and wondered if it had changed hands. I have seen that hotel filled to capacity at times. On a final note, the Cinema 309 was once seen as a shining light in the community. When it originally opened, it was marketed as a family theater next to a newly built shopping center with the mayor and local dignitaries at the premiere. It was a 500 seat theater with state of the art equipment. As many theater chains discovered in the early 70's, family theaters did not attract paying customers. Within two years of opening, its content was mostly adult fare. In 70's and the 90's, local officials tried shutting down the place, creating a free speech issue. Just a few years ago, the owners tried getting a permit to add a "cabaret" next to the theater.

I had no idea these types of booths and theaters still existed with the advent of the internet. The 2 crypt keepers were probably there for nostalgia. The place you stayed at was so nice, and so clean! I recently had to stay at a Marriot, and it was filthy and run down! I put towels on the pillow cases, sheets, and to sit on the desk chair. Big rip off, too, it was like more than double what you paid! Ew, that last booth was so gross! Someone has to be at rock bottom to want to sit there! Interesting video. Thanks!

I am 48yrs old. I am.a lifelong resident of Southern N.J., my sister went to a college called Miseryacordia that is very close to Wilkes Barre PA. That was in the late 90's. I stayed at the Travelodge on the hill near the adult playtime boutique. It was a clean, safe hotel. It was the little one next to it now abandoned that was sketchy. I never remember those adult theaters being very popular. I passed many as I traveled a lot and don't recall the parking lots being packed. Surely the internet made it easier for the creepers to access their fantasy movie of choice. I did watch some adult movies over the years but never had the urge while driving to stop in such a place and catch a quick flick. I find it utterly disghusting. Apparently, those places are still turning a profit.

@@potatolew4495 The last time those places were popular was in the 80's. Maybe they could use the building to make porn movies. That stuff was really underground stuff in the 80's. Most adult stuff nowdays isn't so hidden and creepy. With some exceptions, everybody likes porn. Porn is more socially accepted nowdays. People still visit adult shops to buy sex toys, kinky outfits, videos and whatever else goes along with the concept. There was a time prior to the VCR when people would watch porn on Film. Most porn was magazines and photos. In the 70's and 80's people could still have sex. Women from that era are far more attractive that what is out there nowdays.
