Sip It or Skip It Redbreast 15

What a coincidence that this pops up the same week (and same day of recording) *and* the last pour falls on a Sip It or Skip It? Gotta love when funny stuff like that happens when you’re running a channel. Great set of reviews ,and while RB15 is quite good, we’re with you on the value (or lack thereof) ultimately leading to a skip these days.

I had just enough to put 1 oz into 2 blind samples before the bottle was empty. I will miss this bottle, but happy to not pay $135.00 to replace it. Running a channel is certainly an adventure. It's like a box of chocolates. Cheers!

That is pretty funny. Spot on again, even if it feels like deja vu 😆. In my Whiskey circles we are pretty much all not buying another bottle, we all like it but not at the current price. Great job, thanks again Peter.

I agree, Irish isn't my favorite category but I really enjoy the Redbreast 12 at the price!

It sure is hard to beat the RB 12 CS and the RB 12 regular release as far as Irish whiskey goes.

Let me know what you think of it when you try it. If you feel comfortable dropping in the price you paid for it I would be interested to know. I saw it the other day at Trevor's (a new liquor store in Phoenix) for $124.00. Total Wine is still $135.00. Cheers!

What's interesting is I get a chocolate note when tasted alongside the other bottles from their line...

Chocolate notes are a good thing to get. I'll have to look for that note the next time I have them. January First Friday Flight Fight is Redbreast. So we will see if the chocolate note is there.

I thought you had just done a video on this bottle. I really like this series because I do feel like this is the only kind of review that matters: buy again or pass. There are so many good bottles out there and there is no reason to own them all. You have to make some hard decisions and value has to play a factor.

My goal is to review every bottle in my collection twice. On Monday it will the be the in-depth review with a score and Wednesday will be the Sip It or Skip It. It was totally random that the wheel selected Redbreast 15 in the same week I did the in-depth review. I guess that's how random "random" is. Cheers.

I have walked by Redbreast 15 several times over the past couple months. I see it for $135 on sale in Seattle. Lots of places have it at $150. Then you gotta consider Washington's grab-your-ankles tax.

Good review Peter. I love the Redbreast lineup, but I agree that their higher age - stated bottles have become just too expensive. If you think the 15 is expensive, take a look at the 21 or 27 year old bottles. I’m not sure who buys these, not me!

I bought them very early on in my journey. The review is coming up on my Monday video in the next few weeks. They are the 2 most disappointing bottles I have in my collection.

It's unfortunate that the price of Irish whiskey has risen so steeply. Powers John Lane remains relatively affordable and for me typifies the classic Irish pot still style. Do you have a go-to whisky retail store in the PHX area? I've been to Trevor's in Scottsdale and feel that they have a good selection, but wonder what other stores might be in the area.

I hit 3 Total Wine and More stores as well as Trevors. TWM on Camelback, Tatum, and 75th Ave. I try to get to them at least 2 times a week.

This isn't one I would keep on the shelf even at the old price. I remember deciding to boycott Lagavulin 16 when it went up from £32 to £40. I thought it was expensive at £32, and now it's £80 🤣 In time other whisk(e)y will achieve price parity and then the current price will seem reasonable again.

Being relatively new to the whisk(e)y world I am shocked how fast prices are going up. In the 1 1/2 years I have been paying attention to the prices...my head is spinning.

@@whiskeyisajourney I have no hard data to support this but it does feel worse right now. I was at a tasting with Billy Walker at Glenallachie and he said to buy your whisky now because raw material costs (specifically energy, grain and casks) have risen 300% to 400% at a time when demand is outstripping supply.

@@whiskeyisajourney I look forward to those reviews! For me the 10 is just getting better and better with each release. It has become a bit of a collectors item. We got to try a 6yo peated sherry cask (his spirit rather than existing stock) and it was spectacular. I'll be queueing outside the distillery when they release that!

When I spin the wheel I have to review what it selects and it was just a coincidence that it selected red breast 15. My goal is to do an in depth review of every bottle on Monday along with a sip it or skip it on Wednesday. Once I have that finished with every whiskey in my collection I'm ending my channel. That'll take me 100 years.
