It can't be his fault, he's practically still a baby. I wonder if he isn't autistic. Obviously he has issues that aren't being addressed, and to lay the blame on him is irresponsible

This kid should not have been allowed back to a mainstream school . He should NEVER have been mainstreamed to start with . ( Ex- special needs teacher speaking ) He needs to be under constant supervision and somewhere his behaviour issues can be monitored so he is not a danger to others . Its pretty clear hes going to have a career involving violence, if hes talking about killing his teacher at 6 years of age . Thank you Dr Grande for an excellent analysis . Abigail was indeed heroic and epitomizes the best qualities of teachers . Pity the same couldnt be said for the asst principal .

@@NeoSharkey I went to school in Hampton Roads (where Newport News is at). I got in trouble once for fighting (after months of bullying, mind you) and I noticed some of the kids in in-school suspension got to joke around and didn't have to do their school work, unlike me. Come to find out one of the ringleaders of the bad acting kids is the nephew of the teacher who was watching us students. So my assumption is that either she was lazy and felt rewarding people, no matter what they do, is a good thing or she was friends with that family.

This reminds me of a situation when was 12. We had a little group of 4 violent kids that one day they decided to still some of my school material on math class. I asked it back and my teacher, who was very aware of their problematic and violent behavior intervened. They became furious but complied. They threatened me and the teacher, but they did nothing in the classroom because she called security. It was the last class of the day and should walk home by myself but my teacher didn't let me go alone. She walked home with me and told me she was going to repport them to the principal and probably things would get worse for me. But she had to do it. The parents would be informed and if they wouldn't take action the school would. And so it happened. All my teachers were informed about the group and my history teacher, a few days later began the class with something like "you 4 kids are violent probably because that's what has been your reality at home. But all the rest of the class will not tolerate that. So before you hurt someone here, remember you'll have to confront your 24 schoolmates and me!" That moment they realised they were in disadvantage and everybody felt united and safe. The school principal also acted as she should. She contacted the parents, she sent the kids to the school psychologist and demanded they were checked everyday to make sure they didn't bring any kind of weapons to school... Of course no one was expecting guns, but knifes and little explosives were expected. I am so proud of my teachers. I think they handled the problem with care and success. 😊 I just wanted to add that this was a plubic (free) school in Portugal in the 90's. I don't know how things are nowadays...

In contrast, I was in kindergarten in the southern USA in the 90s when I got in my first fight, a boy was repeatedly trying to jump on the back of another, who was autistic. I told him to stop and he waved me away and did it again so I jumped on _his_ back, to which he turned around and gave me a bloody nose. We both got the same talk from _the police_ who arrived about so-called "zero tolerance" policies, and we both got suspended, and no one did anything about the bullying. I realized then and there that the immediate authorities can't be relied upon to do the right thing.

I had a student who came us to as he began 7th grade (after being held back a year somewhere earlier in his school life). We can call him John. John was born with Fetal Alchol Syndrome and had spent all his life in foster care due to his mother's addiction and inability to care for herself, much less a child (his sister, one year his junior, lived with the same foster family and was in another class at our school). The foster mother informed my co-mentor and I that John had spent the last four years at a facility, locked in a room with a tutor and released into a tiny courtyard surrounded by barbed wires during recess. He had had zero social interactions with other children, and she was convinced he would be sent back to said facility within a couple of days. We just had to alert someone and he'd be sent away ASAP. That is what SHOULD have happened in this case with this boy.

My son attended an elementary school that had a bad physical bully. He was attacked by the bully and the bully's friend and sustained bruises and back pain. The school didn't inform me that my son has been hurt. A janitor had stopped the assault or my son could have been hurt badly. My son told me that this bully had been doing this crap all year(he was also a 1st grader), and the only punishment he got was to do his school work in the office. I confronted the school, and they tried to make the excuse that the bully was a child of a working single mother. I told them I was a working single mother, and MY son wasn't hurting other children! They promised he would be punished appropriately. He wasn't. He got time in the office as usual. It wasn't until the bully broke a little girl's arm that he was finally removed from that school. Unfortunately, my son learned as a first grader that he couldn't count on school personnel to protect him. He lost faith in authority figures, and so did I.

I live very near to Newport News Va. I grew up in and in fact attended Newport News public schools from 2nd grade to 5th grade. This was in the 1970's. At that time there were no child safety lock laws on the books and there were few if any restrictions on the purchase and ownership of firearms. There were also "troubled" kids with negligent parents who were always getting into fights and being disruptive in class. Yet in spite of this, there were never the issues that public schools now face with student violence against staff and or other students. Blaming the gun or even the bad parent doesnt get the job done. They are definitely contributing factors but there is something else at play here that I can only speculate about. The infantilization of the American adult which has led to an abandonment of responsible parenting and supervision by guardians is the kind of thing Im referring to. I will say this, living in the area I have seen and read hours upon hours of local news coverage of this event in both the local newspapers and on local television news broadcasts. Dr Grande in this 15 minute break down has provided the most informative presentation of the facts as they are now understood to be that I have yet to see. It is as if the local news outlets dont quite have it in them to address the facts of the case in their totality for whatever the reason. Thank you Dr Grande

Out of curiosity, how many students per teacher were there when you attended and how many students per teacher are there now? Do you know or have a rough estimate? Teacher's salaries don't exactly increase to follow cost-of-living increases and I've heard that, in general, they're managing more students per class than is efficient for teaching. News coverage seems to be good with updates or recent happenings in stories, but rarely seem to have an informational report collecting all the case details, when the case has progressed or ended. Even when they report on the resolution of a court case, they don't have the succinct detail of information that Dr. Grande gives. Having easy access to people who value in-depth research and want to organize and present it is one of the great points of this modern internet age.

They should have kept the paddle in the principals office. My brother was violent to other kids. He got a paddle from the principal almost daily for 3 months. He finally started following the rules. Of course he went back to his inappropriate behavior when we moved to another place. He was in special education. I remember being 7yrs old and asking my mom why he's so crazy. She said he just thinks differently, that why we all have to be more patient with him. 🤔 How about a big fat NO. If he would have been given the same consequences as the rest of us maybe his future could have been better than it is now. My mom still made excuses for him until she died. When he was 22yrs old he cut my throat, I was 19yrs old. He has been diagnosed paronoid schizophrenic with criminal intent. I'm now 57yrs old and he's still threatens me. 😮 This teacher was blessed to have survived. Maybe now people/parents will understand that mental illness, aggressiveness, sexual deviantcy does not start at 18yrs old. It slowly shows symptoms from toddler on. There is no doubt in my mind that if given the opportunity, my brother will hurt someone again. When he trespasses on my property they take to the hospital where he only stays 3 days. When he cut and stabbed me he only spent one year in the hospital. He broke his wife's collar bone. No consequences. His son has just been diagnosed schizophrenic at 34yrs old. I don't know why it took so long. 😮

I'm a former teacher up in Canada and at least here, the problem is that the #1 priority of school boards in the government is to have all students integrated together in a typical class at all costs. A student who is persistently violent and threatening is treated as if none of their behaviour is their responsibility and that one more talk, one more small intervention, one more "chance" will allow the student to reform and integrate successfully. Rewarding kids that are sent to the office, letting them run around the school unsupervised, the administration being annoyed by teachers bringing problems to their attention, letting these kids assault other kids and staff with barely any consequences, zero consequences for anything other than serious infractions are all the norm. I think the reason is that they are understaffed and don’t have the money or resources to deal with these kids. They also know they aren’t going to be able to fix these kids. I ended up leaving teaching altogether because I was scared for my safety and the administration was not only negligent but reinforced it (“well this student is x or has y, so therefore you brought it upon yourself.”). If I could talk to Abby Zwerner, all I would say is that she is a brave woman and that she deserves all the justice and then some. This principal needs to be punished. Former k-12 special education school administrator here It's very, VERY challenging to unilaterally place a child into a special education program - even if you have plenty of data (required) and ALL of the school district staff (gen ed teacher, sped teacher, school psych, administrators, and anyone else on the IEP team) agree to it. The key is the parent. If the parent doesnt agree - and authorize it with with written legal consent - then it's not happening, and the child stays in the general education program. And/or - the other key is if the parent feels (or continues to feel) that the services are 'appropriate.' This is because of the 1975 law called IDEA, where all children have a right to be educated with their typically-developing peers. IDEA has been reauthorized several times since 1975, and now the procedural safeguards for the children and families are very strong, giving them a lot of latitude. School districts are constantly fighting lawsuits, which usually end up as settlement agreements where the parents get their way (because it's too costly for the school district to go to court). So much of taxpayer money goes into fighting these lawsuits (not to mention time/effort/anguish from school staff), and the real winners seem to be the lawyers, who know it's easy money to represent a family. I could go on, but you get the picture

The child clearly needed special education services. When a parent will not consent to this, and they change a child's placement without consent the district faces the possibility of a lawsuit on the part of the parents. These parents should therefore be held fully responsible. The school special education admin and building admin may have felt that their hands were tied by Special Ed laws, but they didn't fully consider the safety of others in contact with this child. Unfortunately, Abigail and the rest of the students will never be the same. She reacted with concern for her students' safety first. A true hero.

Excellent analysis. I learned so much from this video. When I taught Sunday school at church, I had one kindergartner who had severe autism. His parents said their older son was cured from the same thing with prayer. When Luke, who was approximately 5 years old was in my class I had to have a second person in the class to keep him from harming himself and others. He would rarely interact in any normal way with anyone in class. Students were afraid of him, he only spoke in grunts and screams, didn’t do anything with the class, or participate in any of the crafts we would do in each class. His parents were educated but at the time, they had 7 children. Luke was the second youngest and the most destructive, out of control chins I’ve ever seen. I do not know what ended up happening but he would be 20 years old now (approximately). The only thing that changed was that the other teachers and I were given a second helper to be one on one with Luke during class. Usually it was a 11-15 year old child of one of the other family’s in church. I wonder if that was part of the John Doe kids issues? Because he sounds a lot like Luke. It’s so scary that a child of 6 years can act like he did and still come into school there with all of those kids. If I had a child there, especially a 5-6 year old girl who had been the victim of John pulling up her skirt and acting out sexually. Every child who had to interact with that kid, or who was at all exposed to him, especially those in the class when he shot his teacher, should sue and be compensated. They are all victims. His parents and the staff who gave him candy and didn’t make the parent stay with him EVERY SECOND he was at school should lose their jobs and spend time in jail for not ensuring the safe environment thst a school should have. John needs to never be back at any place where students are. I see him killing people if he is left with his parents, as they obviously don’t give a 💩 about him or the other students. This makes me so upset. God bless Abigail! What a strong, amazing person she is. It’s a shame thst this kid affected her just with his look. I hope she is able to carry on with her career. She is an asset to any organization or community thst she is in.

This kid is obviously severely damaged and should not have been in classes without supervision, how could that mother decline? In general, kids today are indulged and ignored, they need to be loved and raised with limitations by caring parents for a reason! You can't raise normal kids who spend the majority of their days in front of the TV, electronics, or in paid daycare, where the only investment caregivers have in a child is a paycheck. Not saying there aren't decent ones, but still.

This is the most emotion I've seen Dr. Grande show in any of his videos, especially when he clearly explained his reasons for why he thinks Abigail Zwerner is a hero. I'm disgusted with the behavior of the school administration who could have averted this tragedy. But I'm filled with admiration for Abigail Zwerner who thought first of the safety of her students before her own welfare. I think the word "hero" is overused in the media but not in the case of Abigail. Her actions on that day were truly heroic.

This is what happens when you spare grown adults the responsibility of being a parent as well as a gun owner. One of the first things the parent should've done after buying that handgun was getting a safe, lockbox, or some sort of locker to store the gun. As for being a parent, they should accept the fact their 6 year old child could easily become a career criminal if he doesn't get some sort of rehabilitation.

As a retired first grade teacher I fully support Ms. Zwener's lawsuit for the lack of foresight from both administration and district. I agree with William Lehan's comment on here. I am an ex-paraeducator, and I saw first hand how troubled students are forced to stay in the general education classrooms and at times terrorize their peers. On a daily basis, the education of the other students is compromised because the teachers and staff are dealing with the troubled student. It should not be up to the parent if the child should go to a special education class or not. What about the rights of all the other students? What about the rights of the caring teachers who just want to care for, and teach their students, WITHOUT having to use all their time with violent children, when said child/children really shouldn't be in a general education classroom, or school in the first place. This issue is obviously a national issue that needs to be fixed. It isn't just one school here and there. Our country needs help on a national level to remedy procedures, etc. to make our schools safe.

I found Dr. Grande’s comment about children being naturally narcissistic and it being trained out of them to be very relevant. We have children coming into schools right now who have been home alone with their parents their entire lives. The ones with older siblings generally have the narcissism trained out of them. The only children have been soothed and coddled. They’ve never done anything boring. They’ve not cleaned up after themselves. Parents have been so overwhelmed trying to do childcare while working from home that they didn’t have the emotional capacity to train their kids, just soothe them. Many of the parents recognize this and with the kids now being in school have the energy to be consistent at home now. Most of those kids are coming along very well. I’m glad everyone is getting their pants sued off of them.

As a former school counselor I have seen, heard, been in meetings about, and helped investigate such situations. Personally took a loaded handgun off a 4th grader, at the end of the school day, based on a tip. Admin called the dad, and the issue was never documented. I gave a lot of candy to kids. But, that didn’t mean I was unaware of their issues. These types of “reject” or “abuse” Special Ed or 504 issues complicate the behavior plans, reporting, privacy, rights, etc. But, when Safety is an issue, and “Gun” is implied, much less stated, it’s an automatic “now” issue. It should’ve been documented. But, it very often isn’t. Or, it’s referred to as a “dangerous object” to minimize it. Until school officials are arrested, charged, convicted then the basic immunity they carry will continue to result in these issues being impersonal insurance claims.

Substances. She attends regular conferences in Anchorage on dealing with bullying. Many precious students young and old come from broken homes or alcoholic parents. Some are being raised by grandparents or aunts and uncles. She and her staff have a heart for all kids, and letting undisciplined behavior go on unchecked is just plain neglect and hurts the entire community. Abigails school administration should be charged to the max, and the parents should not get away with any less consequences.

Thank you for clear reporting on this case. Hoping that next you can analyze this child's mother! From the list of potential causes of such ongoing violent behavior of a child, it seems clear that mom was a huge part of the problem. I believe she was quite young herself. The negligence and shortsightedness of the school administration is horrifying, even given the stressors that our public education system has endured the past few years. Why was the child allowed into the school without a parent as was required? Just one of the questions I would like answered- as well as why the mom decided SHE didn't have to follow the rules, either?! The mother, unfortunately for her, is finding out there are consequences for bad behavior. I hope the child can be rehabilitated, but all that anger seems to come from such a deep, dark place, that may not be the outcome of therapy for him. As always, I appreciate the insights and clarity Dr Grande offers in every case!❤
