Arne. ♥ You have the kindest heart. I hope that some day when I have gone to live with my ancestors in the Skyworld, that you will find my unfinished objects and care for them and complete them as kindly as you are caring for this forgotten piece. You have a special spirit, Arne. ♥

Here in New England, we call Arnie’s new project “needlepoint,” or “grospoint.” To us, petit point is worked over one of the canvas threads, rather than two. Many of the canvases were sold with the floral center already worked by hand in Madeira. The stitch used is often worked in either continental stitch, which left the canvas warped diagonally, or basket weave stitch, which leaves the canvas quite handsome on the back, and minimally distorted. It’s wonderful to know it will be given a new and vibrant life.

I don’t like to do cross stitch so I find projects that have cross stitch and I finish them with ribbon embroidery. It appears that Arne’s mind is always going and creating. After watching so many videos I have made it a personal goal to try to knit as fast as Arne! Have you noticed an increase in folks interest in learning to knit? Love you gentlemen! Stay safe and healthy!

Mica for the windows? I love thrift stores and my mom started me in this activity - when we came to Canada things were lean so we went to rummage sales to get things that we needed ,now it is a treasure hunt🥰 Love recycling and reusing ,making something new out of something old is always exciting.

You must remember that when you travel so much, you have a lot of waiting time while you wait for flights, and while on the flight. Whereas, when you are home, you are fixing things, cooking cleaning, walking, preparing for gardening, two dogs to take care of. Plus all your projects.

I think it is a Gobelin. Petit Point is much smaller and cotton thread is used. I think your flower embroidery was probably done with woolen thread. I am very curius how this will turn out. Oh, and how about filming Arne in the Thrift store? That would be so cool. Kind of like a "haul" video, a thrift haul. :-)
@lauraketteridge324

I would use the term 'petit point' to refer to tapestry worked over 1 thread of canvas instead of 2, and a half thickness of yarn. For tapestry, It could be half cross stitch, or tent stitch. Tent stitch is slanted on both sides.

I quite like the idea of finishing the embroidery with either black and white flowers that mirror the current ones, or else maybe a pattern that looks like thorns and nettles so the flowers are emerging from that. I really love gothic flower decor

I enjoyed your story about Arne and the thrift store finds. Once, I found a bag of quilt blocks at a rummage sale from a lady who had passed away and I bought them and made a crib-sized quilt out of them, just to finish the project for her. I donated it to a women's shelter in her memory. Bless you both for finishing all those unfinished projects of others.

What a find! I would have scooped up that needlepoint piece too. I love thrift stores and always go through the linen section and have found some beautiful (to me), pieces of cross stitch, crochet, and embroidered aprons and scarfs. I would have grabbed up that piece myself. It's so beautiful. The room you are in is. so calming and peaceful, but then I'm in love with your home and decorating.

To honor the one-year anniversary of your quarantine podcasts, and then your Sit and Knit for a Bit episodes, I want to say, Thank you! Thank you, Arne and Carlos, for taking the extra time and putting in the hours of work to connect with knitters and crafters around the world with encouraging words and real life stories... sometimes fun, sometimes difficult. It didn't matter to me. What mattered was hearing your consistent kindness and "real-ness" even though you became ill yourselves, during a very difficult year. Thank you...you helped me stay sane in the midst of some terrifying circumstances.

I needed to stop your video in order to write to you immediately. You are so obviously well-suited to each other, respect each other and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company. It made me think (and not for the first time during the pandemic) about the many people-children, teens, elders, spouses- who do not live in such comforting circumstances (and I am thankful this does not describe my situation). They must now spend more time than pre-COVID in homes where they experience/witness violence, emotional abuse, loneliness. Perhaps this week we can each pick up the phone and touch base with someone that we suspect is living in a sad and frightening situation. It could mean the world to them. And many thanks, Arne & Carlos, for bringing so much cheer to the handwork community!

I think talking about the weather is something you do when it changes a lot. We too are in Canada and almost every conversation turns to weather. We lived in Malaysia for just over a year and discovered they don't talk about the weather that much but then you didn't have to look at the weather forecast to know what to expect (or wear).

Arne, I’m also a thrift store junkie! You guys, I absolutely love your idea for finishing the petite pointe in your own way with a nice graphic punch! And I think the idea to trade UFOs is BRILLIANT. Also, a side note: Arnie’s accent reminds me so very much of my neighbor growing up. Her name was Gudrun Christiansen, and she was from Stavanger, but came to America when she was 18. She became basically our honorary grandmother. She was a sweet, delightful lady who loved to have me and my sister come over to visit (so our parents could get a rare night out). She always had a tin of krumkaker waiting for us even when it wasn’t the holiday season. Every so often, I’ll hear Arne say something maybe with a long drawn-out “s” sound, and it reminds me so much of her. A lovely, lovely memory. 💕

Oh I so love finding someone else's unfinished objects in thrift stores. I have heaps of my own ufo's, and I work (or play) with them every day, but to find something that another knitter/quilter has begun, and to imagine their thoughts and feelings when beginning their projects is like finding treasure. Bringing these ufo's home to finish is almost like paying homage to their craftmanship and carrying on their work. Not following instructions has nothing to do with nationality! It has to do with being a man! Same as asking for directions! Also.... March 16 is my birthday, so it has been 1 year since I started watching you! You are my birthday present to me!

We share our birthday, Jody! And that is a great birthday gift you got yourself ;-) But don't be so sexist! (Please note, this comment is not meant as an attack but rather lighthearted and fun). I never (need to) ask directions and I am not the best at following instruction manuals either. I am also definitely not male and also not an exception to the rule. Not being conscientious isn't a very handy trait when you are learning a new skill, like knitting! But I did manage to learn it and I recently realised I get a little annoyed by patterns that are very wordy and mention every little thing you need to do. Just get to the point and then let me figure it out! I now have enough knitting skill to enjoy my visuo-spatial abilities and pay less attention to the pattern without serious repercussions. What a liberation ;-D Luckily I have a (male) partner who is more like Carlos and does look at instructions and directions. We compliment each other! Just like A and C do!

I love listening to you talk about finishing projects! My friend, Cathy, passed away last June. Her family gifted me her yarn and knitting collection. Some of the collection will go to programs for children to learn to knit. We are planning to call it “Cathy’s Knitting Club”. In her bins, I found many unfinished projects, and as time went on, I found myself wanting to make them into something for her family... 5 children, 10 grandchildren, (2 with spouses), 3 great grandchildren. The unfinished back of a sweater, turned into a pillow. The unfinished start to several vests and sweaters knit in the round, became cowls, and more pillows for the first generation. The yarn that was dedicated to become a sweater, turned into hats for all the grandchildren. The greats received projects that were started for them! I had everything finished and labeled for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, with a letter from me and Cathy wishing them all a Merry Christmas! Now... time to finish my projects!

I love seeing Arne's passion for finishing the projects found in the thrift shop. I have rescued several myself...just could not leave them ... they deserve the love and appreciation the original owner gave them. Most exciting find was a huge bin of undyed handspun wool. I could still smell and feel the lanolin! It was quite rough in texture, not great for a garment so I made a very large God's Eye. Anyway.......Arne your enthusiasm is palpable and contagious. So very great to have you both back. Oh and...I just ordered 4 jars of Lingonberry preserves because I MUST have them with you pancakes. ❤

I love the finishing of beautiful ufos. I loved looking at those beautiful creamy pink tulips in the vase beside Carlos! They are gorgeous. And I am so ready for your 12 days of Spring! What a fantastic plan for us. In the morning I’m going to get out and select some nice branches from the tree trimmings for my indoor egg tree! Before Hubby cuts them down for removal - he chops them up to smaller pieces to bundle up. They are very fun to use for twig furniture for dollhouses. He did a lot of pruning and thinning over winter. Hope you had fun shopping! The hats and cowls for your ship tours are magnificent.

Carlos Thank you for mentioning how many days we have all been restricted or preparing for the days to follow. While we are all aware of the time but not necessarily conscious of how very life different life has become and how we’ve adapted.

Finally catching up on past episodes. I, for one, would like that crochet pattern. It's very pretty. The needlepoint reminded me that, back in the 50's or 60's, you could buy needlepoint like that with the flowers already done. The idea was that you could pick out which one you liked and then finish the background to fit in with your decor. My mum had one from her mother and Mum used it to cover the piano bench. Mum finished another one to cover a footstool. I have it but it's so worn that I've put it away until I can figure out the right yarn and colours in order to redo some of the flowers. I also love the pattern of the mystery knit-along from your cruise. That's a good idea to make the cowl into a pillow. Looking forward to knitting eggs. Happy Spring!

My mother died a few years ago and never finished the blanket she was crocheting for my niece (her grand daughter). The original thought was to finish it but my niece wants it the way my mother left it.

Arne I have not crocheted in years and years (I am addicted to knitting and quilting) but after seeing those beautiful little blocks you made - if you publish the pattern for us, I will be crocheting again! I like them way more than the traditional Granny Squares - they look like beautiful lace. Thank you so much for your Sit and Knit for a Bit - look forward to seeing you both every week!

Oooh...looking forward to seeing more treasures after Arne's trip to the thrift store! His excitement is contagious. I love the episodes of Sit and Knit for a Bit. I have knitting/crocheting in hand and hope to leave fewer UFO's after I'm gone as I devote time to listening and learning from you. Thank you for sharing yourselves with us and also for the tip on Kate's Last Homely House. I've been enjoying her videos as well. Cheers! :)

That's a beautiful stove. Arne has a great eye for antiques road show type artifacts. The "glass" is called mica isinglass or just isinglass in English. I have an interesting collection of old knitting needles I bought from thrift stores.

I did a similar thing. I bought a bag of granny squares at an estate sale. I felt bad that they were probably going to be thrown away. I joined them and now have a very nice afghan that makes me happy. 😊

I calmly and confidently knitted the thumb of my mitten during this episode (so thank you for your calming influence), and also enjoyed hearing about the 'cruise' knit workshops. The boats remind me of the ferries that I used to ride up and down the fjordal coast of British Columbia when I grew up there.
