So glad you attended Sinulog. It seemed like you missed a lot of the actual parade and dance performers though - its an amazing sight to see the groups in costumes and doing choreographed dances. I hope you attend At-Atihan next year which is the original festival that Sinulog copied from a neighboring island. Its similar and yet different than what you experienced in Cebu.This coming weekend in the neighboring island in the city of Ilo Ilo, the festival Dinagyang will take place. Sinulog, Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang are the 3 largest Mardi Gras festivals of the Philippines.

Excuse me, Sinulog is not a copycat from Ati-Atihan. Ati-Atihan might be a lil older in terms of practice but when it comes to choreography, it doesn't have the basic dance and standard beat unlike Sinulog. Don't get me wrong, I do not discount Ati-Atihan as the "Mother of All Philippine Festivals" but do not say that Sinulog tried to copy it bec the two are way different from each other. If there's any festival which copied Ati-Atihan that would be Dinagyang. This year's celebration marks the 453rd anniversary of Sinulog bec for so many years it was only being done inside the premises of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino as a simple dance ritual. In other words, it was basically a religious affair organized by the priests and religious. It was only in 1980 that it became a city-wide celebration when the Cebu City Government organized the first Sinulog Festival where they invited schools, colleges and universities to perform in the streets of Cebu doing the one step forward, two step backward beat.

Kierro David let's put it this way, if not for Ati-Atihan, Sinulog wouldn't exist except inside a few churches. And it does have a lot of similarities to Ati-Atihan. I have pointed out they are similar but different at the same time. Sinulog is a copycat, but it has evolved over time to be a different experience than Ati-Atihan. Copycat is not the right word for that. No one is copying from anyone bec the practice has been there a long time ago. I would like to believe Sinulog was INSPIRED by Ati-Atihan to take the celebration into the streets because Sinulog was basically a church event for so many years.

Inspired is too generous a term. Sinulog parade/performances has an emphasis on dancing with the Santo Nino, and Ati-Atihan focuses more on the native tribes/culture of the Philippines before the Spaniards arrived. However, the way the people celebrate both occasions is almost indistinguishable now between the large street parties, face and body painting (which Ati-Atihan started), etc. Its not like Ati-Atihan is truly original anyway - it borrowed heavily from Mardi Gras festivals that originated in Europe and ended up being exported to other places like New Orleans and Rio. The dance troops/crews are very similar to the krewes that make up the groups and floats seen performing at New Orleans and Rio during Mardi Gras. The major difference being the Philippines holds the Mardi Gras festivals a month in advance before the rest of the world does.

What I meant about inspired is the manner by which the festivities are being done. Ati-Atihan has always been done on the streets and merrymaking is the sole purpose of the festivities while Sinulog has always been done inside the Sto Nino Church and is purely religious in nature that's why even up to now, the religious aspect of Sinulog such as the Walk for Jesus, Walk with Mary, the 9-day novena masses, the Translacion, the Fluvial procession, the Foot procession, the Mananita mass, the Pontifical mass, etc are always there which you cannot find in Ati-Atihan. It was only in 1980 that Sinulog was taken into the streets when the Cebu City Govt organized the first Sinulog street dancing parade but it was not something the Church initiated. I dunno if they went to Kalibo to witness how Ati-Atihan was being done there but definitely it was not something to copy out from them. I think what you meant as copying prolly were the costumes used in Sinulog over the years which somehow became quite similar to Ati-Atihan (headdresses and bodypainting) but really that's something we cannot prevent from happening. Lest you forget, traditionally Visayans wore bodypainting and tattoos as a form of art so you cannot say the Atis or Ilonggos in general have exclusive right over bodypainting bec even Cebu's greatest rulers Lapu-Lapu and Humabon also have tattoos. You know what if you noticed, Sinulog Festival as 2 categories namely: Sinulog-based (SB) and Free Interpretation (FI) categories. Usually the SB category is religious in nature sticking with the traditional Sinulog beat thus you seldom see big costumes, huge props, upbeat sounds in that category while the FI category on the other hand is the exact opposite of SB because it's basically cultural in nature. There you will find those huge headdresses, huge props, loud and upbeat sound, etc which you prolly see in Ati-Atihan and Dinagyang but really there's nothing we can do about it bcoz at the end of the day whichever has the largest crowd is always NUMBER 1.
