As someone who understands how much technology is used in this store, i just wonder how long it had to be in beta form before it was able to be opened up to the general public. Think about it. Everything is cataloged in a massive server. Hundreds of simultaneous users. Entry points and everything put onto a server. And at the end, the bots, like how much testing that had to be done to have everythjng have such a compact storage. This.. is just amazing when you look at the functionality of the whole thing.
@tommykokko23364 жыл бұрын
It's hundreds! As someone who understands what kind of systems you need to handle hundreds of simultanious users I roll my eyes. The issue is not how much work has gone in to making this miraculous feat happen, it's why anyone didn't stop them from doing it at all. I do understand it's asia, and ideas from the top are rarely questioned by anyone below them.
@saturnGEEK4 жыл бұрын
This is an awesome system. There's definitely some design challenges and refinements that are required, but the overall concept and implementation is truly amazing! There is definitely some clunky designs with the bagging and collection systems that could be argued for a lifetime, and some improvements on the app design, but these are things that will gradually improve over time. I can see this system being beneficial for the elderly and disabled, as soon as the software has improved substantially and the systems become more efficient. Now, if only the uneducated masses on here would stop complaining about the plastic waste.. Many people have never read a food standards guide (legislation) and probably never will. Nor have any clue on how non-plastic "alternative" materials are manufactured nor the potential hazardous risks that these materials can have on the environment.
@tommykokko23364 жыл бұрын
@@saturnGEEK No, this store is dead in the water. I bet investors have been pouring tons of money in there and that the burn rate is crazy. The day when the investors have had enough, that store is done. Amazon is on to something, but I think they also have some way to go, but they have the capital to do it right and probably will sooner or later. Another contender for "smartest shopping" is rfid stickers, but for now the scan yourself thingie is what is working and I don't see that changing in the near future. For this to work you need to be able to take things from the shelf, put it in your bag and leave the store without any hassle.
@saturnGEEK4 жыл бұрын
@@tommykokko2336 RFID has significant issues - primarily in manufacturing cost and security vulnerabilities compared to barcodes. RFID does have a purpose, but not in the manner that you envision. Amazon and this store have two different markets that they will inevitably target. Amazon's store focuses on rapid purchases without any form of cashier. It's all automatic charging from when you walk in to walk out. Meanwhile, this store appears to focus more on a casual shopping experience - combining supermarket shopping with cafes/restaurants. That's a pretty rare combination to see in many places across the world. Not because "...investors have had enough...", rather consumers aren't interested. Supermarkets that do follow this business model with active cafes/restaurants are very successful.
@tommykokko23364 жыл бұрын
@@saturnGEEK Rfid isn't less secure than self scanning, cost might be an issue but also might not. I can see why you try to make it an experience, but I would rather watch a mime or ride a mall train than doing this convoluted crap... and that speaks for something.

This is just for a special and cute experience. You may like to go to Habitat regularly to buy groceries but it will take as long as a traffic jam.

Everything gotto start at some point to prove that it can be done, yeah it maybe inconvenient but it doesn't mean it can be improved. At this point this is a experience rather than a convenient supermarket. I smell so many people trying to be "smart" but actually they can't understand the importance of starting something that no one dares to start because it can lead to so many opportunities in the future. Really impressed with this idea, keep improving so that world will adopt from you.

Very cool video. The store is a bit impractical and gimmicky, but the tech head in me still thinks it's cool. Also, I worked at a grocery store 20 years ago with one of the first, if not the first, self checkout in my city. It was clunky and problematic as heck. A fad that would never catch on. Now they're all over the place, and work (for the most part) pretty well. This could definitely be a look at a future of shopping :)

Nice place to hangout for few hours, but not so smart when everything still needs to be guided by human, the transaction of the payment system also takes too long after scanning the QR code.

On one hand, I can see this being practical/fun/interesting, but I also look at all the insanely bad things that could happen if this was put in the US.

When you buy the lobster then they gave you to fork, knife and spoon with plastic you don't need plastic to open just use paper and wrap the fork, knife and spoon it is super simple. Plus when you finish earn the food then have to something put shopping cart in for long.

I do like that you can shop for a meal and have them prepare it right there. Would solve the problem of over-buying when you're hungry, plus you get to choose your cut/piece instead of the cook choosing for you. In future, it might work better for produce to be given a computer-readable tag per piece or bunch instead of wasting all the packaging on things that don't need it. Then you could choose to use their bags/boxes or bring your own containers/bags. Make it more like a tech savvy farmer's market. jmho, though.

WOW! your videos are amazing! I never knew they had so much English stuff in Singapore! The prices of stuff from America are comparable (and sometimes better) than those found here in the US! Thankyou so much for sharing!

Buying the produce fresh and having it cooked in front of you is always a winner. People love that experience. But i think the shopping experience itself is a bit flawed. What about when a customer has bought boxes of heavy products? That wont be carried by the ceiling conveyers as its too heavy. What about those who have bought a lot of products, how do they carry the bags or how does it fit in that tiny trolley? They'll need a larger trolley and that won't fit in the scanning system. Good but not there yet.
@andrewcurtin70035 жыл бұрын
Honestly? Judging by the size of those crates I'm willing to bet they are about as big as a person, it's kinda hard to tell from the angle, but if that's the case they are more then likely gonna use braded steel cable to support the bags, more then likely having it attached through the bag to underneath it as well (so that the bag is being cradled by the cable) If this is true then those cables can hold a couple hundred pounds, the actual fabric probbaly dosent hold that much weight, I didnt see anything overly large in the store, but I am willing to bet if somone gets alot of stuff they just split it between multiple bags (Entirely based on what I saw in this video, probbaly not accurate)
@Auralisha5 жыл бұрын
Haha. I looked at the tiny shopping cart and thought...ok. But here it is common to buy water, pet supplies, groceries for an entire week, etc all in one go. Pack it in the car and drive home with 289319 products. Guess if you had to take the train or bus, you would only buy a small amount too.
