1992 finds death metal to be in full swing, with remnants of thrash just barely clinging to life. With their debut album, Cross the Styx, The Netherland's Sinister are a perfect union of both styles. Their sound is undeniably deathly in regards to brutality, while the technical "riff salad" side of their song craft is steeped in thrash nostalgia. Somehow, this complex and unholy union still finds each track maintaining its own memorable trait which demands replay-ability. Truly a stand out release in early death metal that few seem to talk about or recognize... until tonight! So where do the Metallurgists stand on this classic? Will they hail the old gods, or will they embrace an Epoch of Denial? Join us and find out!!

Cross the Styx is an incredible album and my favorite Sinister record. The riffs are slash and burn take no prisoners compositions that leave nothing left alive. The vocals are savage and decipherable, and the drums just hammer you into submission. Great discussion!

You're a riff beast brother. Yeah Cross and Diabolical have the more memorable and sticky riffs. The drumming decisions brought the riffs to life for sure. Like the guys said in the video, that ferocious tight blast really put a viciousness to the songs that many bands didn't have at that time yet.

It's really kinda weird to hear people still talking and loving what we did back in the day. I joind them before Cross the Styx was recorded. Except for Corridors witch was my only co-written song contribution to that album. Ron is responsible for the insane riffs on that album,i can tell you that shit was hard to learn and it was way beyond my imagination concerning writing riffs,i sended this review to him as well and it was fun to watch and i feel very humble and thankfull for the people who still enjoy it and keep it alive. Thank you 🙏🍻

First Sinister song I ever heard was putrefying Remains on the Death... Is Just The Beginning II Comp, back in the day. It was always a stand out track on that Comp to me. Cross The Styx is one of the greatest death metal albums ever made! 10/10

Why didn't Sinister become a bigger band? 1. Releasing your debut album in 1992 was far too late for you to build a following and tour internationally before death metal lost its traction in the mid-90s. 2. They lost their primary songwriter and guitarist André after the second album, which meant the lineup fell apart before fans could even get to know the band. 3. The style of death metal they played, although done in a distinct way, was derivative of what had already been done by other more popular bands. That said, they were a great band for the first two albums, and Hate wasn't bad either, but you could really hear André's sharp playing missing when Bart took over the guitar.

Sinister is a badass DM band! Always felt that they were underrated like Marty said with the likes of Grave etc...
